We have had this German Shepherd puppy now for 5 1/2 weeks. She is a really good dog even though she still puppy bites and takes my shoes. But now I wonder if we need to find another home for her.

When my 5 y/o has her chew rope he plays tug of war with the dog. Sometimes when he would get the rope from her, he would swing it out of her way, and in my mind and probably the dogs, he was teasing her. I tell him not to do that, but he won't stop.. Then last night I heard the dog growling. I watched wondering if this was a play growl, (our dalmatian growled all the time when playing tug of war), but as I watched, when my son had the rope in his hand, it looked like the dog went to bite him, but I couldn't tell if it was just going to puppy bite or bite out of trying to hurt my son.

Then tonight and at this moment, my son is in the corner because he has this wooden sword he plays with. He knows that if he is playing with this sword, the dog tries to get it and I told him to either play somewhere else or just tell the dog no. Well I am sitting here and I hear this sound that didn't sound good and when I looked, just over my left shoulder, my son was standing in front of the dog with this sword.. I asked him if he hit the dog and at first he said no, then he said yes..

So now I wonder if it would be best to get rid of the dog, or just punish my son and hope their relationship gets better.. I can't believe he feels he has to hit the dog like this, a dog should be a boys best friend, not something for a boy to hit..

Carmel,

What your dog is doing is probably somewhat normal, and I would work with your dog.

With tug of war, it becomes sometimes more than a game they have to win, and if your Germans Shepherd wants to be the 'alpha' male...

But also do you want to give him the chance to fit in and to go to obedience school,

I have no good advice but if your family is in danger o getting bitten, like my husband and I got bitten by a chow over a chicken the dog might have to go to a home with older children.

He may have also bonded with you and not take to a new home as easily.

Hope it works out.

Thanks Mooch, I am going to talk to my husband and see what he says. I already told him about the incident last night. I am hoping that when I tell him what happened tonight, he will have a serious talk with our son..
I really don't want to get rid of the dog, other than those problems, she is really good.. She has picked up on sit and stay very quickly and listens so well..

I also have a puppy, she only have 6 weeks and she loves to bite things. It is probably her teeth, they are growing and dogs normally have a bit of discomfort, the only way to relieve that, is to scratch their teeth in something.
I bought some plastic (Latex) toys for her. And when she is biting things i just give her a little slap in her "butt" saying no and then i give her the toy. They are young, and we are the ones that need to teach them the "good manners". Just like Sit, Lie down, Still, etc...
Your son is hurting her, and like all animal they have the need to defend themselves.

The dog acts with what we teach. If your son hits and probably hurts her, she will do the same just to defend, and probably when she will be an adult, she will be dangerous.

First teach your son to be patient and to give love to her.
I think, sorry, the problem is in your son and not the puppy.

If I tease my puppy she knows that is just to play, she never gives an hard bite. And I only tease her for a few and small moments, not every day.

Just be careful and watch your son, if he tries to do something more dangerous, he might cry later.
And, by the way, a sword could make the puppy blind... If you have a dog, you need also to "teach" your son responsibility in "how to treat a dog".

Children normally have the instinct and think that animals don't suffer, and they are just there for what we want, and it's not like that.

Thanks Ruibinha, I know the problem is with my son, but unfortunately if I had to get rid of one, it would have to be the dog..I have talked him about how we need to care for the animal and they depend on us. I also was just informed by another friend that tug of war is not something we should play with a dog..I didn't know that, because we played with our dalmatian and she never showed any signs of aggression. But according to my friend, it isn't a good game to play, so we will have to change that..:)

I would say that the boy should be punished for what he did cause the dog is innocent and it did everything that a normal dog would do.
