A big man driving a very little car...  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 92/100. ORyansBelt2012 (2111) 4 years ago

I am a big man.
I stand 6’2” and some change. I weigh a touch more than 275 pounds.
There are some cars out there I can’t drive.
One of them is my Dad’s Mazda Miata, but oh boy do I want to try. My Dad has a Mazda Miata M Edition ragtop and I’ve been granted the special honor to be allowed to drive it around for a few days.
“Are you sure you can drive this thing?”
Am I sure?
I’m fifty and a marginally competent man. While most days it’s hit or miss whether I leave the house with or without the fly option implemented, or if I put on matching socks, or even socks at all, I can drive a car.
What’s so hard about driving a Miata?
Absolutely nothing.
I know where the key goes.
I know how to keep it pointed relatively straight.
I drive a stick so I can roughly coordinate both feet and my right hand through the gear shifting while at the same time talking on my cell phone and drinking coffee.
Driving it is not the hard part. Getting in and out of my Dad’s Miata... now, that’s the hard part.
When I get into this Miata, I have to fold myself like a road map behind the wheel. You know how it is with road maps, you never can get those things folded right again. The same holds true trying to squeeze inside Dad’s Miata.
Legs are wedged tight.
The steering wheel digs into my gut.
My head pokes about six inches above the windshield.
I feel like one giant sardine and the only thing missing is the mustard sauce.
I don’t need seatbelts.
Wherever this car goes I’ll be going with it.
I’m good and stuck.
I keep a tub of Crisco, a big spatula in the car and a shoehorn with me, just in case.
I call getting out of a Mazda Miata “The Shoehorn Extraction Method.”
The first time I tried to get out of Dad’s Miata I noticed that my shoes were untied.
So I reached up and untied them.
I hadn’t seen my feet in quite some time. So as I squatted there half in and half out of my Dad’s Miata, I got reacquainted with them. I also introduced them to my ears because that’s where my feet were, right up there next to my ears. My knees were contorted in a yoga-like position that I hadn’t been able to attain since I was in seventh grade.
Successfully removing oneself from my Dad’s Mazda Miata involves the maneuver, “drop, tuck and roll.”
I realized a guy my size doesn’t drive a Mazda Miata, I wear it like a cheap sweater.
This 1998 ragtop with saddle leather tan interior and what I like to call “varoom” maroon exterior shoots down the highway like a flat stone skipping across a shallow pond.
When you hit the pedal, she goes.
My head protrudes about six inches above the windshield, which makes a great target for flying objects like beetles, hornets, bumble bees, and cigarette butts thrown from the car up ahead.
I am too tall to drive this car.
Still, this thing is sweet to drive. She purrs like a kitten on Ritalin. The first time I wedged behind the wheel I wore my official Tom Cruise Maverick Top Gun reflecto shades, Kenny Loggins and Danger Zone cranked on the radio, and I felt the need for speed. I revved her up to about 65 mph give or take and a June bug smacked me in the forehead.
Now that left a serious mark.
When you sit behind the wheel of a Mazda Miata ragtop with leather seats and varoom maroon interior, people look at you. You also spend as much time looking at yourself looking cool driving your Miata ragtop as watching the road.
Such coolness should not go unnoticed.
It’s tough being a big man driving a little car.
Ever try squeezing ten pounds of potatoes into a five-pound bag?
I have now.
I am that ten-pounds of potatoes and the Miata is the five-pound bag.
Growing up, my dream car was the 1968 Shelby Mustang; the kind Steve McQueen drove in the movie Bullitt.
Not anymore.
I am a Mazda Miata M Edition “varoom” maroon ragtop fan now.
I have become quite attached to this car over the past few days.
In more ways than I care to enumerate here.
Anybody got a shoehorn?

I love the Mazda Miata. If I remember right it only has the two seats in it. I had a boyfriend in the 90's that had a Miata. We would ride around with the top down and have a blast... His was white with red interior. **Thanks for the chuckle** you are so funny sometimes! You have a way of delivery that just makes me smile.

Just sometimes???
Well I never...

So tell me, what part of Atlanta are you in again?
I was in Dawsonville, lived in apartments just across Hwy 400 from the Outlet Mall.
I moved to Charleston back in January.
I guess you probably knew that.

