Age discrimination in job search... |
|
My husband is job searching and has had several interviews that did not work out. He is 47, bald, with grey in his moustache. He feels like he is being discriminated against for his age. Has this happened to you? How did you deal with it? We've heard to delete old job listings from his resume (only list jobs that go back 10 or kess)and not list "16 years experience." Do you have any suggestions?

1. mnflower (920) | 3 months ago | I do not believe that he is being discriminated I am also 47 and I got hired the first time I applied for a job and my boyfriend is in his 40's also with 17 years experience he was hired same day he applied so I really don't think they are using his age or looks against him, I think he just needs to keep trying..Applications in minnesota are only kept 3 months the longest then you need to reapply and me myself I always call the company a day after I send in the application to remind them I am out here and still looking and if no call the 2nd day I appear on the door stop of the company to show them I am here and willing to work.

2. Jakesnake1978 (1156) | 3 months ago | I do not think this has ever happened to me before. Whenever I apply for a job, and have an interview. I was never asked questions about my age, birth, hair color, ect. It is against the law to discriminate. If you ever run into this type of problem again; being discriminated, just report it to whomever can handle this. Like to a personnel dept of a company or whatever. Or you can complain to the state or federal agency who handles this.

4. jonesy123 (957) | 3 months ago | I, too, think part of it is the economy being sluggish. I don't know what kind of job your husband is applying for. Some sectors are harder to get something right now. I don't think his age is the problem, unless they are looking for a newbie who obviously would start in a much lower wage/salary range. Anyhow, I would advice against deleting part of your job history from your resume. It opens you up to questions once you sit in an interview and are obviously too old for such a short job history. All they have to do is ask about jobs you might have had before the first one you listed. I don't even see the resume to be the problem. After all, he made it to the interview stage several times now. Maybe the problem is his interview personality. He might want to examine what was asked and what his answers were. What attitude did he exhibit. How enthusiastic did he show himself about the prospect of joining the company. Did he trash talk his previous company? Did he dress properly? Did he show the proper respect, even if he was interviewed by a 20 year old? Things like that can make or break the interview. Also, after the interview, he should send a thank you note in which he should stress what a good fit he is for the position and the company. After a week or so, if he hasn't heard anything, he should make a phone call about the status of his application. Even if they decided against him, it doesn't hurt to inquire what went wrong. Just ask for some good tips for the further job search.

5. kbkbooks (2196) | 3 months ago | I have experienced this myself and a friend of mine who was in her late 50s had the same experience. It's not easy to get a job when you're over thirty five, was our conclusion. Yes, only go back about 5 years or 5 jobs if he has had many jobs. Also I found out that experience doesn't count for much. I ran my own business and did all the administration myself for 15 years, including the business papers for the government and the income taxes and the payroll. When I went to get an office job after that I was told I was not qualified because I did not have a special degree in business. The job market is very competitive and extremely discriminatory, there is no question.

kbkbooks (2196) | 3 months ago | I think research shows there are people walking around with degrees and they have no jobs or they are flipping hamburgers. The economy just doesn't have work available, no matter how qualified you are. I think the most important letters after my name are kbkbooks, M.O.M. (Masters of motherhood).

6. jewel76 (1632) | 3 months ago | There is always discrimination in job hiring i think, wether the person is too young and unexperienced, or too old,or old looking, or even too fat..My mom has a complete secretarial course, and nobody will hire her cuz she's 54 yrs old, and they all want young, good looking, sexy girls in the office. Don't get me wrong, my mom is good looking and sexy, but she isn't young.

kbkbooks (2196) | 3 months ago | Hey jewel76, how goes it? Long time no discussion with you! (Hmm, grammatical problem much?) As, you know I am almost 48, so I was wondering how long ago your mother took her secretarial course. Things have changed so much over the years. When I first started working in offices in the 70s, I was typing on a manual typewriter and filing papers in a stainless steel cabinet in paper folders. I progressed right along with the rest of the world from that time up (I started office work with no formal training at 16). We used to talk on the phone and send paper memos. I even remember TELEX (ancestor of FAX). When we could talk from office to office on intercoms instead of sending inner office mail or email. I remember photocopiers in black and white with really bad quality. I remember mimeograph. As the industry grew I learned all the new stuff on my own or together along with co-workers. I am basically self taught on the computer, but if you can type and do things in alphabetical order, why not? I taught myself computer bookkeeping and accounting which was easy because I had manual training, and once you know the basics of manual bookkeeping you can really use any accounting software. When I was job hunting just before I became disabled I used to hate those ads that said you had to have knowledge and experience of a particular software to do the accounting for a particular job. That is such BS. One would think that growing WITH technology would have an advantage but the young whipper snappers who run business now don't know anything about experience. Book learning is not everything, but you can't tell them that.

jewel76 (1632) | 3 months ago | My mom took her secretarial course about 4-5 yrs ago, and could never find a job in that field. She used to spend days bringing cvs, and faxing applications, but nothing...she got discouraged and ended up starting her own little cleaning business. She only has a few customers, but at least it earns her more money than staying at home.

7. angelwhispers30 (1468) | 3 months ago | My partner is 35 years old and while he's never been discriminated against for his age, there was one company who told him they wouldn't hire him because he was 'overqualified." We took that to mean that they were looking for someone younger to fit the 'team image' that this company gives out. The sad thing is that many companies will discriminate against older prospective employees. My only advice is to keep trying. Somewhere out there is a job just waiting for your husband to fill it. I wish him the best of luck. Searching for a new job is stressful at the best of times.

8. Hatley (10043) | 3 months ago | I was laid off, the nastynice way of saying you are fired, because I was seventy nine even though I was physically able to do the work. as it was a county job in the library system I did not feel up to fighting this as age discrimination and also I had a nice little nest egg built up of retirement funds. But I do think there is age discrimination and it starts around forty five. but its against the law and you can callthem on it if they ask for age, hair color and physical descriptions as those are not needed. My suggestion is to look as good as you can and have outlined your experince very clearly. seems to me like they would be glad to get a man who is mature and stable.

9. drakesuyat (167) | 3 months ago | just tell him to keep looking for a job and i'm sure he'll immediately find one. he only proves that he is worth hiring the fact that even being 47, bald and having grey moustache, he never make himself a burden and find his ways to make a living. my dad at age 45 loses his job as a manager in a massage clinic. unable to get a managerial job, he applied as a massage therapist, save some money and then go into barbecue business. he just dont want failures to stop him. he always say: "just keep on going"
