Why do you feel the need to argue about your religious beliefs? email this discussion to a friend?

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god3 months ago

I just got done with a discussion about beliefs. Specifically whether something I said was true or not and it occurred to me that people are always trying to show others what they believe and to try to change the person they are talking to. I am a Christian and I have always believed in a higher power even as a small child but I am amazed at how many people feel threatened by this. I am not trying to convert them. I mention that I am because I am proud of who I am. Somehow whenever I talk about it I seem to make others angry that are not Christians. Why is it that we feel so passionately about it but forget that others have the right to believe what they wish?

I am a Christian myself and have my beliefs but I am also very accepting of others and have friends in my life that range from agnostic to total athesist but I don't love them any less for it. Part of being a Christian is to understand others. I am not a 'Bible basher' as some like to label us but someone who has a very loving personal relationship with God through prayer. I have many friends on here who are non-Christians but I myself have never experienced this except for when I answered a question about my morals and I stated that I follow the 10 Commandments and someone said that only from 4 onwards would be applicable to most which i then agreed with so it was just a difference of opinion and misunderstanding really. Ellie,
I guess it just seems like everywhere I turn lately I run into the kind of person that wants to debate my religion.By that I mean they want to somehow prove my ideas wrong because I don't have "proof". I really don't mind an atheist but when they attack, even with words, it gets old. I wouldn't try to change them.I have always believed that you can't change someone until they are ready for it anyway. I just think that some people are trying too hard. Which makes me think like the saying"Me thinks you doth protest too hard" is applicable to this problem.

myLot reputation of 86/100. ellie333 (3751)   ranked 36 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

Hi Hornswaggled, this is where I'm quite the diplomat as I refuse to be drawn into it and tell them that I agree to disagree with them on this issue. I have my beliefs they have theirs and then there is no argument, if the protest loudly then I will say you obviously aren't listening as I said I agree to disagree ok very firmly and that usually shuts em up. LOL Ellie:D

That is a great way to handle it....I really am not into conversion on religious things so that might be just what to do! Thanks!

I only recently heard that term "bible basher" and, quite frankly, it makes no sense in the context in which it is used. Bible-thumper I get. But Bible-basher??? One who bashes the bible.. well that would be a non-christian, would it not?

:-/

Hi, no the meaning isn't literal it mean someone who rams there opinions about the Bible down peoples throat all the time, again not literally but one who talks incessantly about the Bible to others with no let up or room for discussion. Ellie:D

hi my friend I cant understand why these who do not believe in God are getting that annoyed about discussions like yours.
I mean its everyones own business what to believe and what not to. Its similar to other topics when I dont like them I have the freedom of choice to overlook that discussion and post in others which suit me better.

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

Your right Book. Which leads me to believe that maybe they are trying to convince themselves? I don't know. I just don't understand a person who attacks another's beliefs. I don't like a lot of things in this world but the only time I am on the offensive is when I defend others. I particularly detest Pedophiles and they would be someone I would verbally and physically attack if necessary. But as for an atheist's beliefs; I figure that they will meet their maker someday and I don't have to judge them. I will take care of my own sins thank you! So I guess I'm just surprised at them is all. Thanks for responding!

book1962;I absolute agree with your words.
I very often ignore discussions I don´t like.
A few times,I´ve been given my opinions, about believe or not believe.
And when I got a reply on it,most of the belivers think I´m sick,beacuse I´m a non-believer

myLot reputation of 97/100. book1962 (9184)   ranked 40 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

hi Garfield 1 so you are a non believer but we can be friends here in mylot anyways. The question whether there is a God or not, is one of the many people have in life its not the only one.But I dont think everything should center right around this one question. And the answer to it should clearly not eliminate the possibliity of friendships between people.

myLot reputation of 71/100. Garfield1 (1265)   ranked 337 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

I´ve seldom problems to be friendly with people.
But I´ve problems to be polite sometimes, when some believers begin to talk about how great some things are
Have a great Wednesday

hi Garfield I can assure you I am not one of them who will just go and strike someone dead with Bible Verses and my personal opinion on how to deal with certain situations in life. After all such behaviour was one of the reasons why I left the Baptist Church I went to after 13 years or so and have returned to the Catholic Church where I grew up and where I feel much more at ease.

