What would you do if you couldn't smell anymore, would that be a good or bad thing? My hubby while working when he was younger for his father cleaned windows in office buildings. They used ammonia to do this and his sense of smell eventually got burned up. He hasn't been able to smell since he was a teenager. I think he misses out on alot of things but he says it doesn't bother him. How would you feel about it if you could no longer smell?sad

I wouldn't like it at all. There are so many beautiful wonderful smells in this world. I would miss it terribly.

I think I'd miss it but not near as much if it were my sight, hearing, taste or touch.

Well taste would go along with smell. They say 90% of taste is being able to smell. You know when you get a bad cold and your nose plugs up completely? That's why you can't taste your food when your nose gets that plugged up. I hate it when I can't taste my food!

Actually I didn't know that but it does stand to reason when you see ppl hold their nose to take icky medicine. Thanks for letting me know.

You're both right, he doesn't have much in the way of tastebuds either. It's a shame at times. Cannot smell the perfume i wear or the shampoo in my hair.

That's too bad:( Hubby is real sensitive to the smell of womens perfume and too much of it sets off his allergies.

While I would probably hate having no sense of smell... because I wouldn't be able to smell flowers, or good food.... at the same time it might make me eat healthier, lol. I mean without the sense of smell you couldn't taste your food. I don't really like the taste of most "healthy" foods, so it wouldn't matter then what I ate. It wouldn't be tempting to get french fries or chocolate or ice cream... etc.

But it would definitely suck!

The only thing you don't miss is someone farting! lol He once brought his dog in from outside, it had been sprayed by a skunk and his mom freaked when she came home. He didn't know though. Wow....

Oh that's too funny! Of course if it happened to me I wouldn't think so though! LOL

I don't smell anything about ten months a year. My allergies or whatever has destroyed most of my sense of smell. When I go on prednisone for my asthma, I get to smell for about a month and then it goes away again. Do I miss it? Oh yes. When I get my smell back, I smell everything I can for that short time - laundry, flowers, food. I can't smell when something is burning, the air quality, my kids great kid smell, my perfume, my dog, my car. You get used to it, but I miss it.

That is so true, what a shame. I'm glad my allergies don't prevent me from smelling. The house would burn down and neither of us would know.

My daughter had a head injury when she was 16. That is one of her side effects. It bothers her a little, when it comes to food cooking, but it sure don't bother her when she gets around things that don't smell good.

myLot reputation of 94/100. scags2005 (1465)   ranked 312 out of 26,774 in people  7 months ago

Yes there are lots of icky smells too that he doesn't have to worry about. That is the good part of it. Sorry to hear of your child's accident, hope she is okay.

It would probably make me the happiest person in the world and I would be very skinny. They say that the majority of our taste buds come from smell. So if I can not smell it, there is nothing to entice me and I can skip it.
My sense of smell is overly keen and I am over weight. I figure, if I can not smell it, I will not want it, Hehehehe.

myLot reputation of 94/100. scags2005 (1465)   ranked 312 out of 26,774 in people  7 months ago

Yeah that is true. He doesn't eat much.

'Nothing is more memorable than a smell'
“They that smell least, smell best”. - Book of Proverbs (Bible)
Your hubby might not smell but he surely smells the best. If i no longer i had the sense of smell, i would smell everything good till the day i lost the sense of smell.

That'll be so terrible. Without the smelling, then we can't taste anything delicious. The smelling is one of the important factor to taste food. Without it, I can't taste anything delicious.
