When you were little (but also now) did you use to name your Teddy Bears or stuffed toys? If so how did you decide on the names?

I love teddies and stuffed toys in general and always did, so when i was little even if i was very allergic to dust and should have done without, i was always getting them as presents...I was always coming up with names for them, often helped by my mother...the names would be related to literally everything, from some movie character, to things in my life, to totally random...

Yes, I had a few!!!

My very first one I had when I was only a few months old. It was a white rabbit and didn't have a name.

My favourite one was a blue tiger and of course it had to be called 'Tigger' (from Winnie the Pooh!). It was thread-bare, it had been sewn back together so many times... but I have still got it.

I had a lot of others, Humpty Dumpty (not original name as it looked just like the nursery rhyme), goldie was another one - gives you an idea what colour it was! Anyway, I wasn't that good at picking names - I'm still not.

What about you - what names did you give yours?

myLot reputation of 75/100. JoMarch (2195)  4 years ago

Aw they sound cute names anyway !
Apparently i managed to name my very first cat-like stuffed toy "Piero" even if i was like 1 year old and no one in my familiy or friends was called that lol it is still a mystery where that came from...

then i had one very dear to me that i bought in Ireland...it was a teddy bear wearing a white sweater with a shamrock on the front so he became Paddy Bear (pathetic i know! but better than Snoopy like a friend suggested LOL)

And antoehr of my favourites was Sasha the Bear named after my favourite figure skater LOL yeah can you say fangirl :p

I had so many more with totally random names...like a had a little bobtail dog named Smog because my mom used to dog sit one just like that with that name :p

Every single one of my stuffed animals had a name when I was a kid. I had a ton of them too, because I was addicted to those crane games... I still am actually. rasp

I still name my stuffed animals, too. The first one my husband bought me was a stuffed alligator, and his name is "Mr. Green Turtle". It's a Ranma 1/2 reference.

A lot of my names for toys are either anime or movie references, or book references, but some of them are named after people or attributes they have. I once named a stuffed cat after guy I was talking to online's username, and when he made me mad I kicked the poor toy cat around the room.

I remember two of my teddys in particular, well ok one was more a horse, still a cuddly toy tho.
The horse was named pegasus,it was something my gran had made,it was stuffed with old stockingslol
Then i had a teddy named Fergie, named after Alex Ferguson,my dad named him that because if i remember correctly Alex Ferguson was manager at Falkirk FC,he is a hugh fan.
Oh & my son had a bear, again made by gran, knitted.
Sadly his head fell off, loli know its not funny really. He was named Stuart after my brother.
Haha good post Jo,always nice to be taken back.

Yes, I also name them. I also name my other toys but not all of them. At first, at don't actually name them, but I always give descriptions to them, until my mom get used to that description I give to my teddies and it became their name. It was the start, from then on I name my teddies and dolls based on their description- color, shape, texture, color of the eyes, dress, the brand name or any combination. When I grew a little older, I associate the decription and the giver, I give it an acronym. Now that there are so many of them , I don't name them anymore. I don't even recall the names I gave to some. I've handed some of my teddies and dolls to my child and it's up to her now if she wants to keep its name or give another name.

Some of my dolls and stuffed toys were named after favorite comic strip characters, and--as I got older--some got named after crushes and boyfriends. Others got named after the people who had given them to me. Some got named after people they reminded me of.

I remember when Uncle Kermit told me he was going to send a gift to me, and he gave me some clues about what it would be by saying that it wouldn't be this texture or that texture, so I assumed it would probably be fuzzy. It turned out to be a bullfrog carved out of wood--but I named it Fuzzy.

He sent me a big stuffed turtle another time. His "skin" was made out of a kind of stretchy material (similar to a knit) but was colored like tapestry from The Middle East.

I knew a guy who was from Saudi Arabia and decorated the apartment he shared with his roomie with some kind of tapestry with a similar pattern, so I named my stuffed turtle Mohamed.

Russell has a whole bunch of stuffed animals as well as ones made out of other kinds of material. Sometimes, he names them after the people who gave them to him. Other times, he makes up names based on what they look like. And, other times, he just gives them random names such as he did to Rascal (his favorite stuffed dog) and Mutsky (his second favorite stuffed dog).

thumbup I've just thought of another one!

The year my classmates and I had our 25th reunion (1996), I got this top with a baby white tiger on it. The top could either be a nightshirt or a long top, so it came with the option of buying a stuffed baby white tiger for a few dollars more. Of course, I bit--and named her Reunion.

She sits atop my TV to this day looking out on my messy living room! LOL

My sister gives the best names among us. I used to give mine, but they sound funny or boring. Like for example, Piggy Blue or Wolf. hehe.

The names she gave were Tiber (for a teddy bear), Ice Buko (for another cream colored teddy with brown spots for its paws), Eli the Elephant. Aren't they cute?

Of course, there are stuff toys that already have name tags when we bought them.

My bear's name of course was teddy. But I think alot of names come from the childs inability to say a word. We had a rabbit named bundie because my son couldn't say bunny. We have alot of nick names in our family due to this.

My teddy bear was called BooBoo but not sure were I got the name from I think it was a cartoon bear from the TV when I was a child. Unfortunately I no longer have him but wrote a poem when I was eight about him or really about people needing someone they can turn to no matter what. I don't know whether I have shared this one with you before but here goes.

Teddy Bear

Soft and cuddly, comforting, someone to cling to when the weather is rain,
A shoulder to cry on, to shout at, to love, seeming sometimes greater than people you love,
Always there, never strays, you go away, but he stays,
You love him so deeply, hate him at times, but that poor little teddy bear, he never minds.

aww thats so sweet!! brought me a tear really because i miss my teddies that i left at parents house...i have pics of them in my cell...yeah thats pathetic LOL but they make me think of mom too...we both were like little girls with my teddies and used to make up stories about them even up to this day...lol like poor little paddy bear had been abandoned by his evil mom and i saved him LOL yeah and then sasha the bear was over sensitive and always crying :p

BooBoo...mom had a bear called that way too (that she never forgave grandma for throwin away) ... ithink he was Yogi friend...you know the one from Yellowstone? in italian they were Yoghy e Bubu...which in English you wouldwrite Yogi and BooBoo so maybe its that :p
