I was watching TV the other day and yet another so called Hollywood "expert" was spouting there rhetoric about the state of the US and other political statements as well. I am SO sick of these people like Susan Sarandon and Johnie Depp, people that make more money than a Saudi oil man telling me their opinion on life, the state of our government and how we should live! Doesn't it just rag you to hear these people who have so much complaining about our government; about how wrong they are? You can't tell me that their life is so bad! This country has been VERY good to them and yet they complain! And how about Rosie O'Donnal ranting and raving about how we brought 9/11 on ourselves? Really!Do you really think that the people in those towers were attacking the Iraq people or wished them any harm? The thing I find so amusing is that if she WAS an Iraqi and was complaining about the government in Iraq they would kill her for her beliefs and even her sexual affiliation! So why would she defend some country that wouldn't defend her? Am I the only one out there that feels this way?

No you are not the only one. I completely agree with you. The stars in Hollywood are so completely out of touch with reality that I don't even know how they can say anything critical about the government. They don't have to worry about gas prices, the crashing house market, or even the failing economy. They probably don't even know what the gas prices are right now, because whatever the price rises too, it's just pocket change for these guys. They have no concept of what is going on. Leave the problems of the nation to the people we put in office. I mean I agree that President Bush is probably one of the wordt Presidents the nation has ever seen, but the truth is we can't blame allt the country's problems on him. Trust me, I would not want his job. If these celebrities think they can do it better, let them try. If they ever did get power, we would definatley be in a whole lot worse condition.

I totally agree with your assessment of their attitude! I don't agree that Bush is the worst but that is your opinion. I do think his job is tough though.

People in Hollywood are completely clueless when it comes to politics. They are disgustingly rich and try to act like they care about the "common man". They have no idea what it's like to work a real job. They earn their money by doing movies and lame endorsements. Meanwhile they criticize big business where business people actually work for their money.

The best was back when Barbara Streisand, Alec Baldwin and those other morons said they'd leave the country if Bush was elected president. Funny who that never happened and now they pretend they never said such things.

No kidding! I wish I had a way to ask them to please do what they said they would do and just LEAVE! I think we would all be happier!

Hello Hornswaggled,

I have to be honest with you. I only responded to this discussion because I absolutely love your I.D. Geesh, just hearing the word brings a smile to my face. I have not heard this term since I was a wee lass, and it has always tickled my funny bone. Great choice!

Now here's the reason why, had it not been for your fabulous I.D., I would have passed over this discussion: Because I don't give a hoot what the Hollywood elite have to say.

There are a few exceptions, though generally speaking they would be from thespians who have committed their energies to other more noble, pursuits. And, only if they struck me as possessing the kind of wisdom that generally only accompanies age. And, they are few and far between.

Hollywood elites, for the most part, live an isolated, sheltered and protected life. Could anyone sincerely compare Hollywood, California to anyplace else on the planet? There's a reason why it's nicknamed "Hollyweird"! What do they know about the real world? Only what their limited exposure allows. Which means that they are generally developing their perceptions from other sheltered, protected individuals. That would not fit my definition of wisdom.

Moreover, a significant percentage of the Hollywood elite have little or no advanced education or other life experience. Which makes them experts only in the field of 'make believe'. Rosie is no exception. And, in regard to Rosie, why would I let someone who is that disturbed have any effect on me? There is no question that she suffers from mental illness, and has since she was a child, when she would break her own bones to get attention from her father. That behavior would definitly fall outside of 'mainstream'

The only reason that these people have any power to affect is because we give it to them. If we all stopped allowing these rank amateurs to affect our socio-political views, then they would be resigned to limit their hubris to the fields of 'pretend' and 'make-believe'.

Long story short -- their opinions are just that, opinions. And, we all know what 'they' say about opinions.

Thanks so much for the input! I really do love it here even though I have been ranting a lot lately! I hope no one takes offense at my attitude. Usually I'm a mild mannered ( well maybe that's stretching it a little bit) mom with a lot on my plate! Hope everyone enjoys the site as much as I do!

I've noticed people have been complaining about this forever but when push comes to shove it depends on which celebrities are speaking out on which side of the aisle whether they have a right to voice their opinions or not. Sean Hannity, to name just one, has frequently had as guests on both his show and the one he co-hosts with Alan Colmes various actors, athletes and other celebrities who just happen to share his conservative views but if a star who is more liberal appears elsewhere or in any way "makes news" by stating a different opinion from his own he or she should shut up and sing/act/play - whatever the case may be. The fact is WE the public have made these celebrities rich and famous so WE have given them the platform from which to spout their beliefs. WE also have every right to not go to their movies or concerts, watch their TV shows or buy their CD's.
Some celebrities are known for their activism in various issues and causes, others simply appear on whatever show to which their invited or give interviews in different publications and they're ASKED for their opinions on politics and other issues of the day. My point is, they have the same right to give their opinion as any of us do, they've simply "earned" a larger platform from which to give it. The market will decide in the end. If enough people are dissatisfied enough to stop supporting their work then nobody will care to ask their opinion anymore, will they? I for one do appreciate those celebrities who have devoted much of their time and money to raising awareness about different diseases and causes and those who have truly at least tried to "make a difference" beyond entertaining the rest of us. In other words, there are some who really "put their money where their mouths are" and I applaud them for that.

I do have a question about one of your comments here:
"And how about Rosie O'Donnal ranting and raving about how we brought 9/11 on ourselves? Really!Do you really think that the people in those towers were attacking the Iraq people or wished them any harm?"
What does 9/11 or "those towers" have to do with the Iraqi people? (The answer is absolutely nothing!)

