I Found $1,800 Today! |
| |
| While out for one of my daily bike rides today, I found $1,800.00 in the form of a Yorkshire terrier. I use the figure $1,800.00 because that's the average cost of a Yorkie. I was riding through a subdivision about four miles from where I parked my car, when this adorable dog started running after me. I stopped my bike at the side of the street and put the kickstand down. The dog ran right over to me, and into my arms. It seemed to me to be about six months old. The area in which I found it is a very nice subdivision of homes valued perhaps at $300,000.00 to $1M. Dog in arms I stopped at a home where the garage door was slightly raised. I asked the owner if the York looked familiar to him. "Nope," he said, "The folks across the street have two or three dogs, but that's not one of theirs." I thanked him and left. Remember that I'm on my BIKE with a dog in my arms, unable to shift, unable to use the brakes! I came upon a young girl, perhaps 13-15, walking home from school. I did a stupid thing, asking her if the dog looked familiar to her. She replied in the negative. The reason I said "stupid" is because I could have been a sex predator PRETENDING to have found the dog. Well, that wasn't enough: A young boy, perhaps 12, came biking toward me and I asked him if the dog looked familiar to HIM. He too, replied in the negative. After stopping at a half-dozen homes in the immediate area, I decided to take the doggie home and give it a good meal and some water. That meant riding back to my car, about four miles away. To anyone who rides a bike, you know it's not all that easy to ride a bike with gear shifts and brakes while holding a dog that might weigh in at about 5-6 pounds. As I headed toward my car, I mentally prepared what I would to when I got home: Call both local newspapers and place a FOUND ad, describing the dog. Then I would advertise it on Craig’s list. Then my new friend would get a good meal and some cool, refreshing water. Tomorrow I would call my vet to have the pooch checked out. Then I’d sit and wait for a call claiming ownership to come in. I planned to have a busy night and a busy day tomorrow. All this time this lovely, lovable dog was kissing me as we rode along. Well, long story shorter: About three miles into my ride to my car, and SUV stopped. I was in the process of giving the doggie a drink of my Fruit 20, the only thing I had with me. "Did you find that dog?" a woman in the back seat asked me. "I did," I replied, "and I've been asking everyone along the way back to my car if they recognized it. Nobody did." "Well," she replied, "This is the owner!" Turns out they had seen me near the area where I found "Missy," but they mistook "Missy" for another Yorkie. It belongs to a "preacher," according to the woman, and she said that in thinking it was the preacher's dog, she was hoping I'd take it in and keep it. According to her, the "preacher" abused his dog. When she realized that the dog she and her husband saw me carrying in my left arm (while kissing it on the way), they followed a logical path, and thanks ONLY to God, they found me. The woman got out of the SUB and gave me a kiss. As I returned "Missy" to her daddy, I thanked God. I know how I would have felt if my Foxy Lady had gone missing. I would have been hysterical! I asked "Missy's" daddy if he'd allow me to take a picture of them. He was so happy, I think he'd have given me $1,000.00 if I'd asked! The image is below this narrative. Double click to enlarge it. To end this narrative, Missy and her daddy are reunited. It's a happy ending for everyone, but most of all for me. I don't think I could have made the last mile or so to get to my car if they hadn't come along! Memo to self: A dog is TRULY man's best friend. Man's SECOND-BEST friend is the person who finds a dog and returns it to its owner! Yes, I DO live an exciting life! (C) 2008 RJScott | | Yorkshire Terrier, 'Missy' | | | | |

| | i congratulate you on trying to make sure that the dog is safe and not just leaving it alone in the street....although your concerns are valid (people might think you're a pedophile pretending to have found a dog), you still pursued to look for the owner of the dog....riding a bicycle with a dog in one arm is really a hard thing to do....and you're able to do it for a couple of miles or so..... be happy with the fact that you are able to reunite a "family"... | | | | | | |

| | After I got back to my car, I drove to the area in which I found the dog. I explained to several people in the neighborhood what had transpired, and that I was in NO WAY a predator. I asked them to remember my visit in the event I'd be visited by the police, giving them my name and address. I'm thrilled that 'Missy' and her daddy are reunited! | | | |

| | The man was so thrilled that he could not find words to express his thanks ... much, I suppose, as I would have been if my Foxy Lady had been lost and returned to me. | | | |

| | It wasn't a good deed, Irish. It was the only thing I was able to do. If my Foxy Lady had been lost, I would have been frantic. I did the only thing a pet lover COULD do. | | | |

