is it safe to make your own antibiotics? Any other medicines you make?

Anyone ever done this? Penicillan can be made by growing mold on things like lemons & extracting the liquid, but then how is it made into a powdered capsule form? And would it be safe to do it? Obviously I'm not a pharmacist or a doctor or chemist...i am just wondering if it's possible to make your own medicine from home if you wanted to...Is it even legal to do that or do the corporations and FDA have it all under their control? I am curious about this because i hate going to the doctors :) so what natural home remedies or medicines have you tried to make or use? any that you swear by?

I do not think that this is a good idea. Scientist go to school for years to learn how to make these complicated medications that we take. I know that if could not be legal. Some of the ingredients are probably not even legal to posess. Not only that, with the strong side effects of some of these medicines I would imagine that some of them could be deadly if every stage of preparation is not followed to the letter. I would feel much more comfortable leaving it to the experts.

i definately agree i personally should not do it i am just wondering if it would be possible to learn...that would be interesting...i am not talking about making things like oxycotin or that kind of stuff...just trying to figure out how they make stuff like amoxicillan & other things that kill infection...or if there would be a substitute that could be used instead altogether...i am probably going to have to ask my med friends on this one :) unfortunately the best of them went to afghantistan voluntarily to help sick ppl over there :(

So, I hear eveyone elses response to you saying that it is not a good idea to make your own antibiotics. I understand where they are coming from, but I'm not convinced that it is unsafe yet, just because I or anyone else is ignorant to the process. I found this site because I was interested in the same thing-making antibiotics. I have not found anything yet, but if I do, I will let you know. I do not have medical insurance so I am always looking for herbal remedies to heal the body. One must be very wise before they go experimenting with medicine, either from the Eart or the pharmacy, but I say kepp looking; you might find your answer still.

I am not going to teach you how to make your own antibiotics purely out of personal ethics. However, I can tell you that it is not the serious danger or insanely complicated procedure you are being warned of. Please keep in mind the equipment and ingredients that were around when penicillin was discovered in 1928. In fact the first experimental batches were nothing more that samples of the mold itself diluted several hundred times in purified water. I would give you the straight answer here , but I think you should start reading up on what types there are and ;how they came to be. You should be able to find a good deal of information on how the process can be done simply. Start by researching the founder of penicillin Alexander Fleming. Good luck, and more power to amateur scientists!

As those before me have said it is not a good idea to try to make your own medicine. For one thing how do you know you are growing the right mold on the bread? Yes I believe it is illegal to make your own medicine at home for this reason. Raw honey and undistilled vinegar is good for a lot of different things. I give it to my grandson for sore throats. raw honey is good for upset stomachs. Look them up on the web and you will see what they are good for.

I don't think it would be wise to grow and consume your own penicillin. For one thing, you have no idea of its purity. Also, you have no idea how much you should take, or how often. There are safer home remedies. Garlic, for example. And various spices.

No you can't make your own penicillan. If you tried this method you stated here you would get very sick from it. Penicillan isn't just the mold, it is processed with other stuff. It wouldn't be a very smart thing to do. It wouldn't be very smart to try to make any of your own medicines. They just wouldn't work the way they should. I do know of some home remedies that work for certain things. For example, if you have heartburn just drink a couple tablespoons of vinegar and it is instantly gone, and I mean instantly. If you have bad gas and a stomach ache just drink some camila tea. It works to help relieve the gas.
