I have read both the book & seen the movie & I honestly can't decide which I like better LOL. The movie stayed close to the original story from the book with some slight changes & some minor differences. Of course the movie has Clark Gable...LOL. So you see, I just can't decide LOL. Which did you perfer the book or the movie?

I like books better because they widen my imagination. I get carried away and sometimes would imagine myself as the character in the book that I'm reading. Movies are okay for me if I would just really love to entertain myself.
If books or movies? I would go for books.

I liked the book better, there were a lot of details that even a really long movie can't include. They did a good job of staying true to the story though, way better than many others. But when it comes down to it, it's too hard to replicate certain aspects of it, like the actresses didn't lace up nearly to the extent that would have been realistic for formal dresses at the time. Understandably though, because it takes quite some time and practice to get flexible that way in your body so you aren't in pain. I did enjoy the movie though, just not the same way I enjoyed the book. Reading allows you to take time and think about things that peak your interest before you go on, in a movie it flies past, even if you need a moment to put the pieces together in your head.

I read the book as an adolescent many, many times, all 1064 pages of it. Its still my absolute favorite book of all time.

I didn't see the movie until many years later and while I thought it was very good, I had read the book so many times that I think I had much of it already pictured in my mind and the movie didn't quite fit that picture.

Both are excellent, and would recommend to anyone.

Yes it really is a good book & it's definately worth your time no matter how many pages you have to read LOL. Like you I read it more then once. It's my favorite book as well.

Well, honestly I would have to say that the book "Gone with the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell was much better than the movie. When I first saw the movie I fell in love with it and then went right out and bought the paperback. I could not put it down once I started reading it. It is a lengthy novel, but I finished it in a couple of days. A few years ago I visited Margaret Mitchell's home in Atlanta, Georgia. It is a shame that she died at such an early age ... only 48 ... when she was struck by a car driven by an off duty cab driver just three blocks from her home. She died 5 days later. I really love watching the film over and over again. I never get tired of it. Vivien Leigh is my favorite actress. I loved the documentary that showcased how "Gone with the Wind" got made.

Wow I didn't know all that about Margaret Mitchell & you actually got to visit her home? I am suddenly very jealous LOL. Yes, I agree the film was awesome & the book was even better. It's true after the first couple of pages you just can't seem to put it down. It's like you get totally lost in it. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks so much for the BR. Yes her home in Atlanta is very small. The Margaret Mitchell Museum is right next door with a lot of memorobilia from the movie GWTW.

The movie. Vivian Leigh and Clark Gable ARE Rhett and Scarlett in my opinion and while I like the book, the movie is better than what my imagination is! It's just perfect!

myLot reputation of 74/100. robsbrooklyngirl (3079)   ranked 35 out of 39 in gone with the wind  2 years ago

I don't think that movie would have been as good if they had chosen anyone else to play those roles. Whenever I think of Gone with the Wind I immediately think of Vivian Leigh & Clark Gable as Rhett & Scarlett.

It's actually been a while since I read the book now, but the only difference that comes to mind at the moment is that she had another child that wasn't in the movie. I actually think they stuck really close to the book when making Gone with the Wind, because there were very few differences if I remember correctly.

I always think the book is better- in this case, if there hadn't been a book there wouldn't have been a movie so:)
