How do you Teach Old timers Computer! |
| |
| The past three weeks, I have three old timers who bought new desktops and laptop. I helped them set it up and practically tried to teach them the basics of computers and I tell you, it has been quite frustrating! They are in their 70's and I was glad that their anxious and willing to update themselves with the new technology and having no prior knowledge can be daunting and a big challenge for them. Their minds are willing but their capacity to learn and their dexterity have become limited at their ripe old age. I have spent many hours teaching them and yet it seems that it doesn't sink in. I am frustrated as much as they are but what can you do to help if their mind fumbles and fingers trembles! In the end I recommended them to join basic computing classes for the oldies as I had enough repeating my garbage! | | Teaching old timers Computer! | | | | |

| | At least you know what I meant, we're willing to help but it gets frustrating when the time we put in didn't even make sense to them! Cheers! | | | |

| | Pretty much like the young ones I guest, like the pre-schoolers. Find things that would interest them, A game of chess, solitaire, word puzzle or paint. Simplify the interface, remove or hide things that they wont need. Use accessibility tools like voice recognition or text reader or magnifier. Easy to say, yes, but better than teaching somebody not interested at all and this do take time( a long long time). | | | | | | |

| | I have showed them the game programs and they tried that. I think the interest in learning computer function is there. They bought more than a thousand bucks worth of computer and subscribed to the internet and yet the simplest task of sending emails and surfing the net seems too difficult for them. One oldie, who is my mother-in-law's mate, called me just as I woke up in the morning and practically lambasting me about his computer. That he has bought a thousand dollar piece of junk that he can't even use etc. Mind you, I did not recommend nor drag him into buying a computer in the nearby shop! I have just given them favors and tried to teach and help them as much as I could and he sounded like it was my fault! Nevertheless, at the end of the day, he apologized. Thanks for dropping your 2 cents. Cheers! | | | |

| | He he he, I forget to mention that M-I-LM mornings. Well give it some more time and a truck load of patience. And if all else failed, do the samurai thing ... A good Sensei always know when to stop. | | | |

| | It always comes back to the same thing... You cannot teach someone who has no interest in learning. They might tell you that they want to learn... but their heart is not in it. Too difficult they think... Most people over 50... buy a computer while not realising that you have to learn how to use it. Many of them have never learned to program their video recorder. How do you expect them to learn about computers? The fact of the matter is that if you are going to buy a computer... you really need to treat it as a hobby and a strong desire to make it your hobby. Only then you will learn. And you can learn by yourself. All you need is to go to the shop and buy the book. That the way I did it. | | | | | | |

| | The two oldies were my mother-in-law and her mate bought two desk tops and the other one is the retired Pilot bought a laptop. I supposed they won't throw thousand bucks worth of computer and subscribed to internet service without the interest of learning how to use them. After I've setup and hooked them on the internet and shown them what they can do, they were awed. When it was their turn to do it,they found it ain't easy as they can't type fast enough nor manage the mouse. I said, just keep practicing! I've bookmarked sites for Computer 101 and some books to read and written step by step on how to operate it and yet everyday, they would call me in panic that the computer won't turn on, how to do this and that etc., Aaargghh! As I said, they are willing to learn but their brains, hands and fingers don't coordinate. I can see their frustrations and I try to help as much as I could and that's the only thing I could do and the rest is really up to them. What I am afraid of is to see those new computers just become decorative piece in their homes and learn that they've wasted that much money. G'day! | | | |
