Happy 1 Year to my Sugar Boo!   email this discussion to a friend?

Let me tell you about this tiny bundle of joy in our lives. This tiny dog came to us on March 1, 2007. I was told by the owner to marry it to my 5lb male chihuahua, keep it for a week, and then give it back to her. Some of you familiar with breeding know that this is usually a non-complicated process...
Well, this little chihuahua weighs 2.5lbs when she's healthy. When she came to us she was barely on the scale. We were told she was 2yrs old and a good breeder. Her fur was nasty and underneath all the yuck we discovered a white dog! Her ears were just scabs. The fleas had eaten her up. Her ears were split on the ends and had no fur. She looked so sad and pitiful.
On night one of our little adventure, I couldn't bring myself to shove her into the tiny dirty crate she'd come in. I fixed a place in an open closet with a baby safety gate across. She cried and cried. It was one of those " just for tonight " things when I lifted her up and into my bed for the night ( I'd bathed her 2 seconds after she entered my home).
She seemed to be doing alright with a little TLC but on day 4, she fell over. I thought she was dead. I picked her up and she'd been sick both ends. I took her outside and it was obvious she has some sort of female infection. I called her owner and went to her house to pick up a blank check. Then I drove to vet 1. He was in surgery. It was hot and I really felt this little doggy as slipping away. I drove to vet 2, he was out for an extended lunch. I went to vet 3. He was in surgery. Vet 4 was closed. I never found vet 5 by the directions I was given by vet 3. Finally I drove back to vet 1.
They took the tiny dog to the back and I made sure to let them know that this was no my dog. I had only had her for 4 days. The vet told me that the dog had to be at least 10 years old going by her lack of teeth and that breeding her would kill her.
Guess what? I became the proud owner of a tiny deathly ill chihuahua along with a full baggy of half pills, drops, and a strict schedule of Gatorade and Pepto. Round the clock care was needed and the owner wanted nothing to do with it. Now, it wasn't the owner that had done this to her. She had only had her 1 day before she sent her to me and the new owner was sick that day and never really took a good look at what she'd purchased..So the vet really didn't give this little dog a chance and sent us on our way.
Oh how I babied my Sugar! She improved but acted very old and weak.
We moved in October and I sent my larger chihuahua to the owner that had given me this one. He's much louder and wouldn't do well in an apartment. So we moved with Sugar and all was well until Thanksgiving.
The night of Thanksgiving we'd all just gotten back from my mother n law's house. Sugar was on a chair dancing around for a piece of turkey. She danced right off the arm of the chair and hit her head on the wall. We spent the late night hours in animal emergency. Sugar stayed the night with her brain injury and was released to my high attentive care the next morning. My mother n law let us use her card to save Sugar's life so I now owe her. Sugar was put on steroids to lesson the swelling in her brain. She walked in circles for days after that.
Finally, she got up one day and ran through the apartment, one end to the other. She'd never run in my sight let alone at the speed she was traveling. From then on, every day she sleeps curled up on the FLOOR at my feet. When evening comes she runs around like her tail is on fire. If we tell her its time for bed she bolts in the opposite direction. I think a good dose of steroids is just what this little doggy needed.
Sugar Boo has brought so much joy to this family. Today we're calling it her birthday. Its technically an anniversary of her living with this crazy family. Judging by how she was in her previous place, we consider that her life began when she came to us. So today is Sugar's first birthday!!!
Is she 3 or is she 12? - She's not tellin!
