The Managing of a Grape Vine  email this discussion to a friend?

campana (61) 6 years ago

My wife & I bought a small cottage,in the Limousin region of France in the department known as the Correze in the village of Treignac, this time last year.
The cottage has an old vine on the property & when we took possession of the cottage in August last year there were grapes on the vine but because the vine had not been pruned for some years the grapes were very very small in fact the size of small pearls.
A previous owner of the house, who lived next door, at a ripe old age of 92 years explained that the grapes that had been reaped from the vine in years gone by were excellent. However we never got to discuss the vine further with her before she died a few months later.
We know absolutely nothing about Grape Vines whatsoever and would appreciate any advice on the management of vines/pruning etc.
The old lady did express however, that the vine needed pruning and before last winter we pruned the vine right back as far as we dare.
Now the vine has come back to life and there are tubers everywhere and heavy leaf, but no sign of any grapes.
Can anyone assist with informat ion on what we should do.
Thank you

If it has been years since the pruning of the vine, it may take a year or so before the vine reaps any grapes for you. It must reestablish its running vines before it can produce. A similar situation occured in our family. After 2 years of care, watering, feeding, etc., the vines prodiced heavily. With the growth you describe, I can only assume it is trying to come back. Keep taking care of it and I am sure you will end up with a nice crop next season.

Thank you for responding. I understand quite clearly what you say. The problem now with the heavy leaf & vines is that they are very prolific & I wonder whether the growth is too excessive for the area the vines are running over. Can they in any way be stopped from running too far as the goodness is being channeled into growth from the main vine & in turn if stopped in any way would then channel the goodness, possibly next year as you say, into a heavy harvest?

Surely there is someone out there who can give me some answers. The only respondent gave me some views which I sincerely appreciate, but I need more help. Books are one thing, but hands on experience is a different ball game.
Your help & assistance would be appreciated.
