Do You Fear Flying? |
| |
| Back in the '70s I was flying all over the place. I owned my own business and could well afford to pick up and go on a whim. I loved flying so much that even though I had my own business, I accepted a part-time job as a steward on a company jet. The company squired about celebrities such as Jacqueline Onassis, Barbara Eden, Cardinal Cooke of N.Y., and more. Most of the destinations were in the Caribbean. I always enjoyed the flights. We would return the guests to the city of their choice: Miami, Chicago, Pittsburgh, etc. One day I was asked if I was available to pitch in and I hated to admit that I couldn't accept that particular flight. Sadly, the plane crashed in the Gulf of Mexico, killing the pilot and co-pilot as they were returning from the Caribbean enroute to Chicago to pick up guests. Their remains were never found. I never flew again, and that's been more than 30 years ago. Now, with terrorism so rampant, I KNOW I'll never fly again ... at least until I die and become an angel and earn THOSE wings. | | I enjoyed flying, well after that first initial flight. my first one I was scared to death, after that I had no problems in traveling by plane. However since 911, I haven't flown since. More so due to all the security issues they have now, and the searches. I rather just load up my car and go. | | | | | | |

| | Wow! That's some story, rjscott! I don't blame you for not flying. I wouldn't fly either. No way. I used to fly all the time and I haven't flown in about 15 years. I hated to fly when I flew and I tried to overcome my fear of flying by learning to fly myself and ever since then I've never again flown. | | | | | | |

| | And every word of it is true. Jim Cheek, the pilot, was a customer of mine at the time. He was a nice man, very pleasant. Had a wife (Veronica) and two young sons -- I don't recall their names. The plane crash was carried in my local newspaper (Allentown, PA Morning Call). I'll never forget when I read it ... had I accepted that request to help, I'd now be somewhere unfound, in the Gulf of Mexico. Instead, I now LIVE roughly 5 miles from the Gulf, in Southwest Florida. | | | |

| | It is sad that plane crashed, Terrorism has also become a very real fear for many people. I would point this out, terrorists are just as likely to strike on buses and trains,in shopping malls etc. I love flying, and I hope that nothing deters me from doing so. If people stop flying because of the fear of terrorists, the terrorists have won. They have managed to instill that fear, which is their agenda anyway. We live in a society where we cannot allow these people to dictate how we go about our daily lives. If we do so,the very fabric of the democracies we live in,will be torn apart, another aim of terrorists. Its our way of life that they dont like. I understand your fear, but the terrorists wont stop me flying. | | | | | | |

| | now that the planes are all computerized I sure do fear flying - knowing that a strategically placed laser beam originating from the ground can shut down the computers and cause the plane to lose all power and maneuverability - causes me great concerns in taking flight... couple that with the sad reality that many people do not take pride or accountability in their workmanship - from designers to mechanics - makes an even greater concern. | | | | | | |

| | I enjoy flying very much. I have flown from St. Louis to Texas. From Texas to Colorado. From Colorado to Florida and the big flight was when I got stationed in Turkey and flew over there and back after my tour there. In between those times I flew home for vacation. To me flying is a great way to get from one place to another in a reasonable amount of time. I love to fly and today I would not hesitate to get on a plane. | | | | | | |

| | I have never flown and never will. My husband is pushing real hard trying to get me to fly. He loves it, but it's just something I can not do. I have a horrible fear of heights. Everyone tells me I will not even know I am flying. It's like being in a taxi cab...well, my mind will know. Like you said, now add the terrorism factor, I think I will keep my feet right here on the ground. | | | | | | |

| | I guess the terrorism has somehow made a negative impact on flyers, it could really be traumatic. But there are still lots of people who relies on flying, like for business/work and travel. I don't think that such acts like terrorism shouldn't affect one's view of flying, airport security has tightened up since that terror attack. I would still fly, I'll just leave the rest to whoever are responsible for making our flight comfortable and worth our life.. | | | | | | |

| | Wow, that's quite a story. I probably wouldn't fly after that either! I still fly, but it's very rare. When I do, I'm a little bit nervous but keep reminding myself that chances of disaster are probably less than that of riding in a car which I do every day. I have my first overseas flight coming up soon and I'm a little nervous about that. It will be the first time I'm actually over an ocean and also my first flight that's longer (much longer) than about 4 hours. | | | | | | |

| | Oh, I hope my schedule lets me see the sunset! Last year I was flying across the U.S. at sunset time and it was beautiful and very long lasting! We had clouds below us so it was a very different type of look. | | | |
