Best Buys Return Policy....Is This Bogus Or What? |
|
Tonight my husband and I bought a digital camera at Best Buy and paid $283.00 in cash because at the present my husband and I do not have a bank account. It's an awesome camera! However, after we bought it we realized we wanted to get a cheaper camera because the expense of the camera we bought would leave us without being able to do much Monday for our anniversary because we have several bills to pay and things of that nature.
So, before we even got the camera home we decided to return it to the Best Buy where we had purchased it from and perhaps get a more cheaper digital camera. So, we go back to Best Buy and we brought it over to customer service in order to return it and we hand the cashier our reciept. She punches in all the necessary data and then she turns to us and informs us that they have a policy that if the a customer purchases something over $250.00 with cash, they have to wait 7-10 buisness days to recieve a check in the mail for the returned amount because they don't have that kind of money in the store. So, they were pretty much saying that I had to hand over the merchandise but I couldn't get my money back for about two weeks. Are you kidding me?
First of all, a half an hour before we had just gave them $283.00, so, how can they tell us, 20 minutes before they were getting ready to close, that they didn't have that amount in the store? Um....I don't think so! My husband pointed to the register where we checked out and told the cashier, "that register over there does." Of course she ignored that statement real quick.
Second, when we purchased it, the cashier who checked us out never mentioned this return policy at all. So, I mentioned that to the cashier who was trying to preform the return for us. She said that she would get the manager and perhaps she could override it for us. The manager comes along and she punches in some numbers and then informs us that there is no way that she could override it. So, I explain to her that the cashier that checked us out never even mentioned anything about this return policy and that if it's a policy then they should mention it because it's an important factor. She says, "well, it's on the back of the reciept."
Now, I don't know about you all but I never check the back of the reciept. Who in the world thinks to check the back of a reciept? I don't kniw anyone who does this. I just think that if they are going to reinforce this policy, then they need to inform people who are paying over $250.00 in cash for an item, that if they return it they will have to wait 7-10 buisness days for a check in the mail and that all the information has been printed on the back of the reciept. Am I wrong? I really don't think so...
I personally have an issue with the fact that they want me to leave my expensive item with them and go home with nothing but a reciept and wait for a check in the mail. That's just so bogus! I was so upset with them that if I didn't love their movie selection so much, I would never return to them pft...Thankfully, my husband and I worked it out to where we can keep the camera and have a nice time on our anniversary as well. It took some budgeting and manuevering but all is cool because we put our heads together and worked it out. Still, it just made me so mad, I swear! However, at least we got one awesome camera out of the deal . Still, I just think their policy is so bogus...
What do you all think about this policy? Do you think it's reasonable or do you think it's bogus?

1. Transdisc (18489) | 2 years ago | I do not think that that policy is reasonable at all, SassyKittyKat. I could see such a policy with items paid for by check, but certainly not with items paid for in cash. That's awful.
Happy Anniversary!

| 2. kasandra411 (71) | 2 years ago | That is bogus. You shouldn't have to wait for a return on something you just purchased. Luckily for me, my husband is a tech buff that takes forever to decide what he wants so in the end we are satisfied with what we purchased. I'd write a note to the corp and say something about at least hanging a sign saying no cash returns on items blah blah.

SassyKittyKat (748) | 2 years ago | That's not a bad idea, I just may do that. Thanks!
Actually, we took a while to pick out the camera because my husband and I are the same way, we want to make sure we are getting good quality but then after we left we decided that for now it was best to perhaps go with something cheaper and then get the more expensive one later but as you can see, we couldn't do that lol...
So, we are keeping the camera but it still made me mad but I think I may do what you suggested because I think people need to be warned about something like that before they make a purchase. I still think they shouldn't have to return an expensive item and walk out of the store with nothing but a small slip and wait 7-10 days for their money back. That's just not right in my opinion...

4. robsbrooklyngirl (3079) | 2 years ago | That is a rediculious policy to have. I have never heard of such a stupid policy. My husband usually always pays with his card, but sometimes we pay for things with cash & yes, we do shop at Best Buy from time to time. They don't have any signs up that warms you of this policy before hand which is really stupid if you ask me. Like you said, who looks at the back of their reciept? I know we have never done so, nor does anyone else I bet. If that had been me I would have been furious. I agree with what another fellow My Lotter said, you need to write Best Buy corp. & tell them that (A) it's a stupid policy & should be changed & (B) if they are not going to change such a stupid policy then they need to have a big sign by every register warning customers what happens if they pay with cash & then try to return that item. My husband & I had a lot of trouble exchanging an item we bought at Target once because we used a gift card & it was for an item that was over a hundred dollars. They wouldn't allow us to exchange it because we used a gift card. We didn't even want the money back we just wanted an even exchange, but they would not allow us to do so. It was for the exact same item(ours did not work) & they still refused is. We even asked to speak to the manager, but she wouldn't let us exchange it either. I was as furious with them as you are with Best Buy right now.

