Diabetes & Eating |
|
I am a diabetic, and when I found out it changed my whole way of eating. I about starved to death the first couple of weeks. I am better now and adjusting to it very well, I have lost 40 lbs since last of September 2007.That had helped me alot, My A1C has really gone down. I have more bloodwork this month to see how it is doing. If you are diabetic or know a diabetic do you eat what you want or do you have a certain diet you follow. Also do you take pills or insulin or manage it with diet & exercise?

1. patgalca (5363) | 9 months ago | I am not diabetic but my father was as was the rest of his family (siblings, father, uncles). I have just been diagnosed with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and have gotten so much contradictory information that I am totally confused. I was told how to eat and what to eat, then someone else told me if I eat that way I will gain weight (eat protein with fruit and/or carbs to absorb some of the sugar so it won't spike). I am totally at a loss as to what to do because I DON'T want to gain weight. I lost 38 pounds; I certainly don't want to gain it back because I now have to eat 6 small meals a day including starchy foods. I am hungry all the time. I am having a hard time adjusting and finding a happy medium.

kcook57 (856) | 9 months ago | My how confusing this must be for you. I can see where you are coming from. I don't know what to tell you to eat for low BS, I have high BS, so we surely wouldn't correlate would we? I can see if I can get some help for you though through my diabetes educator, she is very smart. Would you like for me to see if I can help you?

patgalca (5363) | 9 months ago | From what I was told by the pharmacist today, the pancreas is creating too much insulin which eats up blood sugar. BUT, she said eventually it will wear itself out and stop producing too much insulin. Whether it will stop altogether remains to be seen. Since there is a history of diabetes in my family it is possible. If I could find the exact eating regimen that I should follow without gaining weight, I'll be happy. I am sure that exercise will be a necessity here and I am trying to get back to that. But I have fibromyalgia as well so pain and fatigue are always an issue with me. I was out delivering catalogues today, trudging through snow and when I came home I was so totally exhausted and in pain as well. It wasn't any more than I usually do but I think the snow played a factor, and perhaps my new diagnosis. Whatever you can find out would be great. Someone told me to get Suzanne Sommers book, but this person went against what the dietitian suggested so that's why I'm confused.

kcook57 (856) | 9 months ago | Okay I will see what I can get for you from her, I am sure she can help you, also you can go to this website and they will help you, it has alot of information on there and can be trusted. www.home-remedies-for-you... I think you will find all you need there, in the meantime I will see my educator on Thursday for cooking class and I will ask her if she has any other information aside from this for you. Blessings to you Kathy

patgalca (5363) | 9 months ago | Thank you very much. The website was very helpful. The suggested menu is pretty much exactly what I have been doing. Though still having difficulty cutting out my sweets, especially at night. Switching over to whole wheat pasta may be difficult for the family to accept but we'll just have to see. Money is an issue and I am going through apples like crazy. My last purchase (Friday) is almost depleted and won't make it until next grocery day (Friday). I just haven't read anywhere what the dietitian said about eating protein WITH fruit to absorb some of the natural sugars. I really appreciate your help. Thank you so much.

2. daeckardt (569) | 9 months ago | I found out in November 2005 that I was diabetic. I don't take pills now, but I did in the beginning. My sugar was never really high, but my doctor put me on them anyway. Now I am in China and I eat differently than I did in America. I have been under control for the most part. I pretty much eat what I want, but if I eat too much starch, then I worry about it.

3. robsbrooklyngirl (3114) | 9 months ago | My Mom is a diabetic & no she normally does not stick to her diet. She also has heart problems & she is over weight as well. I warn her of the many risks, but you know what they say "in one ear & out the other". She takes insulin shots & has for years now. Recently she was hospitalized yet again for heart problems, so for now she is sticking to her diet. I hope & pray that she does what she's supposed to from now on.

patgalca (5363) | 9 months ago | Diabetes is connected to the heart because it has to do with the blood which runs through the heart. My father had a mild heart attack when he was 65. He got diagnosed with Diabetes in his late 70's. He died of a stroke two years ago at 82. They are all diseases related to the heart.:(

kcook57 (856) | 9 months ago | OH MY Diabetes really works on the heart, she really needs to follow her diet better. I know though because I have a Dad who does the same thing, eats what he wishes and pops his pills. What they don't realize is the pills cannot work effectively without a proper diet.

| crosshair (72) | 9 months ago | the situation is in red alert. u really need to take care of her properly. ask to have proper diet balanced with proper sleep. The famous quotation by Adelle Davis "have a breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen and dinner like a pauper" is very much apt. and moreover the diet is important. Should contain less or zero quantity of sugar in food items. U can use sugar equivalents like jaggery and honey that come naturally unlike synthetic ones which could be harmful. maintain a minimum of 2 hrs gap after the dinner and sleep and exercise every morning.

