New School vs. Old School  |

|  You hear it said on the ball field, the basketball court and the gridiron all the time.
“That boy, he’s Old School.”
You never hear anyone referred to as New School.
I'm wondering if there's something wrong with New School. Maybe it's not all that great, but it did get me to thinking about New School vs. Old School when it comes to every day life.
Here's a start to the list. Can you come up with any New and Old School comparisions?

Old School: Manual Royal Typewriter
Really Old School: Number 2 pencil and college ruled notebook paper

Old School: Ice trays

Old School: Day timer
Really Old School: Tying string around your finger

Old School: Weight Watchers
Really Old School: Mix in a salad every now and then.
New School: Canola Oil
Old School: Crisco

New School: Kurt Cobain (though some aging Gen X’ers want to classify him now as Old School).

Old School: Dad’s hand-me-down Volvo for your first car
Really Old School: Mom’s Ford Fairline for your first car.
New School: Hip Hop
Old School: Disco funk
Really Old School: Motown
Really, really Old School: Chuck Berry
New School: P Diddy
Old School: George Benson
Really Old School: James Brown
New School: Tim McGraw
Old School: Waylon, Willie and the Boys
Really Old School: Johnny Cash
New School: Blue Tooth, Blackberry or the Razor cell phones that do everything except wipe your fanny, but they are thin enough to use in a pinch if you had to.
Old School: Mobile car phone with the horseshoe antenna on the trunk
Really Old School: Rotary dial phone with party line.
Really, really Old School: The Penny Postcard.
New School: High Def plasma flat screen TV
Old School: Big Screen TV with a dish
Really Old School: Zenith console TV and three channels, and if the President was on TV you were screwed.
Really, really Old School: Radio.

| |  Old school generally just means it's "retro".
Retro is and will always be cool.
No one hates "new school" it's just not retro...and it's weird to talk about new stuff as past if it's not.

But what is Retro to one may not be retro to another.
For instance you said Old school = Typewriter vs New School = computer.
whereas I would say
Old School = Apple w/black and green screen
New School = whatever computer you want to insert that is new.
or
Old School = Oregon Trail
New School = the Sims.
but there are some people who didn't play Oregon Trail in elementary school on the green and black screen apple computers to compare it to the sims of the day.

| | Yeah, I know it's all relative. What sparked the idea is that on this VH1 series History of Rock somebody referred to Run DMC as Old School.
I about came out of my chair.
If you were to listen to some vintage Bo Diddley songs you'd see he was actually the first rapper.
Yes, I know this dates me and ages me.

| |  Interesting discussion, ORyans! What I find frightening about this topic is the fact that I'm in all of those generations, lol. Off the top of my head I'll toss in-New School: Gel pens Old School: Roller ball pens Really Old School: Ballpoint pens Really , Really Old School: Fountain pens. This all causes me to wonder, "Do they still have dance crazes?" For as long as I can remember there have been dance crazes, but if they still exist, I have not heard of any lately.

| | As usual, you're humorous writing is excellent. I do want to suggest some really old school alternatives. Instead of Johnny Cash, I would say Bob Wills, Little Jimmy Dickens, Tex Ritter, or Hank Williams. I'd also say that for your telecommunications category, the really, really old school would be the telegraphy. Strangely enough, I must old school because my first car was Dad's 1974 Volvo, which he made me pay for by the way. He was old school in that he never bought me a car or paid for my college. Some more additions:

| |  For the most part I am old school.I prefer Ice trays.I still write down on paper little notes to remember things. I don't diet.I am of no school when it comes to music except country. I am definitely old school. I would rather listen to Willie than any new "country" artist.
