How Old Is Old? |
|
When you think of an old movie, what criteria do you consider that makes you think of it as "old"? Is it a certain genre'? Is there a certain cut off date? Is it any movie that was made before you were born? Do you know of any children who think of a movie as so old and you think of it as not old at all. Can you give an example of this?

1. Kecia08 (451) | 3 months ago | I think of the late 80's, early 90's and before as old movies. Like The Breakfast Club, Home Alone, etc...plus all the black and white movies LOL!

Transdisc (12436) | 3 months ago | Were you alive when these movies of the late 1980's, early 1990's were released, Kecia08?

Kecia08 (451) | 3 months ago | I was born in 1984, so yes I was...the movies I am referring to are 15-20+ years old...the film industry and technology has improved so much since then, so yeah, those are old...

2. Irishfrndly65 (1518) | 3 months ago | There's my example, rotfl at kecia,;) I will show my age and tell you that I think of old movies as 1960 or older. kecia is a youngun I bet! Also all black and whites I consider as an old movie. OT: I remember talking to a young lady once and she was referring to a Queen song that had been used in a soundtrack on a teen movie. She was referring to it as that song from 'such and such' movie. She actually thought the song was FROM that movie. I laughed so hard and then..........felt OLD! LOL!

Transdisc (12436) | 3 months ago | Hello Irishfrndly65:) I have had similar experiences with songs that young whippersnappers hear and think are from some movie or they hear a remake of a song and think that it's never been done. Do you think of Steve Martin's movie, "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" or Speilburg's, "Schindler's List" as old movies since they are grey movies rather than color?

Irishfrndly65 (1518) | 3 months ago | LOL, ok you got me....you know OLD black and white movies! Sheesh, such a stickler for the rules!;)

| 3. skfd_82 (7) | 3 months ago | I think genere or the peroid of the movie will not be considered as old. I think what makes a movie old is in the style of making, execution and the plots used. For example SuperMan, the powers of super man were same but their execution and sytle in making are different and you call that old technique vs new technique not the movie old.

Transdisc (12436) | 3 months ago | I think that you make a good point about style of making a film, skfd_82. I guess that a lot of this has to do with technology. What say you? Welcome to myLot.:)

| skfd_82 (7) | 3 months ago | Thanks, Movies become old when they are not in viewers list. Even though they are made recently. I love moives made during 60's, 70's and 80's. Yes technology defines old ness of moive.

5. AmbiePam (10021) | 3 months ago | If most of the stars in the movie have died of old age or some disease one gets when older, then I would consider the movie old. Or if it is in black and white, I think most would consider that an old movie.

Transdisc (12436) | 3 months ago | Excellent point about the actors being dead, AmbiePam!!

whimsystoryteller (687) | 3 months ago | Recently, I watched a movie in which almost everyone in the film is now dead. That's a strange feeling when I can remember the actors when they were alive so well. It's somewhat unnerving to see a film in which almost all of the performers have died.

6. Adelida2233 (789) | 3 months ago | I consider anything not in theaters old. However I'm assuming you are talking about classic movies. I have several different classifications. There are the old movies that were really popular when I was a kid, like The Goonies, Jaws, Pretty in Pink, etc. I use the term old with these movies, and I guess they are getting to be old(as am I, since I'm the same age I guess). These are movies that I grew up with and still watch frequently. There are also the classic movies, such as Gone with the Wind and Wizard of Oz. Thse movies have been around for more than 1 generation, and are movies that anyone from any generation can enjoy. Call me crazy, but something tells me my grandmother wouldn't enjoy(or understand) Harold and Kumar at Guamtanamo Bay...

Transdisc (12436) | 3 months ago | I like how you differentiate between old movies and classic movies, Adelida2233. The discussion isn't limited to classic movies, however, and I appreciate you bringing up any film that is not currently showing in theaters as a possibility for 'old.'

