Food crisis in the world.

George Bush made a preposterous comment yesterday. He with help from his aide Rice, have worked out a thesis that the rise of middle class income in India and China, has led to increase in greater consumption and therefor the crisis. Friends , I wish to know the collective wisdom of Mylot on this subject. The actual data may come, proving or disproving any theory, but what does the general folk say?

First off, Condoleeze Rice is NOT President Bush's "aide." She is the Secretary of State of the United States. She is the highest ranked cabinet member and 5th in line for the Presidency should something happen to the President. She is no mere "aide." Second, it makes sense. The more people who can afford to buy lots of food at once, the less there is for everyone else to buy. Also, it's supply and demand. Those folks can afford to pay more for food, which drives prices up. Which means the poorer folks cannot afford the new higher prices. Also, the middle class is not the ones out there farming. So, fewer farms. More cities for the middle class to live in. Fewer places producing the food that is needed in the newer larger places.

If George Bush is the President and Rice is Secretary of State, she is a kind of assistant to Bush. An assistant can be called "aide". Prosperity does not come at once. Lots of food is not purchased at once. The increase in demand relative to supply does raise prices, but it does not lead to crisis. Consideration for inflationary policies please. The land for farming has progressively been increasing and not decreased. There are more number of 'places ' producing food. Thanks for posting. Welcome for further insights.

No, an assistant gets coffee and hands papers to the boss. Secretary of State Rice does much more than this. It is insulting to refer to someone with her accomplishments and power as a mere "aide." Do you refer to the Secretary of Defense as an "aide" to the President? Or the Attorney General? Or the Secretary of the Treasury? She outranks them all. She is NO ONE's assistant. Of course, it takes time for a middle class to build up. This food crisis did not happen over night either. There have been food pressures for years. The media just suddenly noticed it, so now everyone is screaming for action. The US has also been providing food aid for years. While the UN sits on millions of dollars that is SUPPOSED to be going to help these food pressures.
