FORT WORTH, Texas -- Mom Says Refurbished PlayStation Card Contained Porn

A Fort Worth mother said the refurbished Sony PlayStation Portable memory card she bought from a local Gamestop store was packed with pornography.

Sandra Hemm said she bought the refurbished card for her son at the McCart and Alta Mesa store and was told it would be like new.

Instead, she said, the card, which stores game data, contained several pornographic videos and photos.

She said she made the discovery when her son, John, and a friend turned on the game system.

"Oh my goodness. I just, my stomach turned, you know. I just was sick. I just couldn't believe they had witnessed that," Hemm said.

A GameStop spokesman said he has never heard of an incident like this happening and said the company has a process to erase data from refurbished cards.

The GameStop corporate office is investigating.

----------------------------------------------

You have to love filler news… especially when it contains to two things gaming and porn. (though gaming combined with porn has always been pretty lame, ala BMXXX).

So Sandra Hemm bought a used media card for her son's PSP. Should GameStop ensured the card was formatted and not contain any sort of data? Sure, that seems like a reasonable thing to do if you are selling used media.. Is it something that is a moral obligation of the highest order? I don't think so. It is more of a convenience.

I do not own a PSP (but if any of you want to send me one, I would take it… porn laden or not), but I am willing to bet there is a function in it to format a memory card or delete all files off of said card. I'll bet that might take all of a minute to do and that is counting the time it takes to dive through menus.

If you are buying used media it is probably a good idea to make sure it is not chock full or porn, personal files, saved games or some old lady's recipes. Likewise if you are selling media it is probably a good idea to format at worst and if you are uber paranoid run it through an eraser or scrubber. For something like a PSP memory card this probably would take all of a minute to do.

The religiously self righteous have brought this subject up before in gaming circles. There is porn on PSP's…oh my god the world is ending! Erm, given it has removable media, a grey market for mods and can access the internet via an internal browser… does this surprise anyone? Should her kid had to have seen this? No.

Both Ms. Memm and GameStop failed in protecting her son and his friend from stumbling upon this discarded porn. GameStop aught to ensure its used media is blank and safe (e.g. free of viruses, porn or personal data). Likewise Ms Hemm aught to have taken a minute to make sure that this was safe for her son.

Have you ever purchased something used and found something you weren't expecting to find with it?

Sounds like that peanut butter and chocolate commercial. Hey, if your gonna try and save a few bucks I guess you have to take your chances. I bet that lady checks out everything before she gives it to her kids in the future. What do you think?

I doubt the kids are scarred for life though. They will have some awesome stories to tell at school. Shoot, they are now the school cool dudes. They have seen stuff the other guys still have to dream about.

lol you are probably right. This woman is having this fit about her boy and his poor friends being "exposed" to this and the kids were probably bummed his mom erased it all.

LOL! Oh, yeah - those game cards are a hot ticket. I've never heard of that being loaded on a game card though. Guess you should always check out used things to see if they work and if there is anything on them. I couldn't imagin the surprise she got - good think it was found before they viewed the whole thing.

The problem I have here is that when you sell something as refurbished you are saying that it has been restored back to factory conditions. Selling something used is just that it has been used and no "refurbishing" has taken place.

I agree Cyn that the GameStop along with the parents are responsible here. But I lay the majority of the blame on the corporation. Someone along the way dropped the ball and did not do their job.

Grats Angel!

I disagree to some extents, but in a case like this, the data could easily be reformatted or deleted.

I do not place too much blame in this situation. While Gamestop could have deleted the data, typically this is not done for efficiency sake. It could have also been checked, but Gamestop, EB and other electronics stores usually do not check memory cards and games (due to all of the hassle, and the items can add up at times).

For this situtation, also note that PSPs can use SD cards for memory (same as digital cameras and other media). If the "material" is homemade, that could be one explanation. Also the cards can be used to save data normally when formatted (another cause of the situation). Due to game systems being more universal and using readily accessible technology(SD, internet), things like what Ms Hemm went through are sure to increase.

Hemm should have checked the SD card too, but this isn't too easy for some households (plenty of older computers do not have a SD/Digital Media card slot to read the item). However, Hemm could have tried viewing the data card from the PSP (but that could also prove difficult for some parents).
