Why do we like stupid people so much? |
| |
| Ya'll ever watch TVLand on sat tv? They got re-runs of all our favorite stupid people - Gomer Pyle, Jethro, Elly Mae, Gilligan, Archie Bunker, and list goes on and on. So, why is stupid funnier than smart? (Major exception - Bob Newhart). Who are your favorite stupid people? OK, you can't call people stupid, but these are TV characters - unlike real life presidents and preachers - leave them out so we don't get censored. | | | | | |

| | Yeh, sometimes you've got to be smart to be stupid. Jim Nabors, the guy that played Gomer Pyle, had a tremendous voice, and was smart enough to play that role so people would know who he was when he got up to sing. The others may have had other careers as well, but raked in the cash either way. Now that is smart. | | | |

| | I like them so much, because they are very much like the people in the town and surrounding towns around here! And in real life, they are twice as funny! | | | | | | |

| | Now that I know you live in Texas, I know exactly what you mean. They all congregate at the OU-Texas game in the Cotton Bowl. We take an inventory of all the stupid people in Oklahoma, get them completely snockered for the trip, ship them to Dallas where they go and get in drunk wrestling matches with all the stupid people in your state. Yes, it's great fun - especially for the cops. I bet they wish it was every weekend! | | | |

| | I love your Post! What a Great Topic! I would have to say it started with movies like Airplane and Naked Gun. I remember the first time I saw them and laughed so hard I cried. Another one of my favorite characters is Joey Tribiani from Friends. That guy cracks me up every single time! Why do we love these characters so much? That is a good question. I think at the end of a long day we need something that is just simple and funny. Regardless of your personality type slap stick humor will get you everytime! In my opinion there is nothing better than laughter! | | | | | | |

| | I think that it is often because we are reminded of the stupid things that we do ourselves, but would hate for anyone else to see us doing them. If you can identify a little with what is happening on the screen then it seems much funnier. | | | | | | |

| | If only no one had been around when I did all the stupid things I've done. Then, I wouldn't be constantly reminded of them whenever I get on my soap box with all the answers to the world. | | | |

| | I used to love the Honeymooners...I also liked Sanford and son.I realize now it was more of an escape for me, for the characters just remind me now of a funny version of my step-father...whom I could have choked with no problem on a daily basis :) great discussion,lol... | | | | | | |

| | Thanks, jerritts1mom, I like you want to back the guys least likely to win a popularity contest for their subtle charm. And by all means, if Jack Gleason kept you from committing a capital crime, then it was a job well done. I would add, however, that choking someone on a "daily basis" may be a short lived affair. | | | |

| | I think it's because we like to think that we could never be so stupid ourself. Also because someone else {albeit fictional} and not you is caught being stupid. | | | | | | |

| | I stopped drinking beer myself, but if I ever have one again, it wouldn't be my old brand - Busch. It would probably be Boulevard Pale Ale. I haven't watched the Simpsons that much, but I remember that Homer was a beer-drinking couch potato. Thanks for the offer though. | | | |

| | I think we enjoy watching stupid characters on TV in part because they make us feel superior and in part because we can identify with them in a way. No offense to anyone, I'm certainly including myself in this, but let's face it even the most intelligent among us have our "Duh!" moments. I have so many favorite dumb characters. These people who play and create these lovable dummies and write their lines are laughing all the way to the bank because it's very difficult to write and play comedy. Also, there's a fine line between "funny stupid" and "so stupid it's not even funny". Annie | | | | | | |

| | I love those re-runs, hey, I grew up on those. Now taking a look back, is it stupid or maybe just simple minded people that are ignorant to other things? Gilligan, well there is an exception. You know it takes a brilliant actor to be funny because in comdey you are really baring more of yourself to the audicance. Anyway, sorry off topic. I think we enjoy these because their craziness and because of their ignorance. It reminds us that there are simplier things in this complicated world. They maybe simple minded, but they're honest, it's clean and really it's just fun. | | | | | | |
keymandan (737)
|

| | No on the contrary - the difficulty of baring your simple and naive self in such a way as to be both clean and funny is very much on topic, and what is it that requires brilliance on the part of the actor? | | | |

| | Because when you see the truely great funny people they use their bodies as well as their expressions for humor. That takes practice and a lot of body control to do that on screen. I can't imagin how many hours they spend in from of the mirror and/or stage coach to coordinate their lines with the animation they need to create these characters. Lucille Ball, Jim Carrey, Gilligan, Don Knotts...are a few of the great ones that come to mind. | | | |

| | Sorry, I don't watch TV, but when I did I avoided those shows like the plague. I prefer clever and witty to dumb and dumber. I do like just about anything Steve Martin or Leslie Nielson do though, but they are brilliant and talented... unlike the general population. | | | | | | |

| | Yeh I've seen some examples of the general population on American Idol, and they are neither nor talented, but are indeed funny. My taste for that is rather limited, however. I think you missed out by avoiding those shows like the plague, but the heavy hand of fate is not to be questioned. | | | |

| | Yeh I have on a very limited basis tuned in to American Idol - the general population indeed. I don't consider them either talented or brilliant, and if they are funny they don't mean to be. These shows were parent-approved, and I liked them because despite the apparent dorky, cornball mentality of the characters, they had the best approach to what I, as a child, could begin to grasp in the way of what would later be very adult subject matter. The Beverly Hillbillies shoot first and ask questions later skiffs, for example, would freak you out in real life. It certainly did me. And being stranded on an island would be far from funny if it actually happened. As far as Gomer goes, actual Marines don't exactly go out of their way to get you to see the humor of the situation. Nonetheless, I've got Gomer Pyle to balance against my brother-in-law and late cousin that served in 'Nam on two tours of duty. | | | |