| | Well. I commend you. What you did was a really good thing. I know pets are like part of the family to many people! I would hope that someone would be kind enough to do the same for me if I had lost a pet. It is awesome to know that there are still a few good people left in the world. These days it seems like all news is bad news. I believe, if you do something nice it will come back to you... and you deserve it!!! | | | | | | |

| | This is a Beautiful story. I had a similar experience , But I have always questioned ( even though I know it's wrong ) as to what happend to my pooch! He gets loose a lot. He's the Houdini of Beagles...... But he's also very timid. The people that found my puppy said that he came running up to them.....which just doesn't sound logical at all because he's afraid of strangers. He still was wearing his harnass when they gave him Back to me. They knew he belonged to someone. During the course of his stay w/ them.....he got really Fat , Because from what I understand....they Fed him a Lot Of pizza. Which Kindo' spoiled him ( I can't go past him with a fresh Pizza anymore ) I guess ....well actually I know it's wrong to doubt what they have told me....But I just can't help thinking why would he run up to a complete stranger. He would rather run the woods anyday? I am Grateful they returned him to Me. I am Thankful for that. And I know exactly how the Yorkie's Owner Felt when U returned Her Puppy. She'll remember that Moment for a very long time I can assure you of that! | | | | | | |

| | Missy, the Yorkie, is a dog the owners obviously love. Except for some burrs in her fur, she was nicely trimmed and she didn't have an ounce of fat on her. She was just the friendliest little thing. I was prepared to take her home and give her a dinner of rice and a bit of Beneful, knowing that a change in diet could cause the runs. The rice would have counteracted that. Agfarm, how long did those people have your dog? | | | |

| | Dear RJScott.......They had my little Roo for the entire Month of October in '05. Here's the One little thing that remains with me more than anything......The Family had a little 13 yr. old Daughter who completely fell in love with my Stinky puppy. She was Crying as She handed him over to me. I felt Bad for the Little girl........For many weeks I had Considered taking Roo Back to Her , I could tell she Genuinely Loved him. She asked me if I knew that he Skips with his Hind Feet when he's out Walking. But I also had My 4 yr. Old , for whom " Roo " was intended. It was just one of those stories that really tuggs at your HeartStrings. The More I think about it......These were really good people.......The Father didn't have to retun Roo at all. He could 'ave kept him for his little Daughter , But he gave us Back our little Buddy. | | | |

| | it was very nice of you that you tried and reunited missy and her 'daddy'. not a lot of people do this now a days.. either they would have left her unnoticed or taken her home.. she is very very adorable.(the pic s really cute). there is no way anyone could have left her unnoticed..they would have definitely taken her home.. you are indeed his second best friend.. | | | | | | |

| | I could never have left Missy roaming the streets risking getting hit by a car. I figured that I'd take her home, get the burrs out of her fur, give her a good meal and, if necessary, stay the night at my house while I tried to find the owners today. | | | |

| | That was the worst part of whole ordeal,Ldyjarhead. I had a beautiful puppy in my left arm. She was perfectly fine, and perfectly happy with her new-found friend, going on a bike ride. But me, that's another story. It was impossible to brake the bike. If I had tried, depending on which brake I applied, one of the wheels would have shifted and I would have risked losing control of the bike and risked the safety of both of us. So, as I approached stop signs, I had to just stop pedalling and drift to a stop, finalizing it by putting both feet firmly on the street. Restarting was another matter. I had to make sure Missy wouldn't wriggle out of my arm and "push" myself to a start before I could start pedalling. It was an adventure, but not one that I'd look forward to a second time. For Missy? Who knows? She might be hoping that I come by again today to take her for another "fun ride." | | | |

| | It's always nice to hear when people return other peoples animals. In San Antonio, I hear about dogs being stolen all the time (lots of pits here) and it's quite sad. Then there are all these shelters...its good to know this dog is with it's owner....who hopefully, doesn't abuse it... | | | | | | |

| | Pit, I have no doubt that Missy is greatly loved by her owner. Just seeing the look on his face as I passed her through the window of the SUV and into his arms told me of the great relief he was feeling. He couldn't even talk. His neighbors who drove him around the neighborhood looking for Missy did all the talking. The man was obviously very distraught. His neighbor (the wife) told me that his wife was not even aware that Missy was missing until they picked the gentleman up to ride with them. I can only imagine the thoughts that went through HER mind! | | | |

| | Nice pic there, Zed! You know, yesterday's adventure did a lot to make me feel worthwhile. I can't imagine the man getting his dog back could have been any happier than I was, giving Missy back. Yet, I know for a fact that if I had not been able to find the owner (or in this case, if the owner had not been able to find me), I would have been thrilled to make a home for Missy along with me and my Foxy Lady. | | | |