I think part of the problem comes from the experiences others have had with the religion that is talked about. When getting into religious discussions, we need to make sure we are speaking about fact. If you are talking about a story in your bible, and someone else doesn't follow the bible, it's just another fairy tale to them. Facts, are what people want.

If you're talking about what you believe, sometimes others will believe the exact opposite. And although they may seem like they are offending you, sometimes people are trying to understand how something makes sense to you, is completely foreign to them.

Believing in one God, as a Christian, does that mean Christ, or the Father of Christ, and is your God a man or a woman, or both? This is where you might lose people, and rightly so. Man was supposed to be created in God's image, male and female, but so much has been done to make Mary look like a floozy, and men are great. In the bible, a woman gives her man another woman to bear children for him. Uhm, adultery is wrong, yet its okay in the bible because it is dishonorable for women to be barren?

Maybe if there weren't double standards, it would be a lot different.

Religion, God, was created by people. Our ideas and images of God, are different, even in the same religion.

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

So by the token that you have to have facts does that mean you don't believe in anything unless it stares you in the face? Religion is not based on fact as in we have a picture that proves it or a goblet that shows he drank it, it's Believing. That is what being a believer means. To see what is written and to believe that the one that wrote it had a knowledge and experience that we didn't. Sometimes that is a miracle. It defies odds, facts, the Truth...whatever that is. I also have to disagree with you on the point that the bible makes St Mary look like a floozy? Please explain. I guess maybe that would be because she was pregnant before marriage right? That's where belief comes in. To say that God was created by man is your belief, not mine. That doesn't mean I am trying to change you of this belief. I don't expect others to believe me or even understand but I do expect respect for my beliefs just as I respect your differences. I am not sure what you are talking about with the whole barren thing but if it's your belief in something in the bible then I will say that you have a right to think what you want.

Religion does seem to be a very heated issue with people. Frankly I couldn't care less what a person believes, but do get annoyed at people who try to cram their religion down people's throat with the attitude that only their beliefs are true and only they will go to heaven...like where does that leave the rest of us? I'm a real complexity here..I was baptized Catholic (my father was Methodist, my mother Catholic), I was confirmed Protestant (Episcolpalian). My great-grandmother, while Catholic was into Science of Mind and Unity, I've studied a smattering of Buddhism, Hinduism, etc...and while I haven't forsaken my Christian upbringing I decided some years ago to go the pagan/wiccan path..I joke saying I'm Born Again Pagan. It does amaze me, as I said when I come across those who belief is only they will go to heaven...even my mother told me that she grew up Catholic and that was their belief as well...others Christian based religions also feel that only by the Salvation through Jesus one can go to Heaven...I repeat where does that leave the rest of us? We too have our beliefs in going to a Heaven, or Paradise, or Summerlands or "otherworld" It is true as you point out that too many forget that we all have the right to believe in our own beliefs and no one I feel has the right to think only there way is the only way to believe

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

That reminds me of a joke that I heard a long time ago....seems this man was in a terrible car accident and died. The next thing he knew he was standing in a looong line waiting to get into Heaven. As he got closer to the gate he overheard the angels telling the people in front of him something.Inside was a long corodor that was filled with doors lining the hall. So when he got to the front the angel leaned in and whispered something. He said " Please be very quiet when you walk down this long hall".The guy being puzzled, asked "Why do I have to be quiet?" and the angel replied" You have to be quiet when you go by room
350!" He asked "Why" and the angel replied"Because it's the (insert church here)room and think they are the only ones here!"
I think that is what a lot of people think!
Thanks for replying Pye!

