Its been said again and again by smokers that its hard to stop the habit. I am a non-smoker myself as I dont liket he smell of smoke or tobacco.

But to help you out girl, I know that there are a lot of remedies already out there and I think you should consult a doctor and preferably an internist coz they know what to do in order for you to really take the necessary and right steps to quit your smoking habits.

As I can see from your picture, you are still very young and its not too late to stop before you get any desease out if it. Also think of your future kids and family as well.

Hope u start it out and enjoy your life as logn as you can. Good luck!

Hello dear purelytrina. I have no experience of smoking as I do not smoke. I do not find any fun from smoking as I am afraid of my health ruined by smoking. Well, my father-in-law made a great decision to stop smoking after he had smoked for three decades. I admire him for his determination on what he has decided to do. He has completely given up smoking. I think that so long as you are persistent, you will be a success. Have a try, my dear friend.

The methods to quit smoking are
At this time the most effective methods for quitting is a combination of nicotine replacement products and the antidepressant drug bupropion bolstered by counselling.
1. Nicotine replacement
Nicotine replacement products provide low doses of nicotine that do not contain the contaminants found in smoke. They are proving to be twice as helpful as other standard quitting methods. Replacement products include nicotine patches, gums, nasal sprays, and inhalers. Side effects of any nicotine replacement product may include headaches, nausea, and other gastrointestinal problems. People often experience sleeplessness in the first few days, particularly with the patch, but the insomnia usually passes. Patients using very high doses are more likely to experience symptoms, and reducing the dose can prevent them. Certain individuals like people with heart disease, pregnant women, small children may need to avoid nicotine replacement products.
Nicotine patches: Nicotine patches, or transdermal nicotine, can be an effective way to quit smoking. The quit rate for patch users is around 20% after six months. Nicotine patches are available over the counter, but it is best to consult a doctor before using them, particularly people with any medical problems.
Nicotine gum: Nicotine gum (Nicorette), available over the counter, has also been effective for a number of people. Some prefer it to the patch because they can control the nicotine dosage and chewing satisfies the oral urge. Long-term dependence may be a problem with this method.
Nicotine inhaler: The nicotine inhaler resembles a plastic cigarette holder. It comes with a number of nicotine cartridges which are inserted into the inhaler. It has some specific advantages over other slower nicotine replacement products:
Nicotine nasal spray: The nasal spray satisfies immediate cravings by providing doses of nicotine rapidly, and thus may play a useful role in conjunction with slower acting nicotine replacement therapies.
Nicotine tablet: A nicotine tablet that is held under the tongue is also very useful.
2. Alternative and ther Methods for Quitting
Scheduled reduction: One study showed that people who used a systematic withdrawal schedule were twice as likely to quit as those who went cold turkey. The procedure involves the following steps:
Divide the number of minutes per day awake by the number of daily cigarettes; the result is the minute-long wait between smokes.
Set up a schedule with time intervals based on this result and using a timer, smoke only at those intervals; if the "cigarette appointment" is missed by more than five minutes, the smoker must skip that cigarette.
The following week, one-third fewer cigarettes are used and the smoking time is recalculated based on the lower number.
During the third week the count is again reduced by a third, and the smoker quits in the fourth week.
Change daily habits:
Change the daily schedule as much as possible. Eat at different times or eat many small meals instead of three large ones, sit in a different chair, rearrange the furniture.
Find other ways to close a meal. Play a tape or CD, eat a piece of fruit, get up and make a phone call, or take a walk (a good distraction that burns calories as well).
Substitute oral habits (eat celery, chew sugarless gum, suck on a cinnamon stick.) Go to public places and restaurants where smoking is prohibited or restricted.
Set short-term quitting goals and reward yourself when they are met, or every day put the money normally spent on cigarettes in a jar and buy something pleasurable at the end of a predetermined period of time.
Find activities that focus the hands and mind but are not taxing or fattening: computer games, solitaire, knitting, sewing, whittling, crossword puzzles.
Avoid heavy drinking of alcohol, caffeine, or other stimulants or mood altering substances.
Enjoy Life

