Why do we like stupid people so much?  

Yeh, sometimes you've got to be smart to be stupid. Jim Nabors, the guy that played Gomer Pyle, had a tremendous voice, and was smart enough to play that role so people would know who he was when he got up to sing. The others may have had other careers as well, but raked in the cash either way. Now that is smart.

Now that I know you live in Texas, I know exactly what you mean. They all congregate at the OU-Texas game in the Cotton Bowl. We take an inventory of all the stupid people in Oklahoma, get them completely snockered for the trip, ship them to Dallas where they go and get in drunk wrestling matches with all the stupid people in your state. Yes, it's great fun - especially for the cops. I bet they wish it was every weekend!

Yes, and somebody is sittin' there makin' money off of that ! !

Since Oklahoma doesn't have a coastline, and most of our oil wells are capped anyway, you might say its a way of profiting from our rich neighbor.

If only no one had been around when I did all the stupid things I've done. Then, I wouldn't be constantly reminded of them whenever I get on my soap box with all the answers to the world.

And by all means, if Jack Gleason kept you from committing a capital crime, then it was a job well done. I would add, however, that choking someone on a "daily basis" may be a short lived affair.

I stopped drinking beer myself, but if I ever have one again, it wouldn't be my old brand - Busch. It would probably be Boulevard Pale Ale. I haven't watched the Simpsons that much, but I remember that Homer was a beer-drinking couch potato. Thanks for the offer though.

No on the contrary - the difficulty of baring your simple and naive self in such a way as to be both clean and funny is very much on topic, and what is it that requires brilliance on the part of the actor?

Because when you see the truely great funny people they use their bodies as well as their expressions for humor. That takes practice and a lot of body control to do that on screen. I can't imagin how many hours they spend in from of the mirror and/or stage coach to coordinate their lines with the animation they need to create these characters. Lucille Ball, Jim Carrey, Gilligan, Don Knotts...are a few of the great ones that come to mind.

Ummmm, I have to confess though, I did watch 'Married with Children' and laughed my a$$ off the whole time. Hehehe, even thinking about that show makes me laugh.

Yeh I've seen some examples of the general population on American Idol, and they are neither nor talented, but are indeed funny. My taste for that is rather limited, however. I think you missed out by avoiding those shows like the plague, but the heavy hand of fate is not to be questioned.

Yeh I have on a very limited basis tuned in to American Idol - the general population indeed. I don't consider them either talented or brilliant, and if they are funny they don't mean to be.

These shows were parent-approved, and I liked them because despite the apparent dorky, cornball mentality of the characters, they had the best approach to what I, as a child, could begin to grasp in the way of what would later be very adult subject matter. The Beverly Hillbillies shoot first and ask questions later skiffs, for example, would freak you out in real life. It certainly did me. And being stranded on an island would be far from funny if it actually happened. As far as Gomer goes, actual Marines don't exactly go out of their way to get you to see the humor of the situation. Nonetheless, I've got Gomer Pyle to balance against my brother-in-law and late cousin that served in 'Nam on two tours of duty.
