i just got a cat  email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 64/100. YorkieBear (980) 4 years ago

So, we kind of started to look for a cat the past few days.
The reason may not be a real good one, but it was the reason. About a month ago we started seeing traces of mice in our house. YUK!!! Those mice have done nothing but outsmart me over and over and over again. I have every kind of trap set and they go near them and leave me their droppings but, they never go in them. I told my husband that I was going to get a cat because I was tired of being outsmarted by mice, of all things. I started looking a few days ago. We have 5 dogs so, any cat we get would have to get along with dogs. Not sure how all the dogs will do with a cat because not only have they never been around one, I don't think they have even ever seen one. We went to many places yesterday, saw a few here and there. I originally was looking for a 6/7 month old cat as that is what people have told me I would be better of getting. When we were at the pound yesterday I came across a 3 year old female. I took her out and held her. Brought her near dog cages to see how she would react. She was great. I decided to adopt her but while doing the paperwork, the brought out the previous owners paperwork and it said NO DOGS!!!! After thinking about it and talking to two people that work there, I decided it was not fair to torture the cat and decided not to take her. When I woke up this morning I told my husband that I was going to take one of our dogs to the pound to see really just how the cat does around dogs and how one of our dogs does around a cat. They did great together. No hissing. No paw up in the air. No backing away. Seemed as if the cat could care a less if it was another cat, a dog or a humam. My dog did great too. Didn't try to go after the cat. Sniffed her and then proceeded to hen peck her with his nose like he does to all our other animals. (why he does this we have no idea....just a part of his personality I guess). So, I decided to take the cat. Another animal's life saved. It ended up that she was not spayed so we cannot bring her home until Tuesday after they spay her. (their rules) So, my question is....those of you that are familiar with cats, does it sound like this cat won't be bothered by dogs? Are 3 year old cats set in their ways that it will be hard for her to adjust in a house with 5 dogs? Did I do the right thing to see if the cat was okay around dogs? Does it sound to you like the dogs and cat will get around? And, what would be your recommendations on introducing the cat not only to her new home but, to all the dogs in the house? (just to let you know, I have 3 Yorkshire Terriers ages 4, 5 and 6, a Papillon that will be 1 years old in a few days and, a 86 pound part Labrador, part Chow and, part whatever else...she was an abused stray we found about 4 years ago that we took in and kept).

It sounds like the cat will do fine with the dogs. If she had no bad response to one, she should be ok with all of them.

I would start with letting her get used to the house first. If she is still loopy when you bring her home from the surgery, put her in a bedroom or quiet room by herself without alot of tall furniture.

I would then start letting her meet the dogs, one at a tme. Let them get to know her as well. I wouldn't leave everyone alone for awhile. And make sure no food bowls are involved. Animals get silly when food is involved.

Here's to a long happy life with all your babies!

Thanks for the advice. I really hope they get along. I would hate to have to bring her back to the pound. We decided that we would make my sons room her safe place so we are putting her liter box and food & water bowls in there. When I bring her home I will leave my dogs in their kennels until she has had a chance to roam the house and check it out and see where all her stuff is. I definitely will not leave them all alone for awhile. And, I will introduce one dog to her at a time. As for food bowls, I can never leave any of them down. My dogs are possessive over their food and I have a war on my hands if they all eat in the same room with all their bowls down together. I have had to resort to feeding them in their kennels (which by the way are huge) and I think they prefer it that way because no one bothers them or their food.

Hi and Congratulations on your new feline friend! I'm also very sorry to hear about your mouse problem. Yikes!
I think that was a pretty clever idea though. lol
I think you did the right thing bringing the dog to the shelter to introduce them. At least kitty will be familiar with your dogs scent so this could make the transition easier. I have 2 cats and plan on getting a dog one of these days. My one cat is about 6 years old so he is pretty set in his ways and I'm not sure how he would react to a dog at first. But I know after awhile they will get along or at least tolerate each other. I found this link for you that might be helpful..

http://www.barkleyandpaws...

It talks about how to introduce the new cat to your dogs and gives you some tips.

