Think You Know Your Nose? |
|
Did you know you have 4 nostrils? Two you can see, and two further back called choannae, which is greek for funnels. I did not know this. Did you know that we use each of our viewable nostrils to detect different smells? We breath different amounts of air into each one and create a kind of 'nasal stereo'. I knew we needed both eyes for proper depth perceotion but i had no idea our nostrils operated in such a fashion. Did you? Have anymore tidbits about noses?

LOL *compulsive nose picking is called rhinotillexomania *The mucous membranes in the nose and sinuses produce between a pint and a quart of mucus a day. Nearly all of it is flushed out of the sinuses and into the stomach, where it is dissolved by acids. (that does wonders for my gag reflex) *One-third of American adults pick their nose at least once an hour. http://sci.rutgers.edu/fo...

3. Rozie37 (6084) | 6 months ago | I kind of knew this. I know that further back in my nose the hole narrows into a smaller opening. I am not sure exactly where it leads to from there though and I did not know that the two holes in the back were also called nostrils.

4. drannhh (4281) | 6 months ago | Now if you hadn't told me which book you are currently reading, I would have known anyway. Careful though because when you get to the bit on George Washington, that is going to rile some people up. Some facts people just don't want to know. I have a nose for ferreting out facts.
