KISS calls modern bands 'useless and pathetic'
March 12, 2008 02:55pm
KISS have claimed they are ageless, universally appealing rockers and have called modern bands "useless and pathetic" on their arrival in Australia.
The band, celebrating its 35th year, is playing after the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne on Sunday night and is promising value for money.
Good economy or no economy, we have no intentions of stopping," said frontman Paul Stanley.
"We gave up doing this for money a long time ago, we love it, but we still get paid."
Like the good businessman that he is, KISS co-founding member Gene Simmons had a shot at the opposition while promising a full-on ear-blasting concert, none of this coming out and strumming a guitar and calling it a show.
"Rock and roll is in a pathetic state," he drawled.
"Bands think they can can get up on stage and strum their guitars and then download it - it's useless and pathetic.
"We're sick and tired of seeing bands getting up on stage and not giving value for your buck."
Stanley and Simmons, who were by guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, said they have been living out their dreams for the past 35 years.
"We not only want to live up to the legend (of KISS) but we want to exceed it, and that's why we are here," Stanley said.
But does KISS ever get worried that they will lose touch with their audience, with influences like rap and rave music at the forefront of the Y generation.
"KISS music is universal, ageless - we always find a new audience," said Stanley.
"What we sing about is celebrating life, about enjoying yourself.
"We don't need to to look for an audience - the audience finds us."

I think the way they speak as in talking about all modern bands as a whole is quite pathetic itself.
It sounds like they haven't even watched half the bands they are labeling here, so wouldn't even know for sure.

Rap and rave and hip pop can't say that. Kiss really does have the sound that will truly outlast anything that todays wannabees can put out. LONG LIVE REAL ROCK N ROLL!!!

Rock on!!!

I laughed and told him they were a comic book fad that would only last a few years. My friend hasn't stopped laughing at me yet. ANYWAY-yeah they've produced some timeless rock classics and influenced countless thousands of kids into picking up instruments and living out their rock 'n' roll dreams. But as for rock 'n' roll being in a "pathetic state"- bands like Seether, Godsmack and Disturbed, among others, still carry the rock message to kids far and wide-and to some of us older rockers too (I'm 48). Gene has always been a little full of himself; but we've all come to realise, that's just Gene.

myklj999 (7262) | 2 years ago | Uh...what planet did you come from? This isn't an idea; it's a discussion about an American rock 'n' roll band named "Kiss". I guess you've never heard of them, though I'd have thought this impossible. I forget sometimes that American culture is not all pervasive, and that most people in the world have actually not heard of Illinois, the state I live in. It's a much bigger world than I realize most days.

Ok, a bit tongue-in-cheek, but seriously, that's the pot calling the kettle black.
They are from my generation, couldn't stand their vibe then, have even less regard (that would be zero) now.

I paid close to $100 for a seat 5 years ago, and it was well worth every penny. The songs were great, the pyrotechnics were awesome, Paul flying through the air was priceless. How many bands give this good of a show.

Even though I don't go out of my way to try to buy up every album they've released, they have made a lot of good music over their 35 year career. Furthermore, they, themselves, were pioneers, in that they were probably either one of the first or THE first band to wear a lot of make-up.
I don't blame them for feeling that way. Quite a lot of stuff on the Billboard charts nowadays, it is a strange wonder how they got on there. It seems that the entire music industry seems to have gone haywire.Music sales continue to decline, but the RIAA seems to be wanting to place blame on everything else BUT the industry itself. They attempt to blame file sharing as a cause, & even tried filing lawsuits against individuals, individuals who know nothing about file sharing, & when they lose, they start going after children. The real reason for the slump in music sales is actually the music industry itself.
There are a lot of great bands out there that are not very well-known. Most of them, the music industry chooses to ignore. Being that the technology is now readily available to do so, many of these bands & artists that the music industry chooses to ignore burn their own CD's & sell them at a significantly lower price than what the actual music industry is marketing. Furthermore, the music of these unsigned bands are a lot better than a lot of what the major labels are shoving in our faces.
Another problem is not many are going out to buy a CD just for that one song. When the transition from VD's (I mean Vinyl Discs - so get your mind out of the gutter!) to CD took place, that was around the time music sales started to decline. They did make CD singles that were a lot cheaper than the full album for a short while, but for some unknown reason, they stopped making them.
What happened to all of the good songwriters? They are out there, but quite often, when a major artist has a contract with a major label, they put their new material together, & then some music executive who knows nothing about what the public wants changes things around, & that takes away from the overall quality of the new album. Then they turn around & blame the artists when the album does not sell well.
I scratch my head & wonder what is the members of the comittee who decides to induct the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame have been smoking. There are a lot of popular bands & artists out there who qualify for induction, but are ignored, KISS being one of them. They recently have inducted talantless people, & even those who are not considered rock & roll.
I think the entire music industry needs to be revamped.

| | 8. Tantrums (946) | 4 months ago | I couldn't agree more to this statement by KISS. True that most, but not all, bands nowadays are just crap, screaming ear splitting noises! Pathetic is what I call those bands whom they call their selves as rockers!
