Sure I am in the habit of keeping a notebook & a pen in the kitchen.Whenever any item is finished I note it down. Sometimes it does skip my mind, but whenever i go to the store I look around and find there are many items which I need to buy but they are not in my list. Now my first question is that do you make a shopping list, if yes then do you buy items from the store which are not in the list?

I do have habit of making a shopping list. Whenever I remember I need anything I note it down. Many times it happens I buy many items that are not in my list and forget to buy those on list!! ( that way I get another chance to go for shopping!!!)

Nope.. so when i shop, aside from remembering whats needed in the kitchen, i will walk to every corner of the store so I would know what are the things needed to buy by looking all the display racks. lol..

That also solves your purpose..you purchase whatever you run out without making list.

Yes, I make shopping lists. I have a magnetic list on my refrigerator to remind me to buy stuff. If I'm really being organized, I'll plan menus and make a list of what I need to get. Otherwise, I'll just make a list of paper products, cleaners, and two or three kinds of meat, fresh vegetables and pasta and hope I can make meals out of it all
. I always buy extra stuff at the store, usually things I want to add for meals, sale stuff I didn't remember to put down or if I'm lucky, marked for quick sale items.

I have to make a list or I will forget things. Just the other day I went to the store for 3 items. They would have cost me maybe $10.00. I end up spending $60.00 plus. This happens all the time.

I always carry a shopping list with me and if I run out of something (i.e. a spice) I write it down right away so that when I make my list I don't forget what I need. I do buy things off the list from time to time, but usually I stick to my list. If my husband does the shopping, he also makes a list, but he is less likely to stick to it. :)

My answer isn't all that different than some of the other answers that I've seen in this discussion. I sometimes have memory issues and I have to write everything down. I also have a magnetic memo pad on my refrigerator like someone else said that they do. As soon as I realize that I need something, I write it down, otherwise I'll forget. But, I rarely deviate from the list and it's usually only a couple of items that I have forgotten to put on the list in the first place.

I personally don't make shopping lists. I have a pretty good memory and rarely go to the store. But my mom, she's a total OC when it comes to these things. Every time she remembers that she needs something to do or buy, she directly writes it down either on a pad of paper or in her cellphone. Her reminder alarm goes off at least 5 times a day. It's a good thing I rarely am at home. Even when she makes a list, I think she still gets stuff that aren't on the list. Like food for me.

I actually keep a running shopping list within my cell phone. Since I always have my cell phone with me, I'm never without my list either. So whether I'm planning on going to the store or not, if I end up at the store, I'm prepared.

I also write note about what I should purchase so when I just go there at groceries or supermarkets, I will buy them as priority first, so that saves a lot of times (in case of forgetting) and I will not always purchase something I actually don't need.
usually I would spend more money on useless items if I didn't write the shopping list. so when I gave the priority towards things I wrote inside the note, I would realize that the basket was already full with things, and it stopped me from wasting more money on needless items.

I never bothered much with shopping lists before, but I've changed my tune in the last few months.
I don't write every single item down that we need if it's something I normally buy every trip to the store, but I do have a notepad on the refrigerator and I've been pretty good with writing things down as I think of them, or they're used up or whatever.
Some days I even remember to bring the list with me, how about that?

I make a list, yes. I do not keep a running list in the kitchen, but I intend to start doing so- I know it is a huge help! Yes, I usually buy things not on the list. Often, it is because I see something and remember I needed it...but sometimes it's stuff that is just added to the cart.
Today I went major grocery shopping...I had $40 worth of stuff in the cart before I even GOT to the grocery section (it's a super walmart) and all that was on my list for that side of the store was razors and a dish drainer (that I didn't even get because they didn't have one I liked.) Yikes! That's what I get for taking all the kids with me...lol. (Mom I need hair gel, mom I need a wastebasket, mom I need...mom...arrggh!!!)

I do tend to write a list. I note down things in the kitchen as they run out and then before I go shopping I add to the list anything extra that I need. I do tend to buy things that are not on the list when I go shopping, either because I remembered I needed it but forgot to add it on the list or because I am tempted by it!

Yes, a list is very nice to have. That way no matter who is going to the store at what time of day, they have a general idea of what to get. My idea of what is necessary, and my girlfriends may be totally different....this way we both know what is needed in the house. Any impulse buys abaove and beyond that are ok, but at least you have what you need.

I also have a "running" grocery list in my kitchen. I take it with me when I leave the house and return it when I get back, crossing off things that I have bought.
Today's list was:
Cornflakes
Gravy Mix
Sunflower Seeds
I bought them all and my list starts again....

I always make a shopping list for the things I need to buy. I make a list and add onto it as the time goes by before going to the grocery. I very seldom buy things from the store that are not on my list. I cannot afford to most of the time. I have to plan and put back money for those things.

Most of the time I do take a list with me to the grocery store. The funny thing about it is I don't have to look at the list to know what I need to buy. Now here is the strangest thing if I don't have a list on me I have to think and think to make sure I get all the things that I have need to buy. Such a strange thing to happen.
