do you cremate your pet(s)? email this discussion to a friend?

I cremate ALL my pets when they pass away and keep their ashes in urns. It doesn't matter what kind of pet it is. I have cremated dogs, cats, hamsters, guinea pigs and birds. I have even cremated day old puppies. I do not believe in throwing any animal away, even if it is no longer alive. My wish is to have all my pets ashes buried with me so they are with me always. What do you do with your pets when they have passed on?

My pets are apart of my family & if something were to happen to them then, yes I would take care of them in death just as I always did in life.

I have only buried one animal, a parakeet. We buried it because we were pouring concrete and felt it was safe that way as it would not be dug up by one of our animals or another animal.

Depends on how close I was with my pet. I've had some that just didn't care to get close to me while I've had a few that were like velcro to me and took care of me as I did of them. Those are the ones that I have cremated and now sitting in urns on my mantle to be buried with me when I die. I have another but just couldn't afford to have him cremated so he has his special place out back with a small headstone on it that I carved myself out of a brick. Otherwise, since we now have our own property, I have set aside a small space out back by the woods just for them when they leave this world for a better place above. I simply can't afford to have every pet that passes away cremated is all. Besides, when you die your spirit rises out of your body leaving just a shell behind. I'd rather remember my furbabies in my heart than in the ground.

Yes, cremating can be very expensive. I have learned though that if I go directly through the cremation place rather then my vet, I can save myself over $100. An example, I always cremate my kids' hamsters for them. When I went through the vet once I was charged almost $150. When I decided to call the cremation place and see if I could go through them directly, it cost me only $30.

Wow! I really wish I would of known bout this when I had to put Lightning down. He was my lil man, never ever leaving the yard whenever he was outside and was always a character when he wanted in, pawing on the patio door windows looking cute as can be. Next time, I'm going to find out who the vet goes thru for cremation and call them first. Thanks a bunch for the advice. Much appreciated!

I am sure they place where you live will do it outside a vet too. I have family in other states and that is the way that they do it too.

i guess try to bury them somewhere and i try to move on...when i was younger i have always wanted all my pets to die with me so we can be buried together in the same coffin...once i was chatting with a neighbor, and they said they just cremated their cat, and i suggested that one of the couple should make sure all the cremations is buried with the first of the couple that dies...so that the pets go with the dead owner, at least one of them.
when they die, their spirit moves on elsewhere like dead people. but for some reason cremation makes me nervous. so, when you die, you will be with your late pets anyway...your souls are together in the afterlife...while your body is under the ground decomposing or cremated.
so really i dont think it really matters, but depends on the particular person and what the person wants to do with their body or their pets body. it is your choice and what makes you happy...

Whether I be cremated or buried, I want all my pets put with me. Might sound strange to a lot of people but, I know others who want the same thing. Keeping their ashes I guess is a way of keeping a part of them with you, even though their soul has moved on.

I also cremate them, but, now I'm not sure what to do with the urns. I now have a china cabinet with a few in there. I'm always meaning to set up a little memorial area with photos etc, but never got around to it. I'm too busy with the animals I have left.

I have urns sitting on my fireplace mantle - most of them have a picture of the pet next to it. My kids have urns of their critters on shelves in their rooms. Ever since my kids were little, they have wanted their animals cremated (meaning their guinea pigs and hamsters) and I have always done so for them as I could never see throwing them in the garbage and breaking their hearts.

Hi YorkieBear. It's always nice to talk to other dog lovers. i have a Terrier silky. they look like Yorkies but are bigger. She is a rescue as are all my animals. I to have my animals cremated and will be buried with me. Have you ever heard of the Rainbow Bridge? it's where all our animals wait for us when they pass. I truly believe this. I also believe that if weather there is a heaven or not my animals will still be with me. Have you ever heard of Best Friend's? It's in Utah and is a most wonderful place. when they heard that the dogs that B(*&^%&d ball player was using for fighting they asked to take them instead of putting them to sleep. they were not allowed to take all of them but were allowed to take 22. I am very happy to say that many of them have been calmed down and retrained. they are going to new homes. The one's that can not be retrained will be kept in secure and safe arears were they will be safe and comfortable.

Your comment brought tears to my eyes. Yes, I have heard of Rainbow Bridge. I believe too and I truly hope that they are there waiting for me. The only Best Friend's that I have heard of is the place that I use to cremate my animals.
I am glad though to hear there is a Best Friend's like the one you described. I want to recommend a good book to you. It is called Getting Lucky by Susan Marino. It is about how one special dog found love and a second change at Angel's Gate. It is a true story. A tear jerker. I recommend it to every pet love.

If you want to read a great book read Marley and Me. they are making it a movie and I can't wait to see it. There are a few books out there that are really bad. One is about the dogs the troops find in Irag. I only read 2 chapters and had to stop. The second book is by an author who has the nerve to say how much he loves the dog and how they are soul mates. At the end because the dog starts being a problem he decides the dog would rather be dead. Besides it would cost him Nine thousand dollars to help the dog. It my be a mental block because I can't remember his name but I am surprised that I wasn't locked up for the e mail i sent him. I cursed him out so bad i thought I would have to send my PC out to have its mouth cleaned out.

Sorry, I forgot to tell you that Best Friends is a no kill shelter in Utah that rescus all the animals that are deserted or lost and takes very good care of them. it is a big shelter covering hundreds and hundres of acers. For a real treat and joy of knowing there are people like this look into them

I read Marley & Me. A wonderful book. One of those books that I read in just a few days.

I good book I would recommend to all animal lovers is "Getting Lucky" by Susan Marino. It is about how one special dog found love and a second chance at Angel's Gate. Angel's Gate is an animal hospice.

Those two books that you mentioned, what were the names of them. The one about the dogs in Iraq, even though I am sure it was sad and had a bunch of horror stories, I like to
read stories about animals that are true. I usually shed a lot of tears but I do end up liking them.

I used to work for a non kill shelter for years. I really enjoyed it but it was sad to see so many homeless animals or animals that people had for years and just decided to dump.
