Pork Barrel Spending Report just in. What do you think? |
|
Well the yearly report just came out on the stupid things our government spends OUR money on. Take a look at it http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/04/02/pork.spending/index.html
11.7 Billion, yep with a capital B. Anyone who does not thinks both sides are the problem really needs to read it.
"The Democrats were behind 5,199 projects worth $5.5 billion, while the Republicans earmarked 3,408 projects worth $4.4 billion, the citizen's group said. And in a sign bipartisanship is not dead, the two parties jointly backed 2,518 projects worth $3.8 billion" "To qualify for the Pig Book, a project must meet at least one of these standards: it was requested by only one chamber of Congress; was not specifically authorized; was not competitively awarded; was not requested by the president; greatly exceeded the president's budget request or the previous year's funding; was not the subject of congressional hearings; or served only a local or special interests" Which means wasted money. OUR wasted money. Yet for some reason we just sit back and keep taking it. Everyone hates Bush. Well I can understand that. But why not hate congress and senate too. They are just as bad as him (including two currently running for president). When will we DEMAND that our government start being responsible with the money we give them. And if they have PROVEN themselves to be untrustworthy with our money why do keep electing them back into office? Really at some point WE have to take responsibility for OUR actions. We vote them in, we let them get away with it. What do you think?

In other words it benefits the district the congressman represents. To them pork barrel spending is very beneficial. In fact alot of this spending is greatly needed in some areas. For example a few years ago West Virginia was in desperate need of roads and other infrastructure. West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, got alot of this infrastructure during his term. It is true that most of the pork barrel spending is a waste, but if you are in the area that it benefits you may have an entirely different outlook.

lilwonders123 (1252) | 2 years ago | If the state needed new roads then they should have used state taxes to cover it. Not federal money. States are responsible for their own budgets and should take care of thier own needs. Why should tax payers in California pay for roads in Virginia? It's all about accountablility! Also did you actual read what some of that money went to? Opera houses? Why should the federal government pay for opera houses? A few million on a Woodstock museaum (thanks Hilary)? This is naming a few of the stupid projects. With all the issues we have today we really need to be wasting money on some of this BS? It adds up. Its billions of wasted dollars.

bobmnu (2640) | 2 years ago | You must mean the State of Robert Byrd don't you? I have driven through the State of WV and all I say was Robert Byrd this and Robert Byrd that. There was a joke told on the radio that if a homeless person falls asleep on a park bench he will wake up the next morning with a sign saying this is the Robert Byrd memorial bench for the homeless.
I have followed the problems that Amtrack has had trying to get funding. I have heard that Senator Byrd will not let any funding for rail roads unless WV get the same amount. This drives up the cost for everyone and is a waste of resources.
If he has done that much for WV how come they are still such a poor state. Are you building too many Memorials?

A good example is a school district in the area that received a "special grant" from the local Congressman. most of the staff of the district have voted for him ever since he gave them the grant. Senator Byrd of West VA, keeps getting reelected because he keeps bringing in more money for the state. If the politicians feel so strongly about these projects let tehm give their own money for it and not mine.