I think they will definitely get along eventually. At first it's a natural reaction for them to shy away from each other and hide or even become aggressive. Once they start to get used to each other though, there shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck!

myLot reputation of 64/100. YorkieBear (980)  4 years ago

Yikes is right about those mice. In 12 years we have never had them. To have now baffles me but, it baffles me more how they can be smarter then me, especially with all the different kinds of traps that I have set about the house. I have already decided to make my sons room her safe place. Her liter box and food and water bowls will be in his room. When I bring her home I will keep my dogs locked up and let her roam about the house to see what it is and also show her where her stuff is. Then I will iintroduce one dog to her at a time and giving her some time with each one of them. I don't expect a miracle the first day but, I do hope that they can all learn to live together and get along. It would break my heart to have to return her to the pound. And, thanks for that website. I went to it and read some. Saved it so I can go back to it when I have more time and read it all the way through.

Your situation is similar to my daughter's. She also decided to get a cat after discovering mouse droppings. She also has 5 dogs. Two of her dogs are brothers who are pit and lab mix. One of the dogs is part beagle, and the other two are a mixed breed.

She decided to get a kitten, and at first, the pit mix went after her,and my daughter yelled at him to stop. It seemed like he really wanted to kill the kitty. She saw that the kitten and dogs would need to be separated until they all got used to each other. My daughter had to keep the little kitty in her cage until the dogs got used to her. She let the kitty out whenever someone was around to supervise. For a couple of weeks, the pits would sniff around the cage, and would lick the kitty if she was close enough. She had absolutely no fear of the dogs. Soon, she was able to spend more time out of the cage, and she soon took over the house. She now rules the dogs. The funny thing is that she acts like a dog. When someone comes over, all the dogs come running to greet them, and the cat comes along too like it's part of the pack. She also drinks water out of their water dish with them. All the dogs tolerate her, but the pits love her. She likes to wrap her front paws around their throats and bite them on the face, and they just sit there and let her do it.

The cat has the run of the house now, along with the dogs. I still can't believe how good they're all getting along.

myLot reputation of 64/100. YorkieBear (980)  4 years ago

I talked to quite a few cat rescue places and they all recommended that because I have 5 dogs, it would be best to get a cat that was around 6 to 7 months old. I did contemplate a kitten but thought it would be too small. I was really looking for a cat that was 6 to 7 months old but, as my story tells, I came across this 3 year old cat and even though I backed out of the adoption the first day, something must have told me to go back the next day. She comes home tomorrow and I am keeping my fingers crossed that they all get along.

I don't know if all of your dogs will accept your new cat. Not all dogs are the same. But, it might be ok. I had 2 or my 3 cats before we ever got our dog and, the cats didn't like him at first. Now they coexist and even seem to sort of like one another but, only the one that was a kitten when we brought her into our home and introduced her to her much larger canine brother cuddles with him.

So, over the years everyone has grown to understand that there is nothing they can do about their living situation. Either they get along or they get along. I can't promise that that will happen with your dogs and your new cat.

First and foremost, keep your new cat in a room by herself for the first couple of days so she can get used to one of her many new surroundings. Then, let her explore her new world but, I would suggest introducing her to each of your dogs one by one. If you introduce them all together, one or 2 of them may not be so accepting right off the bat and if one or more of them gets riled up, they all will follow suit. So, you want them to make their own minds up about the new "intruder" on their own. Have one person control the cat and the other control the dog. If your dog is stressed and snaps, don't punish in a way that might cause hard feelings. Just use loud sharp tones of your voice. Because, you don't want your dog associating your new cat with hurtful punishments because resentment may build...yes...they feel that!

Treat the dogs if they behave in a civilized manner towards your new cat. Create a good feeling that your dogs will associate with treating your new cat kindly.

One thing you might do is pet your cat a lot in the first few days while you are keeping your cat confined to one room in the house. Then, with the cat's scent still on your hands, let your dogs smell your hands before you ever introduce them. Do this a couple of times a day for a few days so, when they do meet her, they are at least familiar with her smell. That may be helpful. They may then be more curious about the source of this smell that they have been smelling for a little while and less aggressive towards her.

Other than that, make sure she is healthy after her surgery before you introduce her to your dogs. She needs to be strong enough to get away quickly if she needs to.

And, talk to your vet to see if he or she has any introduction suggestions. No one knows animals better than animals like a vet or someone who works with them every day.

Good luck!

myLot reputation of 64/100. YorkieBear (980)  4 years ago

Thanks for the advice. Some of it I planned on already, other parts are very helpful and make perfect sense. She will be weak from her surgery when we bring her home tomorrow so maybe we are better off not introducing her to the dogs tomorrow but rather keep her in her safe room and go in there a lot to pet her and let the dogs get familiar with the smell. I was thinking though before we put her in the room and shut the door, that I would keep the dogs locked up and let her wander around the house first a little bit but, I guess I will see how she is when I pick her up before I decide that. I do have some papers that some of the cat rescue places gave me on how to introduce a new cat to dogs. I have even talked to many of them at great lengths and they have given me some advice as well.

myLot reputation of 96/100. cortjo73 (2353)   ranked 83 out of 5,815 in cats  4 years ago

My pleasure! I hope my advice will be really helpful.