8. drannhh (4432) | 3 months ago | For me old is a silent film. I prefer watching films in color, but many of the old black and white films had such genuine content that in watching one forgets they are not in color. When the personalities of the actors and messages of the film are true to life, the films do not seem old at all. However, I feel the same way when reading Shakespeare's plays. They are so alive after many centuries that once immersed I no longer realize that the language is different from what we speak today. When watching a live performance or film version of Shakespeare's work, however, I have difficulty following the language, as I can understand it when reading much better than when hearing it spoken. Once a student whom I had hitherto thought of as very wise for her years surprised me by announcing that she thought any book or movie that happened before she had been born was irrelevant to her, however, and I was truly shocked, not because of what she said but because it was she who said it. Sadly, I repeated to her that those who fail to learn the mistakes others have made in the past are destined to repeat them. Sadly, she did not heed me. One day I got a heart wrenching letter from her stating how much she wished she had listened. Alas it was too late. Age is relative, and now, I think, that young girl is older than me.

drannhh (4432) | 3 months ago | TomKite, I was able to read your comment in the e-mail notice but my family censorship setting turned it off here. For those it the same boat though, I'll reiterate that you basically stated that the more recent movies are so lacking in nice, clean depth that we are pretty much forced to watch the oldies if we want to view at all. That is certainly how hubby and I feel, and also that the too-fast action of the new films makes it impossible for them to be "thinking" entertainment. Honestly, sometimes I feel watching the newbies is like watching somebody throw a ball against the wall--boring.

9. mrgpk66 (751) | 3 months ago | Old to me is before I was Born like Psycho from 1960 & filmed in Black & White, I like the 1950's & Older as they are Classics. Silent Films are Great as they had to use Motion, Facial Expression, Scenery, Lighting etc.. That is What Made Charlie Chaplin a Genius, He did Everything so Well. Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., Close Encounters are Classics but not Old. The 1970's I Consider as a Great Decade of Movie making but not Old not New either. Maybe a Timeless Classic & the 1980s the same to as Lots of New Ideas in Movie Making. I Consider the 1980's till Now the Modern Era in Film Making.

10. someonesmom (1706) | 3 months ago | Hi Transdisc, The time period mentioned by your first respondent, is what I call dated. Age makes everything relative. When I think about it, I find most westerns old, specifically the black and white variety. I'm a big fan of the song 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence,' and I believe I've seen the movie once. I know Jimmy Stewart starred in it. Now, if I were to see it again, I'm sure I'd consider it old. As for my taste in music ... well, I've often fancied myself in a western, and I don't even know why. I think I belong in a bygone era. I have a whole list of old black and white movies that I 'used to' love, that are hardly ever shown now. I'd likely consider them old if I were to watch them, but hope I'd still enjoy them. Are you familiar with an oldie called 'Dangerous Crossing?' Haven't seen it in years. I also enjoy 'The Apartment' with Jack Lemmon and Shirley McClaine, 'Days of Wine and Roses,' also with Jack Lemmon, and Lee Remick. I'm sure I could think of a lot more too. Maybe I should dig up some of these soon. I once tried to get my daughter to watch E.T. I mean everyone loves the little guy ... right? Well, she absolutely hated it, and wondered why I was trying to get her to sit through an old movie like that.

Transdisc (12436) | 3 months ago | Wow, why didn't she like E.T., someonesmom? Was it too slow for her? When it was realeased I saw it in the theater and I loved it. Years later, I showed it to my children and I wasn't all that impressed. It was soooooooo slow. I love movies with Jack Lemmon in them. I enjoy all his movies and I do consider them to be old movies and I love them.
| |
|
|
someonesmom (1706) | 3 months ago | You've never seen E.T., D! Well, you should really do so one day, just so you can say you have. No pressure though. I too saw E.T. in the theatre, Transdisc, and I loved it too. Then when I sat down to watch it with my daughter (and I can't quite remember how old she was), I wasn't as impressed either. It seemed dated to me. I think the reason she didn't like it, is because of the outdated special effects, and so on. Things have really changed since then, and I'm sure she'd be even more opinionated now, if she were to watch it. I've always loved Jack Lemmon's films. He made so many great ones. Another one that comes to mind is 'Some Like It Hot,' which is a classic and an oldie at the same time. I always get a good laugh out of this one, no matter how many times I've seen it.