I am referring to a comment she made that we attacked the Iraqi people and that is why they attacked us.She is referring to the fanatical religious people in middle eastern countries. I imagine the last war, desert storm. I really don't know what she is thinking. I am only responding to her comments, such as they are.

Your definitely not the only one that feels this way. But most people in hollywood are like that. They don't take time to analyze situations like out government's one because I don't think they actually care! They say that stuff to keep the attention of their fans or because their publicist said so. The majority of the are rich and don't have a serious care in the world because they don't have to. They don't have real "lives" like we do. If they miss a day of work they don't have to worry about bills being paid or things like that. They dont have to worry about getting their children off to school on time, monthly house maitenece, and money management like we do. They just give out a wad of cash and everything falls into place.

I think Hollywood stars ala Sarandon, Depp and yes, even O’Donnell, have a right to their opinions.

However if they intend to use their voices to sway my thinking, they’d better stay away from my brain.

O’Donnell is way off base with her rants about 9/11.

If Depp, Sarandon and others have complaints AND can offer viable solutions, I have no issue in their speaking out. It’s their right as Americans.

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” O’Donnell speaks loudly and has a big mouth!

Yes I do believe that even a loud mouthed, uneducated, bigoted blabbermouth has the right to say what they mean. What I have a problem with is someone that can use their status and wealth to stand on their soap box and post their rhetoric! I don't have millions and I don't have anyone that really cares what I think because I am not one of the Hollywood elite! If it was a more even world then I would get the air time as these bone heads and so would every other hard working middle class American. Thats' what I have a problem with! That and their idea that they should tell me how to vote! None of their business!!!

Whether you consider them blabbermouths, probably depends on whether their opinion matches your own opinion. They have as much right to voice their opinion as anyone else. The media takes more notice of what they say because of their celebrity, just as it follows their love lives and pregnancies. And they are as qualified to speak on politics as a lot of so-called experts that we see on Fox and other channels.

It's interesting that the most vocal actors and actresses are often some of the most talented: Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Barbara Streisand. These people are clearly not dummies. I tend to think that to do their jobs as well as they do they have great emotional intelligence and insight into the human condition, and experience of many walks of life and cultures. The people that live in ivory towers are often the politicians born into wealth and privilege e.g. George Bush.

myLot reputation of 79/100. hornswaggled (872)   ranked 211 out of 3,860 in politics  7 months ago

Ok so you say they are talented and I have to agree that yes they are talented in acting...not speaking what is needed in this country. When was the last time you saw one of them on the bread line feeding the poor? Driving tractor? I think the most qualified people to speak their mind about what is needed in this country are people that can't feed their babies because of poverty; people who like farmers feed the world; people like the ones that give up their holiday to feed the homeless! Not the elite, whether they are politicians, actors or any other rich privileged person who spends most of their time trying to get our attention by their outrages antics! And before I go any further; when was the last time one of them(or any other president for that matter) gave us $600 a person to stimulate the economy? Answer that for me will you.

myLot reputation of 71/100. bravenewworld (344)   ranked 1,520 out of 3,860 in politics  7 months ago

Actors are not born rich, in most cases. And they're not usually born and raised in Hollywood. Unlike Bush and many politicians, actors have had experience of hard times. And quite likely they have friends and family that are still living in the real world.

I'm not sure what Bush's stimulus package has to do with anything. But he's cut many programs that helped the poor, and the economy has tanked under his tenure. Most of us are worse off than we were 8 years ago. I'd rather listen to most of these Hollywood blabber mouths than any of the nonsense that comes out of his mouth.

myLot reputation of 79/100. hornswaggled (872)   ranked 211 out of 3,860 in politics  7 months ago

So you wouldn't have a problem with some of the hate things that they say about the President of the US? I suppose that you didn't get upset when people called the last president "Slick Willy"? I didn't like that either even though he really did deserve some slack for the horrendous behavior not only as a president but as a father and husband! I believe that you should treat the person that is the leader of our country with respect no matter what. I was raised to believe that you should treat everyone with respect even if they don't deserve it.

I agree with you completely. The higher standing people seem to not understand that we had friends and family in those twin towers. They don't seem to understand that when those planes hit us we saw our free country being invaded. They don't seem to understand that it's the people like us that is keeping this country from having any more of those invaders that we call terrorist. If it were not for our people in Iraq right now they would have already tried many more attacks. Rosie O' Donnal needs to check her resources. She needs to live with a mother that has a son in the war and is wondering if she is ever going to see him again, she needs to care and be more open-minded about what America is going through, and what we would be going through if not for our government.

myLot reputation of 79/100. hornswaggled (872)   ranked 211 out of 3,860 in politics  7 months ago

Hulk I really do believe you understand what I am trying to get across! I don't have a problem with other opinions but these pampered people have no understanding of what they are doing to our country when they make these comments! No I don't have a son in the armed forces but he wanted to go. He just wasn't eligible. And I would have been proud and yes scared. But he is a man and not my baby and needs to make his own choices. I also don't think that they realize ( or maybe they do!) that their comments are hurting our countries by empowering the very people that would kill each and every one of us; not just the ones that would kill back. This conversation reminds me of the story about the guy that went into the woods and lived with the bears so that he could show that they were not what everybody thought they were....he got eaten! Moral of the story....your enemies are still your enemies even if you love them!
Great answer Hulk!
