Well, we brought Klementine home yesterday. That is what the pound named her and, my kids decided they wanted to keep that name. We gave her a safe room and put her liter box and food and water dish in there. When we first brought her home, we kept the dogs in their kennels. She checked out her safe room and then ventured out to check out the bathroom and my daughters room. We brought her into the kitchen so she could check out more of the house if she wanted to. Well, she heard my dogs in their kennels just barking away and off she ran into her safe room. We gave her some time in there and, then one by one, I attempted to introduce her to my dogs. It did not work out very well. She hissed at each of them. We left her in her safe room, shut the door and went about our own way. I let my dogs out of their kennels and they did make a few trips over to the door of that room but, since they cannot get in, they left well enough alone. Later on, because they would not stop barking at each other, I kenneled them (they get time outs that way) and while they were in their kennels Klementine ventured out into the living room, the play room where she stared at my parakeets for a little while, the kitchen and the dining area. She jumped up onto a kitchen chair and just chilled. After she had been there for awhile I decided to take the dog that she had met at the pound out and hold him while she looked at him. Of course the dog was all excited. There was a new animal in the house and he wanted so badly to check her out. Klementine stared him down for a little while but I guess I must have got him to close because she hissed at him and jumped off the chair and went into her safe room. For the rest of the night she stayed in that room and the only time the dogs went to the door of that room was when any of us went in there to check on the cat and give her some attention. Oh, just as a note, we do have a gate on the door so we can either shut the door or keep it open. Either way the dogs cannot get into the room. She slept with my son on his bed all night. Boy, was he ecstatic. The dogs sleep with my daughter so it was neat for him to finally have an animal that liked his room and slept in there with him at night. We did make him shut his door so if she decided to venture out at night there would not be a dog and cat fight. This morning I tried again to introduce her back to the dog I had brought to the pound. She let him get a little closer then yesterday but it didn't take long for her to hiss and swat at him. It could have been that he was just overly excited and that made her nervous. Who knows. I am not expecting miracles in a day, or even two or three, etc. But I really want and need for them to get along. If they can't, then I am afraid I am not going to be able to keep her and, we really want to keep her. She seems to be content in my sons room but, I don't want her to be confined to just one room. That is not fair to an animal. I don't expect her and the dogs to be buddies with each other, just tolerate each other and get along. It is confusing why when her and one of my dogs were nose to nose with each other at the pound it didn't phase her in the least but, now, she hisses at him as well as all the others. I was thinking maybe because she just got spayed yesterday and then came to a new environment she is just nervous and needs time to settle in. Any suggestions? Anyone else ever bring a cat home to dogs that hissed and swatted? Did time eventually make it better to where it stopped and they could be in the same room together? Any input, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think that one thing to remember is that the process of acclimating a new cat has to be extremely gradual. My sister already had two big dogs when she took in a stray cat that she named Moochie. Moochie was not allowed in the house right away, but was given a bed, food and some water in the breeze way. Then once Moochie got used to being there and having the freedom of roaming in and out at will, she was bought into the house and given a place in my sister's spare room. Since Moochie liked to sit in the window, my sister put a little bed there for awhile. She also placed an open can of cat food nearby.

Then little by little, my sister introduced Moochie to the dogs. After what seemed like forever, the dogs got used to Moochie and one of the dogs stopped chasing her. Now everyone gets along. The dogs don't bother Moochie and seem to coexist nicely. One of the dogs, Chloe, even sleeps with Moochie once in a while.

All that makes sense and I will keep it all in mind. I know one of the biggest problems is that my 4 small dogs are yappers. You walk into the house, they bark. You let my big dog out of the room, they bark. Get four small dogs yapping at one time and it sure is a commotion. The cat is not an outdoor cat and, we are not going to let her go outdoors. We do have a doggy door and know that we have to watch it and the cat closely once she does accept the dogs and goes beyond the one room that she prefers right now. I know that I am probably rushing things but, I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the pound only gives you 30 days to exchange. Even though I don't want to give her up and it would break my heart to bring any animal back there, it wouldn't be fair to keep her if she just will
not or cannot tolerate dogs.