I would suggest not to let her wander around the house right off the bat though because cats can be so skiddish when they are first brought to their new home. They are scared and overwhelmed and that is why experts will tell you to only give them one room to get used to at first. It helps ease them in instead of showing them this gigantic world that they have likely not seen much of since they have likely spent a lot of time in a cage. Do what you think is best but, it really is important that you make her feel safe and secure right off the bat. A new home on the first day is tramatic enough. They are really timid when they first get home. The tighter their surroundings, the easier their transition!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

When I got Gisi out of the Rescue Center 3 years ago we had 4 Cats
They where used to Dogs as we had a Labrador who we had to have put down because he had Cancer and was to old to have treatment, he was 13
So the Cats where not bothered I think Gissi was confused though lol
The older Cat Scruffy was putting him in his Place and they became the best of Friends
The Younger one Simba was smacking Gissi when my Back was turned and when I turned round he would look at me as if to say it wasn't me lol but all in all they got on great
Gissi thinks all Cats should play with him lol

My Yorkies are very curious things. I don't think they will bother her as much as they will pester her. Their curiosity always gets the better of them. My Papillon is still a puppy (well, she will be a year old in a few days) so she is still in the playful stage. My big dog, being abused when she was little - that is what concetrns me and she is the one that concerns me the most. I am sure them getting along nicely is not going to happen in one day. It is going to be something that I am going to have to work at.

It is so hard to pick just one too. It breaks my heart to go to the pound. This is only this 2nd time I have gone in the past 12 years. (really 3rd cause I went two days in a row) There were older cats there that I felt so sorry for. A lot of them were owner surrender and I just cannot understand how after that many years, an owner can just give up a pet. How confused, sad and lonely it must feel. I had 4 cats 13 years ago before I moved to where I live now. I had to get rid of them because they could not come with me. At the time I worked for a cat rescue place and tried to adopt them out. One of them I know went to a good home. Another one of them a co-worker took home and two of them went to the home of the owner. The co-worker one day just up and abandoned his place and left the cats. I was told that my cat went to another foster home and stayed there until she died. But, it still breaks my heart. She was a good cat and I wanted better for her. The other two that were at the owners house got out and were never found. Although it has been 12 years and I am sure they are no longer around, it breaks my heart to this day (believe it or not, I have tears in my eyes as I write this) because not knowing what happened to two of my babies breaks my heart. I took very good care of them and to imagine them on the streets, frightened, hungry and scared and wondering where I am, still hurts 13 years later. I still torment myself with the fact that I moved somewhere that I could not take them. I should have stayed there and taken care of them.

Hey Yorkie,

I know how it feels to live in a house with mice in it, and I know how it feels to live in a house where hte landlord didn't care the mice were infested and promised to get an exterminator and never did.

After he sold the property I got a cat, and loved that the mice problem was more under control...

As far as dogs and cats getting along, I have to say that I have seen them get along, they may have their moments where instincct kicks in, but I bet they will be fine together, each animal knows how to defend itself, and I be they will tease each other, and play together.

I hope it works out for you...

And I bet she will be such a loved addition to the family....

Mooch

myLot reputation of 64/100. YorkieBear (980)  4 years ago

We own our home so we are our landlords. I called many exterminators and they told me the only thing they could do for me was the same thing I was doing...set traps. They were surprised that my traps were not catching them. I have had cats and one dog together years and years ago but I always brought the cats in when they were kittens (except for one I tokk away from a girl that was throwing it against a wall) and I had the dog first. They got along great. I still have the traps up and haven't really seen any droppings in the past few days (I am going to jinx myself now) so maybe the deacon got to them. But, I am still bringing the cat home tomorrow and I really hope they get along because I do not want to take her back. (oh, the traps will come down tomorrow before I bring her home as I do not want her to get into any of them)

The other posters had some great ideas! To me, it's really the family raising the animals that effects whether or not they get along. It's all about slow introduction, and showing all furry animals in the family that they are equal. And that's not a bad reason at all to get a cat!!! I got my cat's for companionship, but they doubled as awesome bug and mice getters! LOL. My parent's have two cats, two dogs, and 9 ferrets, and they all get along AWESOME! It sounds like the cat will be fine with the dogs. Just give her a few days to adjust to the changes (I've found that keeping a cat in a small room, like a bathroom, the first few days and letting them come out of their on their own is best!) Good luck with your new feline friend!

