3. santuccie (1758) | 6 months ago | I have three machines at home. One is a P4 desktop running XP Home, another is a Celeron D desktop running XP Pro, and the other is an Athlon 64 X2 laptop (which I'm typing this from) running XP Pro. I don't like Vista, at least not in its present stage. XP took awhile to mature, but I don't remember people suing Microsoft because the OS couldn't run on hardware that bore its sticker. XP can run on a 300 MHz processor, yet the Pentium 4 was out before it ever hit the market. Some of the fastest hardware out there will still take awhile to load all Vista's drivers into RAM at boot time, and some people don't like to wait that long (myself included). I also secure Windows XP by locking down key system areas, preventing viruses and other malware from being able to access these areas and make changes. In the common case of a drive-by download, in which malware tries to execute on my machine as I visit a compromised Web page; the API is inaccessible, and the attack is foiled. The only active security software I run on any of my machines is Windows Firewall. I have no resident antivirus nor antispyware. This is one of the things that make Linux (and the Mac) so responsive, and my systems are exemplary of XP's similar performance capabilities. I also keep my hard drives defragmented, and always run WinDoctor after installing or uninstalling anything. This keeps my systems running stable. OS-X is pretty, as are the machines on which it comes preinstalled. But I'm into skinning the OS myself anyway, and the silver/black look on a lot of today's stock PCs is sexy enough for me. I don't like the way OS-X behaves, I can't stand the MightyMouse, and XP is faster. I also like being able to upgrade my hardware if I want to (and pay less for it). XP gets my vote. Cheers!

5. bradhart (550) | 6 months ago | There is no way in hell you would get me to purchase vista. It is worse of a screw up than windows me was. As for XP vs Mac. Macs are good machines slightly easier to use for somethings if you don't already know how to do it on windows. The down side to a Mac is the easy ability to build a machine from scratch for the exact configuration you want, and then there is software. Mac specific software is more expensive, harder to find, and there are less options to choose from.
