Singing Toy Chest! Somebody please kill it! |
| |
| My son has a large clear plastic tote on wheels that we use for his toys. Well, when me moved, I discovered the joys (note the sarcasm) of toys without *off* buttons. This toy chest rode in the back of our car, singing at least 3 different songs at once, telling me that I am its friend, and telling me how much it loves me. About 3 seconds after we moved in, I went through the toy chest and got rid of any toys that didn't have an *off* option (I passed them on to another mother - I think that was a bit mean of me). Well, even after all of that, he still got toys with no *off* button for Christmas, so the toy chest still sings at us! I wish that toy manufacturers would realize that it is the parents with the purse strings, and that I am much less likely to ever purchase these types of toys again. They are really hurting their sales. Does this bug anyone else? Any stories to share? | | | | | |

| | We stopped buying anything that sings, blinks,or makes noise. That doesn't stop the family though. I did purchase a keyboard for Christmas it LOOKED like it had an off switch. Every single time you bump the thing it comes on. When my daughter was 2 my mother shipped us 2 Furbies. Oh my daughter loved these little things and they did have off switches...Well one day we all went off to work and daycare and accidentally left both Furbies on..When we got home they had moved from where we left them and both toys had smoke rising from their heads.. My husband opened them to find that they'd chattered to each other all day long until they completely blew up! Thats when we stopped buying toys that "do" things..LOL | | | | | | |

| | Oh, god, I had the furbies as a child - I hated them! My sister and I each got one for Christmas one year, but she was the one who had asked for them (they looked like Gremlins to me), but our grandmother or someone got us each one. Well, I couldn't stand their horrible chattering, it sounded so creepy, so I ended up giving mine to my sister, and she got so fed up with them that she ended up removing the batteries. | | | |

| | Yeah, after they corroded. Ever had a furby with corroded batteries? The thing won't shut off, even after you pull 'em! | | | |

| | OMG!!! Those darn toys without off buttons. What is up with that. I hate those toys too. I have this stupid Barney driving wheel toy with a shifter and everything. Its cute but please note I hate Barney and his voice. So when I hear this toy go off constantly I want to take a hammer to it.LOL. Unfortanately my son loves this toy. But I think its coming to an end for Barney. | | | | | | |

| | LOL - it's always the toys they love that are the most annoying. The biggest culprit of the singing toy chest is this stuffed dog that sings or talks if you press its nose, tummy, ears, or paws. He of course loves it. Well, pressing one of the paws will turn it off, but pressing ANY of the body parts will turn it back on! What is even the point of a teaser off switch? | | | |

| | The only toys I've seen continuing to sing are the baby toys. I just take off the cell when I don't want them to sing. Some of them just need a light jolt to start singing. | | | | | | |

| | And he is a baby, so of course all of his toys do that. Thankfully, many of the toys have an *off* switch on the battery pack that he can't get to, so I am at least able to stop it for being put away, and I have gotten rid of most of the ones that didn't have that option at all. It was either that or throw the toy chest out on the side of the highway! | | | |

| | I have a 15 month old and fortunately he has only 2 of those (yes, gifts! I would never get him something like that that would drive me crazy!). He's outgrowing one...so I can put that away...and I'm sure I can hide the other one and he won't miss it. | | | |

| | Oh yeah, we have Fisher Price dollhouse toys that go off by themselves, LOL. We joke about it saying we have Casper living with us. Thankfully we are past all the toys that have the on/off button. Many times I have taken the batteries out of toys if they got real annoying. | | | | | | |

| | ROFL! I laugh heartily at you! However, I totally agree that toy manufacturers should realize that it is the parents holding the purse strings. It's kind of funny to load up all those toys with no off switches and send them to you, though... Although, it wasn't me that bought the off-switch-less toys for P. It was our father and irritating aunt, and the cousin that only comes to Thanksgiving and Christmas and makes us uncomfortable. By the way, I have some toys and clothes that P has outgrown that need to come to your house... | | | | | | |

| | It's always the people who don't see the kids often enough to care that send those toys. Of course, it was grandmother who bought him the guitar (which I often hear over the baby monitor in the middle of the night) and it was you/me who got him that annoying singing dog, which he loves - to chew on. From now on, if it still has the packaging and no off switch, it goes back to the store. If it doesn't have packaging, it goes to a different mother. | | | |

| | I too have to agree about the off switches on toys. One day I was sitting here at the house going through some boxes getting rid of stuff that the kids out grew or that was damaged. While going through one of the boxes in another room I heard a strange noise so I muted the tv and listened. It was my 3 yr olds Cheer Leader doll. Now this is funny but it scared me. I seriously thought the doll was going to come out of the other room and kill me (it reminded me of that movie Chucky). Yes Laugh because now it is funny. I don't know why I thought that but when the boyfriend got home from work I told him what had happened and he just busted up laughing. I made him go find the doll and remove the battery pack so that I knew it wasn't going to do anything. | | | | | | |

| | Creepy! That would be the end of that toy; not only would it no longer have batteries, I would send it off to terrorize someone else (preferably someone I never see and would never have my children around). I don't play around with creepy things coming to life. | | | |

| | I never even had a problem with this issue until my oldest daughter was 18 months old (10 years ago) There was a freaky incident late at night involving a sleep and snore ernie doll Scared the schnap out of me To this day I wont buy a toy if it doesnt have an on/off switch and easy access to the battery compartment I try to avoid all electronic toys if I can but the kids seem to ask for those more than any other kind of toy | | | | | | |

| | The "noisy toysies" are always favorites. I hear these horrible toys coming through the baby monitor at night, but they keep him entertained enough to not cry (otherwise they wouldn't be sleeping with him - maybe sleeping with the fishes - lol). | | | |

| | They have to have batteries... I'd put the batteries up, to be put in as a treat when chores are done, etc. A tidy room is worth an hour of noise! | | | | | | |

| | Love the idea. If my son weren't 5-mon.-old, I would so do that. As it is, I am putting it in my arsenal to save for later. | | | |

| | It served me well for many years, through 3 kids and 6 grandkids... Don't make the 'taking away' part a big deal, but DO go all-out about the whole hour that they CAN have them... it becomes a real treat! | | | |

| | As far as I'm aware all of my sons toys have an off button YAHOO. I hear you though, they can become annoying and hard on the ears. Sometimes I think it may even cause damage for the little ones. | | | | | | |

| | I have noticed that more toys have a quieter option now than they used to; even if they won't turn off, they will t least turn DOWN (major improvement). Of course, with some of them I haven't noticed a difference between loud and soft, and with others it seems like the soft is what toys used to be, and the loud will rupture and eardrum. | | | |