4. book1962 (10064) | 9 months ago | I was diagnosed diabetic in Feb 2006 and I dont have to inject insuline. A pill just before breakfast will do nicely. My blood sugar is in good standing, my doctor just had my HBA1C measured last week and it said 5,6 thats a good one. He has also told me I dont have to measure every morning but its allright to measure once a week and write it down. I dont feel comfortable with this and so I still measure daily to know where I stand for the day. After I was diagnosed diabetic and watched carbs I lost a few pounds, I am overweight, too, but somehow though the sugar level is allright, the pounds have come back to me. Dont know what to do about it, and I dont really worry as the BS level is good.

kcook57 (856) | 9 months ago | I go back to the doctor Mar. 28 and if my HBA1C is lower than last time I get to come off my pills, PRAISE GOD! I only take one metformin at bedtime with a 15gm snack, and it seems to work just fine. When I began my HBA1C was 8.9, in September, in Dec. I had to redo bloodwork, it was 6.2 still higher than they want it to be so I am hoping that this time it will be leveled out. I have lost 40-45 lbs since September because of the low carb diet and I am hoping I don't put too much of it back on. Good Luck to you with your diabetes.

kcook57 (856) | 9 months ago | Yes it is very over whelming, but you really need to follow a diet a little better, I am not preaching to you, but since you already have heart disease and HBP, you would greatly benefit from a healthy diet. Please try to follow it better, I know it is hard....but it does get easier as time goes along. Ask your doctor if you would benefit from taking Metformin for your diabetes, it is also a diet pill...which is what it was first established as. I think it has worked effectively for me. Maybe it would be great for you also. I hope it gets better for you, God Bless You!!!

No more sudden drops in my sugar after taking the medicine. I take at 8am and again at 6pm and my blood sugar has leveled out to between 106 to 129 which is really great for me. I also find that i don't have that want of something to eat all the time.maybe I can lose someof this weight I put on since I started taking all this medicine. Once again thank you so much.

6. kalav56 (773) | 9 months ago | If you have still not seen a doctor and want to do something about it before seeing a doctor, you can just follow this.Afew years back, my husband's report showed that he was tending towards it,[the figures were bordering above normal limits but not too dangerous to start insulin. The doctor prescribed a routine 1 Take a brisk walk for half an hour daily for at least five days a week. Cut down on sugar and starch intake. HAVE PLENTY OF GREEN VEGETABLES, SPROUTS, PULSE tHERE WAS ALSO A DIET PRESCRIBED--BUT THIS WILL VARY ACCORDING TO YOUR FOOD HABITS. Do not starve for too long.Eat food that is rich in fibre content. However, you can keep away from sugar controlling tablets only for some time and try to combat it with exercise and routine but you will have to start medication sometime later. After 4 to 5 years, my husband[he checked it again after a long time] was asked to start medicine .Last week he started it. Do not eat too many fried items, fatty kinds of food . Fruits like banana, mango are better avoided. Even grapes can be reduced. any type of greens are very good.

7. Chey1970 (583) | 9 months ago | My sister who passed away last July was a diabetic, she was diagnosed with it in her late teens. She had to do the insulin shots(ouch!), which she herself administrated. She also had to follow a very strict diet. Not only couldn't she have sweets of any kind, but she also had to watch her starch intake very closely. I wish you the best of luck with this.

kcook57 (856) | 9 months ago | Thank you Chey, and I have done all I was supposed to so I can keep from going on shots...(OUCH is right), I just don't think I can give myself a shot, I have a phobia with needles.

Chey1970 (583) | 9 months ago | I really can't say I blame you kcook. I couldn't give myself the shots either. I just have this thing about inflicting pain upon myself.

10. emma44 (965) | 9 months ago | diabetes has to do with the raising of the sugar level in the system, thats why diabetic people dont have to take sugar, most times they take proteins, and some other non sugary or little sugary foods, i think it has to do with reducing one's food intake