The way I stopped smoking is to simply stop buying the cigarettes. Just don't do it, I even threw out my ashtrays and lighters. Now I only have matches around for candles if the electricity goes out; you never know, right? I will admit that my remaining nicotine free is a challenge, esepcially when I am around other smokers or someone who has recently smoked a cigarette. But then I think I have come this far, so I might as well stick to my guns about not smoking. What's the point in going back to physiologically, psychologically, and physically depending on cancer sticks, when they make me smell-bad? My hair use to stink, and my breath was like an ashtray. Yummy (sarcasm)! Who wants to kiss that? I'd rather stick my own foot in my mouth. Yet I say that now. The best advice I can give to convince you to stop killing yourself is to make the decision not to smoke, to stop buying cigarettes, to take it one day at a time, and to be able to wield the will to say no. Saying NO is hard, but you can do it. I have faith in you. If you need to destress after you've quit smoking, find a new habit, a good one, like going for walks. That helps me.

Pick a day to stop smoking and stick with it. Cold turkey is the best way because it's not expensive and it only takes 2-3 days for the nicotine to get out of your system. I don't agree with patches or other types of stop smoking treatments because your still pumping your system with nicotine . I quit smoking almost a month ago by cold turkey and I chew sugar free gum and snack on sugar-free hard candy when I have the urge to smoke, and it works, It also helps to drink a lot of water and fruit juices. I wish you luck with quiting, just remember to stick to your gun's when you decide to quit. If you need help quiting just Google "quit smoking" and you should find online support and methods to quit smoking. (which has help me a lot)

Good for you cassandralynn. Stick with it. I know I also drink lots of water, and have candy on me as well. It helps. Some call it addiction transfer, which is bull to remind ex-smokers of thier previous habit. For example, if non-smokers didn't smoke, and they liked candy, is it addiction trnasfer for them, too? See my point? Labels hurt. Anyway, I'd rather have my teeth rot and develop adult onset type II diabetes than kill what's left of the alveoli in my lungs. I smoked for 20 years. Ouch. My system is still trying to get rid of it. Speaking of, I know candy won't rot the teeth and cause diabetes for everyone, but I only use an extreme example to magnify what smoking can do to a person and h/is health. I've also noticed since I quit, that I have a need to talk more, so if you want to drop me an email, or just say hello, don't be shy!

Well, you could try to increase your awareness of the bad effects that smoking can bring to you. Try to reflect on the reason why you smoke and what can it do for you...

well after many years of trying, I eventually managed to stop smoking using a nicorette inhalator. This is simply a plastic cigarette with a nicotene replacement capsule in it. I have not had a cigarette now for almost 9 months
stick at it, im sure you can find a method that works for you

happyI will tell this to you my friend, and please open up your ears and your mind: It is so easy to give up smoking if you are really determined to stay healthy. I used to smoke 1 packet a day when I was 20 years old. After a year of being a smoker I gave it up because of severe asthma attack. I am happy that I was able to give smoking easily - in just a snap of a finger! I believe that you can't give up smoking slowly, little by little....no. That's not the way. You have to tell yourself that you will give it up, then, STOP smoking. It takes a really strong determination to do this. And stay away from people who smoke to resist temptation to smoke again. Then when you get used to it no matter how much they smoke infront of your face you can't be tempted anymore. Do this for yourself: STOP SMOKING and BE HEALTHY...it's one way of loving yourself too. happy

The best way I know of to stop yourself smoking is to keep reminding yourself of the danger you're putting yourself in by not stopping. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you the variety of diseases and illnesses that can come about as a result of smoking - just bare those in mind next time you find yourself reaching for a cigarette.

If you need visual aid, try searching Google for "tarred lung", "cancerous lung" and "emphysema".