I'm about to run this serialized story in the paper here that basically deals with all these kinds of stories. Call it part Lewis Grizzard meets Garrison Keillor.
In fact, they called me a poor man's Lewis Grizzard when I wrote in Atlanta.

Awww Sweety I thought you were still in Dawsonville. I didn't know you moved to Charleston. I lived in Winder, but moved to Bethlehem, just a couple of miles away from where I lived before. I love it here, the only thing I hate is crossing 316. I am so scared of that intersection! Before i lived right next to it, but rarely took it. Now to get to town I have to cross it... and I hate it.

I really do love your writing. You have a laid back kind of country style about you that I adore reading.

Take care,

Cookie

I'd have to go out to Oconee Co and North Oconee High Schools last year to cover baseball. I'd get down to that little convenience store there at 316 and then feel like the squirrel holding his nuts in trying to cross.

Ohmygoodness, I'm rolling over here. That is one of the funniest stories I've read in a long time.

The only thing that could possibly be funnier would be to watch my husband try to contort himself into such a vehicle - he's 6'5"

If you're 50, you're Dad is an awfully 'hip' (do people still use that word?) senior citizen. High fives to both of you!

I can picture some of this, some I can only try to imagine. When i was dating my first husband, for awhile he drove a Karmann Ghia. He could sit in the back seat and drive. He was 6'2". He was a long skinny string bean, though. I have always wanted a little car, my dad always said they were not safe. I now drive a white Mercury Capri convertible, 1991. I enjoyed the laughter.

HAHAHAHA !!
You are surely "Mr Cool".
Why not get a full face helmet (jet black, of course) then the June bugs and Beatles won't have "head on" collisions with your head? Just a thought. HAHAHAHA

You sound like my son, but he is much younger, he is around 6' 3" and 235 or so. I bought him a Toyota for his first car, I then bought him one of those pads to heat him and give him a back rub...but adding that in, meant he could not get in the car.

He now prefers his motorcycle.

There are some places that big men or big women, just to be fair, don't fit. Small cars is one. I had a music teacher in grade school that was very large....probably took music while she was playing basketball.....she used to drive a little two seater triumph convertible. I say two seater loosely, because for her it was just a one seater. Never knew how she drove that car with the top up, because I'm sure she could never have fit. She mostly reminded me of Goofy driving a car in the cartoons.

I of course have to assume that where there is a will there is a way. Good luck to you, and if you see anyone throwing salt at you it is a pretty fair indication that you have morphed into a pretzel.

It's funny I see this post on here. Just the other day me and a friend were talking about seeing big people in small cars and little people in big vehicles. We thought of it because we saw a very tall man driving a little tiny car. I've seen women who were shorter than 5 feet tall driving big cadillac's. Funny. My uncle knows a guy that was around 6'7 and he had a tiny car. He ripped the front seat out and sat in the back seat to drive! One day he was driving down the road and some younger guys were acting like jerks and they pulled over trying to start a confrontation. That was until they saw the guy climb out of the back seat! They left pretty quick.

Well, there are somethings which your heart really wants to try eventhough you know that its difficult. But this is human nature the thing you know are hard you want to try them. Though I don't know much about the car but I certaily do realize that how does it made you feel.

Thanks for reading my response.

Goodbye

I have long maintained that desire to perform does not necessarily ensure presence of talent. Just look at American Idol. Just like desire to drive does not necessarily mean you're going to fit behind the wheel.
I feel like Fred Flinstone in the Flinstone-mobile.
I can't let my arm dangle out the window as my knuckles will drag on the ground.
I have noticed since I drove this... have you ever noticed how the front grills of these big a$$ed pick ups have these snarling angry expressions on them? And those nasty faces are snarling down at you in your rearview mirror.

I guess these cars are helping small men feel big. Some little guy got into my truck and moved the seat forward and I couldn't get in. The lever to move the seat back is under the seat on the right side and for some reason I couldn't get the seat to move back. My wife went out and moved it for me. Now that is humiliation.
If men are suppose to be getting bigger I don't understand why our cars are getting smaller. With all the heavy people in America I am surprised there aren't more hummers being driven around.
