The OLD MILK BOTTLE.  

I remember them.
So perhaps I´m a bit old too!
I also remember,in Sweden we could buy 3dl milk in a tetra pack

We never has a ice chest Hiccup.
We had a kerosene fridge.
We did not even have electricity until the 1960's.
But the milk in the glass bottles was real milk.
My aunty lived on a dairy farm and used to bring us fresh milk in buckets.
That was the best.
Mum used to make milkshakes and homemade ice cream with it.

That makes me old too then

I can rmember them. The milkman brought them to the doorstep and if it was a freezing night, before we got up the top had 'popped' because the milk froze and the iced milk burst the top.
I can also remember on cold winter days that the birds would break the tops with their beak trying to get some nourishment.

Those however were the GOOD old days

I'm old too hun and used to deliver the milk at the weekends when I used to have a milk round. I used to spend Saturdays and Sundays doing the round with the milkman and used to look after the horse too.

I used to get the cream from the top of the milk and put it into a glass jar with a good tight lid and then shake it, and shake it, and shake it for ages and ages, until I ended up with a tiny little lump of butter.

I remember the old glass bottle with the matel lids! But I wouldn't say I'm that old!! lol

I didn't like drinking it though with the cream but I did like drinking it ice cold in school when we had our 'milk break' and we had the tiniets straws ever to drink it through and we used to race to drink it!! Ah the memories!

I'm just a bit younger than you but I remember the glass bottles of milk with the paper lids. We didn't have an ice box but the fridge, when I remember it, was incredibly small compared to the newer ones and I remember helping my mom defrost it every few weeks. The milkman would leave our order at the door in the morning--butter, milk, cottage cheese, really good cheese, too. I think that stopped just before I went into kindergarten and we started getting our dairy stuff from the little grocery on the next block.

I had a discussion awhile back along these lines. I miss the old fashioned milkman. We were on a first sname basis with him as a kid. I loved hearing the glass bottle clinking against each other as he would walk up for the days delivery.

I don't remember when there was a real milkman, but i have several different shape bottles that i am told was used for that purpose(no lids,though)Some belonged to my daddy and i've found some here and there. I keep them because they remind me of stories my Granny and Daddy used to tell me. My Granny said they actully kept the milk in the well when she was a girl!

Wow. I am not old enough to remember these but I love hearing about things like this. It's nice to hear because it reminds you that there was a time before things were so complicated. There was a time before you thought about everything you put into your body and what it might have in it.

The wonderful thing about our summer home here in Northern California is that they do still sell the cream top milk in glass bottles. So instead of taking the bottles back for our deposit, I keep a few and take them to our winter home, where I pour the other milk into the bottles as soon as we get it home from the market. Although that doesn't take the place of real milk, it keeps the milk fresh longer and serves as a reminder that we will be getting real milk again soon.

I am not sure that skimmed milk is really slimming, because it upsets the balance of nature in ways that maybe the "experts" if today do not quite understand. In any case, I refuse to drink the stuff.
