Childhood Lessons? |
|
I'm interested in whether my friends were taken to dancing or music lessons as kids. Did your parents involve you in a lot of lessons or other activities like sports? I took piano and my sister took the violin. I would play the piano, and my sister would play the violation, and our little dog would howl up a storm! We usually had to take her into a bedroom and shut the door. What lessons did you have?

1. mbs730 (1889) | 5 months ago | I went for art, drama, swimming and that kind of thing. Never had music lessons. My daughter just finished her drama lesson and am trying to find another one soon available to her. She loved it.

3. lightningd (719) | 5 months ago | I think I was in fifth grade and my mom decided she was sending me to music lessions.. for Acordian!! YUCK. How uncool is that at that age? It lasted one lesson. When the teacher couldn't explain to me why a C sharp was the same as a D flat, and why not just call it one of them, she couldn't explain. I then vowed that when I had children, I would not force any "extra" stuff on them for MY amusement. I think alot of parents today get their kids involved in entirely too much stuff. They don't have time to be kids. Their entire day is structured around school, gymnastics, music lessons, swimming lessons, peewee sports. Both of my kids took an interest in rodeo when they were really little, but that was because we were at rodeos nearly every weekend. Their dad rode bulls then started team roping when he quit bull riding, and I competed in barrel racing. They started riding sheep, and the youngest decided he didn't want to do that and wanted to be a rodeo clown. When they got old enough to do youth rodeo, we started attending a place where they had open (adult) rodeos on Saturdays and youth rodeos on Sundays.. My youngest lost his interest totally and got into dirt bikes, my oldest, however, went on to become the state reserve champion high school team roper three years in a row. He is now in college on a full ride scholarship for the rodeo team. The youngest just started getting into motocross last fall, and will enter his first race this spring. I think because it was never forced, our kids found what they truly wanted to do. When the youngest was in third grade, he got interested in playing drums through the elementary school music teacher. He is now in high school jazz band and loves it. He plays all percussion instruments. It was never forced. He chose to do it. I think if I had forced any of it on them they would have resented it. I wanted them to choose hobbies they would enjoy the rest of their lives.

Anhedonia (1779) | 5 months ago | I know what you mean. I wanted to take piano lessons and enjoyed it for quite awhile. When I got older, I wanted to drop the lessons for other things, so my mom said okay. I don't like pushy parents either.

4. Transdisc (12485) | 5 months ago | Your sister played the violation, huh, Anhedonia? Ha! I took piano lessons for a few months. It was horrid. My instructor was so mean and impatient. I was seven years old at the time. Thankfully, he was involved in an automobile accident that didn't kill him but almost did and so my lessons were kaput. It sounds like you and your sister and your little dog had a lot of fun, though. I would have like to do that with my brothers.

5. book1962 (9203) | 5 months ago | I had to take piano lessons as we got an old one as a present from an old lady who moved and couldnt take it with her. I hated piano lessons but was not allowed to give up on this from 9 to 18 years old. I learned to play the cello later, started with 12 and liked that much better.

6. kbourgerie (1534) | 5 months ago | My stepmother made us take swimming lessons every summer. I absolutely hated it. Fortunately, my children have taught themselves, so they don't have to go through the torture I felt that I went through.

Anhedonia (1779) | 5 months ago | Mine taught themselves for the same reason. I got really scared at swimming lessons, mainly I think because I was blind as a bat and had to take my glasses off.

7. AmbiePam (10047) | 5 months ago | I took piano lessons, starting at the age of five. My sister through the years took piano lessons, flute lessons, voice lessons, and saxophone lessons. She didn't ever conquer the sax because she had so much going on. But she won several national competitions in the flute, and a couple state competitions in singing.

Anhedonia (1779) | 5 months ago | Wow, pretty impressive! I liked piano lessons most of the time, but I didn't like the recitals.

AmbiePam (10047) | 5 months ago | I've often wondered in the early days of the child taking the piano lessons, were recitals more painful for the children, or the parents? lol
