Were you a changed baby? |
| |
| I was talking recently with someone I know who is raising her beautiful daughter, and when she said that her daughter seems to be left-handed, I asked if she was going to change her. She had no idea what I meant. I explained, and she had never heard of changing the child’s preference and desire to choose to use the right hand over the left. You see, I thought everyone knew about working to change your child’s preferred hand to be the right hand. I thought that was just something every parent knew about and every parent did. I thought everyone knew that right-handers have it easier than left-handers (just look at the intended design and placement of a computer mouse), and that was why it was done. I know my parents changed me as a child. I thought that the only people who were left-handed had parents who attempted but failed to change them because it was obvious that the child was determined to use his or her left hand and was doing so far better than the right. My parents attempted for months to change my sister but to no avail. So, for all of the right-handed myLotters - were you a changed baby, or have you always preferred your right hand? Have you had this discussion with your parents? Did you watch your parents attempt to change a younger sibling? If you are left-handed, do you know whether your parents attempted to change you? If you could go back in time and become right-handed as a child, would you? | | | | | |

| | I am a preferred right hander. There's a lot of evidence to suggest that forcing a left handed child to become right handed does immense damage to their development and personality. I know that some cultures still hold to the view that the left hand is 'unclean' and the right hand is 'clean' but there is absolutely no physical or logical reason why this should be so, even though there are still lots of terms that suggest it - the Latin for left is 'sinister' and for right, 'dexter' from which we get the word 'dexterous'. Left or right handedness is part of the very basic programming of the brain and probably is decided in the first few weeks of pregnancy. To try to 'educate' a child to be right handed by forcing them to use their right hand - even tying their left hand behind their back - is to make them feel that they are less than perfect from a very early age. Many left handers who are forced in this way become handicapped by a lack of confidence and stammering is a quite common result of this early and misguided training. | | | | | | |

| | Wow, lots of things I have never heard before. Thank you for the educated response. So it seems that any action from encouraging to forcing a child to use his or her right hand just might be a thing of the past. | | | |

| | I was changed as a child by my mother and it angers me. As a result, I became a perfectionist. Unable to complete work because my drawings and hand writing had to be perfect. I do have the ability to draw well with my right hand, but had much criticism from parents and teachers for being unable to finish anything that involved penmanship. I can vividly remember crumpling paper and throwing it away, if a letter wasn't formed in a esthetically pleasing way. I think the anger stems from being forced, at a developmental stage, when I was finding my voice. Probably during the terrible twos. My question is this...Now that I am in my fifties, why have I suddenly started doing things with my left hand? Usually, I do not realize it, until I get a "What's wrong with this picture?' feeling. I am confused, until I figure out, what I am doing. | | | |

| | I hate to tell you but I am of the vintage that in school you were changed! I was left handed, but thru school changed to writing ONLY with my right hand, and do everything else with my left hand. Ambidextrous, I guess you could say! I do know that NOW they do not change you in Canadian schools, because they have discovered that one side or other of your brain is dominant, and by forcing the brain to change, development is stifled. The old expression is; Left Handed People are the only ones in their Right Mind! | | | | | | |

| | Why would a parent try to force their child to do something that doesn't come naturally? I am left handed and my parents made no attempt to change that. There is no reason to change that. Just like there is no reason to try to change anything else about a child such as their hair color or height. It is a part of who I am and I am glad my parents didn't try to force me to use my right hand. Why is using your right hand better? It's not. If my child is left handed I will encourage him to do the best he can with his left hand. As far as the statement that this world is made for right handed people, that may be true, but I have no trouble using a mouse, driving a car or using a can opener. I can do anything a right handed person can do. | | | | | | |

| | I think there are a lot of things a parent forces a child to do that don't come naturally - it's part of raising a child. You can't tell me that every child instinctively and naturally knows to use a toilet, a fork or a spoon, play the piano, or ride a bike. I think the old theory was that left-handed people were broken, and parents tried to fix them - no different than a speech impediment or crooked teeth. You say that you can do anything a right handed person can do. I believe you. In fact, I am willing to bet that you can do it BETTER. I am a firm believer that left-handed people are far more ambidextrous than right-handed people. | | | |

| | You are right, children are not born knowing how to do those things. But they are not forced into doing something that does not feel natural. For instance, you say parents teach children how to use a fork and spoon. That is true, but they should allow the child to hold the utensil in either hand, whichever feels better to them. Using the utensil is not forced, but being told to use it with the right hand, even if it is more comfortable to use the left, that is forced. | | | |

| | Wow, I didn't realize people still did that. I had a friend in high school that was raised in England and went to a Catholic school. She was forced to change from left-handed to right handed because it was "evil" to be left-handed. Her penmanship was horrible and she was kinda clumsy. We always wondered if it would have been different if she was allowed to be left-handed. I think it confused her brain a bit. When my kids were little, I let them choose what hand they wanted to use. I'd set their crayon down in front of them on the paper and they'd pick it up. My oldest is writes left-handed, but plays sports right handed. My youngest writes right-handed, but plays some sports left-handed. I remember when they were playing T-ball and the coach asked if they were left or right handed so he knew what side of the tee to put them on. We already knew that they both batted from the opposite side so we told them where to put them. They were really confused when my youngest plays the field right-handed, but bats left-handed. I think the reason most things are set for right-handed is because most people are right-handed. A lot of things are pretty easy to change - like the mouse, I've shown many friends how to set it to left-handed. | | | | | | |

| | Well, you're a decade younger than me, so I guess I meant I didn't know it was still done in "your" day... And from the looks of the discussion, you aren't alone. I really thought it was a mideival kinda thing, but apparently it's happened in the very near past. | | | |

| | I have have always been right handed. If I had had a left handed child I would never have forced them to use their right hand. Nature made them that way so what benefit would changing "what came naturally" be to them? | | | | | | |

| | I believe I am an inborn right handed. Both my husband and my siblings are right handed. Yeah, it is true that there are advantages for right handed as most of the equipments likes car gears and so on are designed for right hands. I did see parents who try to change the habit of their kid by using right hands. But normally it ended up with failure especially when the child had already cultivated the habit of using left hand. | | | | | | |
