He was a wonderful farm dog and a great companion to my two kids. Well he liked to go to the fields with my husband and one day he was with him and leaned against the back tailgate and it came open...it had a tricky latch and someone hadn't shut it right. So as my husband was going down the road he feel out! I was horrified as was my husband! I got him to the vet and he had a broken leg. They put this cast on him that said ouch, ouch ouch all over it...it looked pretty funny! So my poor dog couldn't get out to the trees to do his"business" very well and every time he got out there his poor leg would start hurting and he would start howling! My husband finally went out and brought him back in a radio flyer wagon that the kids had with a blanket in it. So here is this dog with a pink cast, sitting on an old velvet comforter, in a red kids wagon being pulled to and from the windbreak! I never got a picture of it but I can tell you it's one of the more memorable moments of my life. My dog looks for all the world like a skier with a broken leg....just cruising along in the wagon!

My experience did not have a happy ending as yours did. I had a Yorkshire Terrier puppy that I had just gotten for my birthday. She ran out the door to the side of our house and went under a car that my husband was working on. There was anti-freeze under the car and because we didn't know if she had licked any of it or not we decided to play it safe and take her to the emergency vet just to be sure. When my daughter and I got there they whisked her right out of my arms and ran her to the back. She was not lethargic or anything. She looked fine and normal. They told me it would take awhile so to go home and they would call me after the tests results came back. A feew hours later they called me and told me all the tests came back negative, that she had no anti-freeze in her system and I could come back and get her. As soon as I entered the door I heard a code stat so I had to wait because everyone was tied up with whatever the emergency was. When someone finally came to the front I learned that my puppy went into seizures. They had to hook her up to all kinds of IV's and I was therefore not allowed to take her home. She had to stay there over the weekend but I was allowed to go and visit her and take her into a private room and spend time with her. I had planned on picking her up on Monday and taking her to my own personal vet but early Monday morning I got a phone call that she died. I was devasted. (can you believe 6+ years later I still am as I am sitting her crying as I write this). I could not help but feel that the emergency vet killed her. That they over dosed her with whatever they had done to see if she had anti-freeze in her. I picked up her body at the emergency vet and took her to my own vet and had an autopsy done. The autopsy showed there was absolutely nothing wrong with her as to why she should have died. The charcoal that they give them as soon as they are brought in to clear out anti-freeze can be dangerous if given in too high a dose. I think they emergency vet went overboard and not only gave her too much but gave it to her without even knowing if she needed it. I believe they killed her. I fought with them for over a month on this but got nowhere with them. They would admit to nothing even though their papers showed exactly what they did. My precious little Bear was cremated and she sits in an urn on my fireplace.

Oh yorkie I am so sorry....I too understand the loss of a pet. We had to put our sweet Buster to sleep yesterday. He was 15 and had many benign tumors that were getting really invasive but until last week seemed to be doing ok. Then last Thursday he started to get in pain and by Friday he was bad enough that we took him to the Vet. They said it was a pinched nerve and gave him pain meds and muscle relaxants. He got much worse over the weekend and because my husband leaves on Tuesday we went back yesterday. I knew it was time to let him go but I wasn't wanting to do it myself. So we discussed it and it was so funny (funny weird, not funny ha ha) the men didn't want to say "We need to put him down" My strong husband and this wonderful Vet just sat there and wouldn't say anything. So I had to say lets do this and the look on their face! I think they thought they would see me fall apart but I didn't because Buster Boo was my friend and I didn't want him to cry anymore. I didn't want him to be sick anymore. I am sad today but I know he's running around somewhere and not hobbling anymore and he's happy. Thanks for listening and thanks for understanding....

I am so sorry to hear about Buster Boo. Believe it or not, it brought tears to my eyes. Hearing about the loss of a pet always touches a spot inside me that is for all animals. Here is a poem that I thought you might like.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks for responding Yorkie! I knew you being the great dog lover that you are; would totally understand...I appreciate this poem so much and thank everyone who sent it! I have a copy that the veterinarian sent me that I am going to frame and put with Busters' picture...I think it will give my family and me a great deal of comfort...Thanks again for your thoughtfulness!

That's so touching! I had a dog named Trouble who lived to the ripe old age of 17. He was a Peek-a-poo, a little black dog with some brown on his face and he was our baby. For a time when he was a puppy we made the mistake of letting him go outside to "go". One night while I was shooting darts in the ladies' league about 1/2 mile from my house (thank God!) I got a call that Trouble had been hit by a car. We rushed him to the vet who was kind enough to meet us there as it was about 9:30 PM. He put him on a gurney and put an I.V in him immediately and wheeled him in to the back and told us he'd call us in the morning. I was so scared, I thought for sure he was going t die! He was out cold when we first got him but started crying really bad about halfway to the vet. Anyway, it turned out he was just fine. Some of my friends who aren't quite as much of animal lovers as I am laughed at me when I told him we couldn't be sure if he'd suffered brain damage for a few days. He was a bit wobbly for a week or so and we had to watch him closely so he didn't get up on the furniture and fall off. I slept on the floor next to him and for a few days he wouldn't eat unless I fed him and he'd only eat what I was eating. No, I didn't eat dog food, he age toast and jelly! He was good as new in no time and, like I said, lived for many more years - and he never went out without being tied again!

Oh how scary for you...I know some people think I'm a weirdo for doing the things I do for my animals but I believe we are the caretakers of all animals on this planet and I take that very seriously. I cannot tell you how angry I get to hear of an abused animal or one that is neglected. They are my friends and I feel fortunate to be able to have them in my life! Thanks so much for the story about your little dog Trouble...I'll bet he was a pistol!