My sister wasn't sure if her dogs would coexist peacefully with Moochie. She was taking a chance. In the event that things did not work out between Moochie and the two dogs, my sister planned to bring Moochie to live with my three cats. I love cats, but jeez, my place is rather small. My Columbus and Waffles have monopolized my bedroom and my Mimi has monopolized the spare room.

Anyway, if things don't work out, try asking one of your friends or family members if they would like to take in the cat. Who knows? They might agree. At least you would know what happened to the cat.

I wish I knew someone here where I lived that would take her in. Everyone that I know either does not like cats or, has the max that we are allowed here. I am thinking positive though....she won't have to go back.

That's good. I'm sure that things will work out very well for you and your kitten. All best!:-)

We introduced 2 barn cats to a house with 3 dogs. It didn't take too long, and basically the cats rule the roost. They take care of themselves, and can defend themselves against the dogs. They hissed, and swatted the dogs, and the dogs learned to give them a wide berth. I also, like you gave them a safe place where they could go. I cut a small hole in the laundry room door where the cats can go and the dogs can't. Good Luck, I'm sure it will work out.

Like I said, 4 of my dogs are small (4 to 10 pounds) and they can squeeze into almost anything. I was considering having the cat declawed, that way if she did swat at one of them, she wouldn't cut their eyes or anything. She got me today when she swatted at the dog and, although I didn't even feel it, it was obvious she got me when my daughter said "is that blood running down your leg". I am not throwing in the towel yet...I know we still have some rough weeks ahead.

It sounds to me (and reading the others' responses) that she just needs time to settle in. As you say, it is quite a lot to take in - spaying, new environment, other animals and lots of humans (who have abadoned her before?)

Lots of love and affection. We're there for you! Well done for taking in a stray....

We're trying to decide whether we should take in a stray puppy but we may be going to the UK in a couple of months and I don't like the idea of taking on something so small and then having to leave it with other people in such a short time.... decisions, decisions...

myLot reputation of 63/100. YorkieBear (980)   ranked 262 out of 7,788 in cats  2 years ago

I could never leave my animals with someone else. Can you not take it with you to the UK?

myLot reputation of 35/100. wickedangel (1384)   ranked 7,520 out of 7,788 in cats  2 years ago

Unfortunately the UK's animal laws are some of the most stringent in the world. You have to have them vaccinated for everything and then they have to have passports to enter into the UK and if one thing is wrong then they are stuck in guaranteen for 6 months! We are only going for a couple of weeks....

Although we would really like to have this little stray puppy, we are thinking that it would be so unfair to take it now (only about 5 weeks old), look after it for 5-6 weeks and then go away for 2-3 weeks. The poor thing will become so disorientated and all the training that we will have given it will be lost by the time we got it back!

I think we will wait a little while and find another one. Although our hearts break as we so love animals...:(

My only advice is to be patient and don't force the issue and they'll get used to each other and Klementine will get used to her new surroundings in no time. They may not become "best buddies" but they'll tolerate each other at the very least. Right now it's a bit of a turf war going on, which is natural especially with a cat. It doesn't take a cat long to decide she wants to run the house!

I am being patient but, I will admit I might be pushing it a little. I want so bad for them to get along. She has started to come out of her room. She even came out today while I was outside but my daughter locked all the dogs up when she saw she had come out. I told her she should have just left them. She had to of seen them because they were sitting right there. Had she not wanted to come out, she wouldn't have. We also have started to put her in a carrier and bring her out for a little bit to watch TV with us. While she is in the carrier sitting on the couch with one of us, the dogs can look in her cage and they can check each other out. I was told this helps them to get to know each other. The cat feels safe cause she is in her carrier but, the dogs can also go and check her out. Today was the first time we did this. The dogs were so excited because they had never been that close to her before. They carried on like a bunch of banshee's. She did sit in the carrier growling and did hiss and swat a few times but I am told each time we do this, it will get better and better and better.