myLot reputation of 64/100. YorkieBear (980)  4 years ago

Yes, they sure are great exterminators. When I had 4 cats I never saw a bug in my apartment, that is, except for the hind legs of crickets. For some reason they just did not like those. We have a safe room set up for her already - my sons room. He has a gate across his door already so the dogs stay out of there. Not sure if I will shut his door though so she can have peace for a few days or if I will leave it open so they can look at each other through the gate. Of course, the cat can jump over it if she chooses to, but if she does that, I will make sure that I am right there. Until I know they all get along okay, I do not want to take any chances.

First of all, introduce her to the dogs one at a time. Never all at once because dogs are aggresive in wanting to know what it is and so on and cats are passive animals that take their time in wanting to know each other and other animals so definetly introduce the dogs to the cat one at a time so the cat can get used to the idea of being around so many dogs at once. Keep your cat inside for 10 days to show it that this is it's new home. Then you could take her outside on a leash/harness so she can smell her way around and learn her surroundings and find her way back when such time she's let out freely. Always keep the dogs from over powering her because she is a cat and she'll be new to them and they to her. Also, since she's going to be spayed before you get her, be sure that none of the dogs go near her for the first week so her tummy can heal up properly. You could introduce them to her by you holding the dog(s) one by one but not have them in the same room until she's all healed up.
Good luck and many blessings to you for saving her life!!

That was one thing I was definitely going to do, introduce one dog to her at a time. My dogs are feisty and meeting all of them at one time can be way too much. Maybe before I put her in her safe room, I will take each dog out for a few minutes to see her and sniff her and let her see them and sniff them. I will also be able to get a reaction from each of them so I can kind of know what I am up against. As for being inside for 10 days, the cat will always be inside. I do not believe in outside cats. Two of my four cats before were inside cats and did just fine. In fact, they didn't want to be bothered with the outside.

It's great that you are adopting a cat although don't get your heart set on the cat getting rid of the mice. Not all cats go after mice and mice are pretty clever to detour the cat. I know cause I always get mice under my kitchen sink but nowhere else. Cats can't get under it and the mice know that. Tigger thinks they make great playmates. -rolls eyes and laughs- Anyways, cats and dogs CAN get along no matter the age difference. The ppl you got the cat from is the ppl you should of asked all your questions to cause they could help you alot in how to introduce the cat to your dogs. I'm sure they will all get along once they are used to each other. As for the the former owners says NO DOGS could very well be the cat harrasses them to no end, not the other way around. I have a dominate dog but a former cat and now Tigger just loved to pick on him. He won't go past Tigger if he's in the middle of the hallway cause he knows Tigger will swat him with a paw when he tries. They all get along for the most part thou. One thing is the pound will let you bring the cat back within a certain time frame if it doesn't work out.

myLot reputation of 64/100. YorkieBear (980)  4 years ago

Don't tell my husband that. I told him I was getting a cat because the traps were not working. I got the cat from the pound so they have very little information. It was an owner surrender but usually the little information they give is not true - they just want to get rid of it so make a good story so they can. Even though the form said "no dogs" and the pound called and asked what that meant and was told that the cat hisses and arches her back when she sees a dog, that was not the way it was when I took one of my dogs up there. They were nose to nose and she was not in the least bit affected by it. That is why I took my chances on her. If I could put my dog right in her face and it didn't phase her (she didn't hiss, swat, pull away or bat an eye), then that more or less told me that she was not afraid of them. They did tell me that I have 30 days to bring her back but, how can one take an animal out of a place like that and then bring it back? I just could not do that. I am keeping my fingers crossed that they all get along and tolerate each other.

Your right about the owners telling a bunch of lies to get rid of a pet. But they also do that in hopes the cat will find a new home b4 it's put down. We got a cat from the pound once but he didn't work out. I couldn't bear to take him back so I found him a new home. I called the guy a week later to see how Buddy was doing and the guy said he had already decided where he was sleeping at..on his pillow. lol Dom came from the pound as a puppy but the previous owners who abused him to no end didn't want to take him back but yet couldn't find a new home for him cause he was so mean. Took alot of begging and crying from my niece to take him in. He's a wonderful lap dog who just wants cuddling from anyone who will give it to him.
