Basic Equipment for Scrapbooking |
|
I'd like to have a go at scrapbooking as i've seen some wonderful examples of this craft. However, I'm not very good at sticking with new crafts and have a tendancy to have lots of things half finnished.
So, to save me spending a fortune on loads of stuff, I thought I would ask on here what is the minimum equipment that I need to start this new hobby? It sounds like it could be quite a frugal one, as I'm always collecting up pretty items, papers and fabrics which could be recycled into a scrapbook page.
I'm really looking forwards to this. I have a scrapbooking workshop planned in a few weeks but I want to experiment a bit first.

1. giftsandbagscom (12032) | 2 years ago | Walmart has the beginner books for sale. I know I started with one myself. They have pretty paper and such inside. I think it was less than 20.00$ also

GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | That's probably exactly what I need, a beginners pack of some sort. Thanks for the tip, I'd not have thought of tryng Walmart for something like this.

GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | I guess the dollar store type stuff would be OK for a beginner. I don't want to spend a fortune before I even discover if I'm any good at it!

3. cher913 (13657) | 2 years ago | what i would do is go to the library and get some books out on scrapbooking. these will help you with a basic equipment list that you need. also, i would decide what pics you want to scrapbook BEFORE you start buying a whole bunch of stuff!

|
|
GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | That's a great idea, but books are really dangerous for me - I see one idea, then I see another, and the next thing I know I have 10 projects on the go!!!
Do you always plan out your theme before you start then? I sort of imagined that I'd be inspired by the bits & pieces I had available.

|
cher913 (13657) | 2 years ago | well, i do get a lot of books on scrap booking and card making out of the library and i write down the ideas on 3 x 5 cards for an idea file...

GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | Ooooh, an ideas file. Now you're talking!!

4. enchantedleppard (1338) | 2 years ago | I bought a kit from a shopping channel. Thats how I got my idea to start.. I've made one scrapbook, and have the items for at least 3 more but I just cant find the time to do it!

|
GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | I think I'm going to have to stick to making individual pages & perhaps framing them or something. Making a whole scrapbook sounds like such a big job that I just know it'll put me off.

5. coffeebreak (4849) | 2 years ago | I'm a 10 year scrapper vet! And it doesn't have to be expensive as it seems. I started from literally nothing. I have a blog I started and share techniques, layouts, ways to find inexpensive supplies, just alot of info and it is all my personal experience and layouts. Check your junk drawer at home...you'll find lots of scrapbook embellishments there.. read my blog about it! In my profile it is called Scrapbook Layout Ideas.
Then while you grocery shop, collect the pink Box Tops 4 Education labels (little squares really) and send them to me and my grand daughter and we will swap you for FREE scrapbook supplies. It is a fund raiser for her school and I have so much scrapbook stuff I thought I'd help us both and others. Send us your box tops, we'll send you FREE scrapbook supplies. That blog is also in my profile - Scrapbook for Box Tops.
But just don't let the hoopla get to you. You can spend bunch of money on a layout or just a buck or two or less and the layout can be just as beautiful and full of memories.
Got some old christmas cards? BIrthday cards? Cut out parts of the card to make die cuts!
It is so much fun and so easy, you'll have more supplies than you know of and not have spent hardly a buck!

GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | Thank you*so* much for your response Coffeebreak. I'll check out your blog for ideas, I never can have enough.
The scheme you run with your grandaughter sounds like a great one. Congratulations! Unfortnately they don't do the Box Tops where I am otherwise I'd be tempted to join in, but I hope soemeone else here reads your response & takes part.

coffeebreak (4849) | 2 years ago | Trust me... it isn't that expensive for scrapbooking. Things have come down SO much these last fewyears - it was terribly expensive when I started, which is why I had to find other ways of getting supplies - I couldn't afford to buy them! Just remember you don't have to shop the scrapbook isle to find scrapbook supplies! They are all over the place. I shop the hardware store for things! I have a post in my blog about that. Gets to be rather fun just to see where you can find things!
And on the box tops - ask others to save them for you. They have long term expriation dates, so you don't have to worry much about them expiring if you buy now - they are good till 2010! So mention it to others to save for you and we can swap.
Scrapbooking is so much fun!

GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | Hmmm... the hardware store. There's a thought!

|
|
coffeebreak (4849) | 2 years ago | Oh, I"m tellin' ya.. it is great at the hardware store - going through all those little cubbies or drawers for thel ittel things. The metal effect is great for the masculine layouts and also if you are doing one related to tools, home improvement or other "constructioN" style work. The embellishments fit the theme! Little tiny chains to hold tags or for a pull on a tag out of a pocket. .... so much fuN!

6. SukiSmiles (1564) | 2 years ago | Scrapbooking kits are a great way to get started and all of your paper and embellishments will match. As far as tools go, a simple stright cutter, black pen and adhesive are important. My girl friend and I have a site called www.scrappinsistersaz.com where we have a blog and podcasts. Our first podcast talks about our favorite tools. Feel free to check it out. Have fun scrapbooking.

7. svitanovic (120) | 2 years ago | The best things in life are FREE. When I first started I looked for scraps everywhere. The best place would ne to go to Lowes or Home Depot and get the sample wallpaper for free of course and use that on your layouts as tags, cut out the pictures of the flowers, boats or whatever. I still use mine. The things that are a must have are straight cutter, scissors, glue dots, glue or tape and maybe vellum phrases as you move on stickers etc. Good luck and the things you find in the street like flat rocks, coins, runover metal objects. Since its spring time go out and cut some flowers and press them they are the BEST of the Best craft supply ever (free again). I would also like to say this as you continue on your quest. It does not matter how good you are, whgat matters most is that you enjoy doing it, if you enjoy it then every page you create is your own form of art and be proud that it is not like everyone elses. Who knows you could even start your own scrapbooking trend.. I hope you enjoy.

GreenMoo (2635) | 2 years ago | Thanks for a really inspirational reply! I used to use wallpaper cut off samples for doing crafts with my son when he was younger, so I don't know why I didn't think of using them in scrapbooking. And I already press flowers which we use in cards. Again, I've no idea why I didn't think of using them in scrapbooking too. Doh!