I honestly don't feel like I need to argue my religious beliefs. I talk to people when they question what I believe. I don't be preachy or anything. I am proud to be a Christian, but I am not going to argue with someone on whether or not what they believe or what I believe is right.

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

It's funny because for most people this isn't a problem but then you run into that one that thinks that somehow you need "facts" to support your beliefs. I don't think they get the whole idea of the word belief.

I'm not sure. It seems like you say the word Jesus or God and someone gets upset. However, if you read the Bible, it does talk about their being more nonbelievers as time goes on...I'm not trying to convert either, people should be able to talk freely. Maybe they misread due to not being able to tell if someone is being sarcastic or not when typing...

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

Maybe so. I just realized that when I was discussing this that they were trying awful hard to get their point across with long long paragraphs to my shorter ones and I think that really shows that they are trying too hard somehow; like they are trying to convince themselves as well as me.
Thanks for responding to my discussion!

I hate arguing my own belief as its mine and should
be respected as mine so why do I need to argue over
it? I do not want to convert someone else to my
belief and I do not want to be converted either.
I am a Christian you are a jew so what there is room
for both of us. I respect your belief, now you respect
my belief too. thus we stand together side byside and
worship at different altars.

I sure don't have to tell you I have no problem discussing ONE of the big taboo topics - politics - and I may even take a stab at trying to convert a person or two along the way, but I wouldn't touch religion with a ten foot pole! I don't mean I won't discuss religion at all but I'd never argue with someone about their beliefs or lack thereof. I'd also like to say that I disagree with those who aren't religious and claim that those who ARE are somehow less intelligent or educated. I think that's BS, pure and simple. I see no reason for anyone to get angry unless they're being treated in an abusive fashion by someone from either side of the issue. To me one's religious faith is a personal matter and it's everyone's own business what they believe or don't believe and whether they choose to talk about it or not. If they do choose to talk about it, fine, as long as they respect the beliefs of others who don't agree with them, and that goes for both sides of the coin.

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

I agree Annie,
I too am very passionate about things as you well know but I don't think anyone has the right to try to make me into something I'm not in regards to religion. I look at it from a Christian belief...You come into this world alone and you leave this world alone and it's what you do with the time in the middle that counts. I also think that you should stand on those beliefs because whenever you meet your "maker" you will be standing there; without your congregation, spouse or whatever and they won't be able to vouch for you or you actions. So be yourself and you will be alright!

I hear ya! I'm not sure but I think people react this way because they feel that believing in a higher power or the bible would threaten their lifestyle and then they would feel guilty and would have to change it. I think a lot of people choose not believe in God because that way they will have no one to answer to and nothing to feel consciencious about. They would rather just pretend like there is no higher power out there to control their lives but if they would only stop and use some common sense they would see it's not to control but to make their lives better, safer and more fulfilling and peaceful...

Don't let them get to you! I just take comfort in the fact that I know that there's a God that I am devoted to and love and that God knows, sees and realizes my devotion and appraciates and cares for me because of it. I try not to participate in religous discussions too much because I feel when it comes to this subject people can't be civil and open minded and they become like hateful animals instead. It's actually really sad to see human decency and fellow feeling go out the window on a subject that should bring those very things to the forefront....

myLot reputation of 80/100. hornswaggled (866)   ranked 11 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

I couldn't agree more! I would love it if the subject wouldn't cause such strife in the conversations. I wasn't even asking about this person's religion. I did a discussion on a miracle that happened in our family and asked if people believed...I should have known better than to think that I'd only get believers. I got one person who clearly wasn't and was argumentative about it. I finally just agreed to disagree. Thanks for responding!

myLot reputation of 57/100. SassyKittyKat (755)   ranked 355 out of 444 in god  3 months ago

Yeah, sometimes it's best to just agree to disagree because one thing I have found with people like this, they will never quit and they will keep up the argument because they are fighting for their way of life and to say they agree with you would threaten that and so, sometimes it's better just to let it go and leave it in the hands of a higher power to take care of. You're welcome, thanks for the great discussion thumbup
