My husband and I were putzing in the yard yesterday and took a break and sat on the porch steps when along came a little buddy to share our little break.

This butterfly was very small, not much bigger the tip of his finger and had cream and white spots on his black wings. He also had little orange ball thingies on his legs - I've never seen anything like it!

He hung around for a good while, even kept coming back when we'd put him down. One time he went clear across the yard and came back and landed on me again. I hope he has family in the area to help with pollination!

Do you have butterflies showing up in your area yet?

Ohhh how beautiful this little butterfly is. It must have really thought of you as friendly to land on you like that. I love flutterbyes..that's what I call them. I've never called them butterflies, but flutterbyes. You are extremely fortunate to have gotten such a wonderful shot of this little friend. I can't wait to get a camera for myself to find things in nature to take pictures of.

myLot reputation of 90/100. Ldyjarhead (5167)   ranked 21 out of 2,586 in gardening  2 years ago

I call them flutterbys a lot too!

It was really odd the way this guy hung around. He was on my husband's hand long enough for me to go get the camera, change the batteries and take several different photos. He would touch him to get his wings to open and everything. It was cool!

What a beautiful little butterfly. I love butterflies but don't remember having one stick around like this one did for you. You must have been wearing the right colors to attract him for so long. I'll bet those little balls are collected pollen that got stuck to it's legs .

myLot reputation of 90/100. Ldyjarhead (5167)   ranked 21 out of 2,586 in gardening  2 years ago

No, it's definitely not pollen, they are a part of his anatomy for sure. Really weird looking little things, though.

Wow. Black and white. I have never seen one like that.

We had butterflies and moths all over a few weeks ago. Then a cold snap came through and they went MIA. Now that the temps are warming up again I am sure they will come back out, I know my cat will enjoy that.

myLot reputation of 90/100. Ldyjarhead (5167)   ranked 21 out of 2,586 in gardening  2 years ago

Yes, it really was an odd, yet pretty combination. Some of the spots were white, some where barely off-white but you could tell the difference close up.

I wonder if he'll get bigger? I know some of the larger butterflies are similar color, but the wing shape doesn't really fit what I remember.

It really was neat that he not only landed on us, but he kept coming back even after we put him down!

We had them at the old house all the time. At the new house, the landscaping really doesn't have anything that attracts butterflies yet, but it's definitely in the plans.

myLot reputation of 90/100. Ldyjarhead (5167)   ranked 21 out of 2,586 in gardening  2 years ago

Oh yes, make sure you think of all the creatures when you plant. If you provide the food, they'll provide the beauty and pollination.

I'm hoping I get a lot more as more flowers start blooming. I'll need butterflies and bees to pollinate my few vegetables!

I have not seen any Butterflys yet, I have had a few lady bugs come for a visit though. I like lady bugs too. When I lived in the Buffalo Mn, the Monarchs(sp) would migrate right through my back yard. So once year the yard would be full of lovely Monarch butterflys all over the place. I looked forward to it every year. That sure was a pretty little friend you made. Nice photo!thumbup

myLot reputation of 90/100. Ldyjarhead (5167)   ranked 21 out of 2,586 in gardening  2 years ago

Ldy butterflies are just about my favorite thing in the world. Yes we have them coming out here in NC. Butterflies always remind me of our relationship with Christ we start out as something so ugly, he cocoons us in his love and when we are reborn, we come out as something beautiful. Didn't mean to start a sermon here, but that is the truth, and a beautiful thing to behold. Thank you for sharing your butterfly story with us, that is awesome, isn't it wonderful how some insects and animals just seem to sense the people they are safe around. Have a blessed day, and enjoy this beautiful Spring weather.

myLot reputation of 90/100. Ldyjarhead (5167)   ranked 21 out of 2,586 in gardening  2 years ago

You go ahead and preach, it's the truth!

I lived several places in NC too and yes, butterflies were abundant there.

my grandpa had a way with butterflies and they would
come and land on his arm. he was very gentle and I
think they knew it . these were those big orange and gold and black butteflies that came in swarms. really gorgeous creatures too I believe they are called monarchs.I think that
they do have some sort of attraction for certain people
I have not seen many butterflies here which is odd with
all the plants and blooming shrubs we have.

myLot reputation of 90/100. Ldyjarhead (5167)   ranked 21 out of 2,586 in gardening  2 years ago

Oh yes, I love the big monarchs. This was just a little guy and when I searched online (that I got paid for, by the way - see my profile!) I find that he is probably really a moth and not a butterfly at all!