SassyKittyKat (748) | 2 years ago | Trust me, I was furious but I didn't think there was anything I could do at that point. However, I really do think that I'm going to write Best Buy and complain about it because it really is a bogus policy.
I can't believe they wouldn't let you exchange your item for one that works. So what, because you purchased it on a gift card you can't exchange it for one that actually worked? That's so wrong and if I were you I would have definitely wrote to the Target corporation about it and complained.

5. lordwarwizard (10430) | 2 years ago | Hmm... best buy seems a bit cheapskate then.
Though I assume that you will indeed get the money back in the end, it is still unreasonable to hold the money for that long. And to say it does not have enough cash (whether true or not) is not a good excuse at all.
I have not tried returning items before so I am not sure about the return policies but still, I think you should lodge a complaint with the authorities.

|
SassyKittyKat (748) | 2 years ago | I just feel that I should not have to hand over an item that was that expensive and walk away with nothing. They had the money in the store because we had just paid them with it like a half an hour before. It was just all bogus! I think I'm definitely going to complain to someone because the policy is crazy and at least if they are going to continue with it, they need to have a huge sign at the registers stating their return policy in regards paying with cash of over $250.00 or more.
Thanks for your responce, it's very much appreciated!

6. sid556 (10895) | 2 years ago | sounds like a crock to me. I paid well over 250.00 for my daughters camera at circuit city. when we got home, she discovered that it was not what she really wanted. I was relieved because when we went back, the one she really liked was quite a bit cheaper. We did not have a problem at all. I've only been to bestbuy once. Thanx for the heads up...doesn't sound like a great place to do business with.

sid556 (10895) | 2 years ago | Yes, I agree...they should warn people on that. It is a weird policy really and who would expect it? I'd be asking why they have such a policy. I've never heard of such a thing. Well at least you know not to shop there anymore.

7. oneandonemakesix (24038) | 2 years ago | I have to say that its not right if you paid cash for the item and if you have that big of a gripe I would contact corporate about it, and I think that there should be a way to return an item without having ot wait.
I'm glad it worked out in the end for you, as I know that juggling finances can be tricky, and glad it worked otu that you can keep the camera and do something or your anniversary...

SassyKittyKat (748) | 2 years ago | Thanks, I really am happy we were able to work it out in the end as well. I think I am going to contact the big guys on this one. Normally I wouldn't bother but they need either change the policy or put up signs at the register warning people of the policy before they make their purchase.
Thanks, I really appreciate it!

9. ladym33 (5692) | 2 years ago | Wow, that is rediculas. I would have been so angry. They can't just keep your money like that. I can't believe that is even legal. I think if that is their policy then they should have to pay you interest on the money they are withholding from you.
I also don't believe that they did not have that amount of money in store. That is such a lie. I know from working at retail that at the very first thing in the morning every register is given at least $50.00 to start the morning off. At the end of the day they should have more than enough in the registers to refund under $300. I could see if it was first thing in the morning, but you said it was before closing, and you knew you gave them that money just a little while before you returned.
That is so wrong it is not even funny. I am certain that this "policy" is in place to get people to take their stuff with them and not attempt to return it. The whole policy is very dis-honest to me, especially when they don't even inform you of that at check out.
I will definately think twice about purchasing anything expensive from Best Buy using cash.
I am glad you were still able to enjoy your anniversary.

|
SassyKittyKat (748) | 2 years ago | Exactly! It was like a half hour before they were closing and just a half an hour before or less we had purchased the camera. They had that money in the store. It did make me so mad.
What made it worse is when she handed me the camera she had the bag just letting it slightly hang from her fingers and far away from her, as if to say "too bad for you, now take your camera and leave", they didn't appologize, they didn't say have a goodnight, they didn't say anything. It was just a bad way to do business all around.
One thing I have noticed about Best Buy is that they have a lot of young teenagers working there and they girls that helped me were very young. In certain situations that doesn't really affect things but in this one it did. It was just wrong all around.
Thanks so much for your comment, I really appreciate it!

10. Elixiress (2729) | 2 years ago | I am in between. I think that you should have been informed when you were buying the item, but I do check the back of the receipt, but only if I am going to return it, so that part it not too unreasonable. The fact they don't have that money in store is kind of stupid, since you bought it that day.
| |
| |
|
|
SassyKittyKat (748) | 2 years ago | Well, you must be one of the few because everyone I know does not inspect the back of the reciept. Most reciepts have the store logo's printed on it and so, who thinks to check back there? Thanks!
| |
|
|
Elixiress (2729) | 2 years ago | Well I check the front first and if the information I want is not there then I check the back.
| |
|
|
lttlmischievious (111) | 2 years ago | In my opinion, I really believe that when the store was about to close, they did not want to stick around to do the necessary paperwork to do a refund. They could also have let you do an exchange and given you the difference back instead of the whole amount. Sounds like someone just wanted to get done and get out of there so they could go do whatever.
| |
|
|
Elixiress (2729) | 2 years ago | Or maybe it is written in the code of conduct and therefore they have to follow it, because some days they might not have that type of money in the till, so they have to cover their backs.
