'Britain' refers to Great Britain, which consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. London is the capitol of Britain. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have some (very limited) autonomy, as far as some local questions are concerned. But the whole thing is governed from London.

London is the capitol of England, Glasgow is the capitol of Scotland, Cardiff for Wales and (I think) Londonderry for Northen Ireland.

I think you will find that if you talk to any person in Britain who does not live in England, (so anybody in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) they will not be very happy with you if you say the live in England. The same goes for when you are in a foreign country, hear people talking English and ask if they are English. The Irish and Scottish will tell you in no uncertain terms that they are most definitely not English!
