We are moving into a bigger house. Need your advice/experiences please. email this discussion to a friend?

Hi all. We are moving into a much bigger house the beginning of June. Our house now just consists of a living room, dining room, small kitchen, one bathroom and two tiny bedrooms. With no attic or basement.

The house we will be moving into has 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, eat-in kitchen, playroom, office, living room, dining room, and a full-sized basement and garage.

I feel like when we move into this house our house will be empty because we don't have enough furniture to fill all the rooms. Has anyone else had this problem? We don't have the money to go out and buy new furniture. How would you resolve this problem? Would you drive around and pick up furniture on the side of the road that other's are throwing out and maybe fix it up if possible. Would you go to yard sales or consignment shops, place want ads in the paper? Have you gone through this before and what did you do. Any advice or stories about your past experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for reading!

We always went to yard/garage sales, listened to the radio classifieds, used the freecycle website for our county, received used furniture from family & friends, and even picked up stuff off the side of the road that was in good condition.

Whenever we moved we didn't have the extra money to spend furnishing the house so we all got together and found other ways of doing it. The last time I moved I didn't have a lot of my stuff because we were moving slowly and my other half at the time took off with most of my stuff while I was busy setting things up back here. So I pretty much had to start all over from clothing, to beds, to even the washer and dryer. With everything I now have I have only paid $10 for one item and that was a twin bed for my son. Other than that I haven't paid for anything else until we moved again last summer. I even found a refrigerator for $20.

Now that the weather is warming up more and more people will be having yard/tag/garage sales. I will have to keep my eyes out for those and hopefully I can pick up some great barains.

Thanks for your post!

I have found some awesome items at consignment shops and garage sales - I don't know if I would be comfortable about picking up items off the side of the road - some antique stores and liquidation centres have reasonably priced items as well.

My one piece of advice is - Don't get carried away! Before you know it, you can actually acquire too much stuff and your bigger house will feel cluttered and small in no time!

Try bringing in an item or two at a time and live with it for awhile before bringing in the next item.

Consignment shops. Hadn't thought about that. I have to look around to see if there are any in our area. I'm sure there are I just haven't been paying attention.

Thanks for the idea!

I have been blessed with what I found on the side of the road. It was great stuff that people put of for others to take. When I move this time. I am going to free cycle.org to get what I can for free. There is no reason for me to go broke. When there are people willing to give me a hand. The money I would have bought furniture with. Will be put in my bank or in my fridge.

You're right. It's amazing what some people just put out on the side of the road. "One persons trash is another persons treausre." That quote is soooo true.

First of all, congratulations! How exciting to move into a bigger house. My husband and I just moved into a bigger house about 2 months ago as well. My first suggestion is don't rush to fill your new house with 'stuff.' Rather, enjoy the openness. Don't buy or otherwise obtain a bunch of stuff just to fill it. You probably have enough furniture to get by for a little while at least, from your previous residence. Take your time and find stuff you like and can get really great deals on.

That being said, once you have settled in your place and enjoyed the peace that not having a bunch of stuff brings, you can start to decide what style of stuff you want. Then, hit Craigslist, yard sales, and flea markets. Don't be afraid to haggle for the price YOU want to pay! If they won't work with you, walk away and keep enjoying the openness of your big house until you find exactly what you want, at a price you are comfortable with.

Hi chicospagal!

Thank you so much for your great advice. I think you're right. We should just enjoy the openess of our new house for a while. I'm sure over the summer we can hit up some yard sales, flea markets, etc and pick up some great deals.

Thanks again for posting!
