My Father passed some 20years ago but in his later years he was doing Genealogy, and in trace of Family he got some good lead on our Family.

He always wanted me to do this, But I refused and said in time I will do it after his passing.

Well in the last 12 months I have started to follow up on Dad's work.

When you do this there are many place you look for family, Births, Marriages and Death is the starter for all.
But what you do is to follow up, police records, taxes paid, rates, election Rolls, lands owned, church and cemetery. and the list goes on.

I think I hit the Jack Pot as one might say, I Traced my Great, Great Grand parents, who. Landed in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania Australia).

They came out from Great Britain on the Ship EMU. in the 1841.

Now they lucky part here was they worked for Van Diemen's Land Company.

In their WEB site (VDL)I found two Letters my Great, Great Grand Mother had written, to her grand daughter,
These letters was full of all Family news and had Names, dates, places, marriages, deaths, births. So much she had in her letter.I never met her (due to years) But I know I would have loved her and her to me, Her record of the Family is the best thing I have.

Have you ever had luck like this with OLD LETTERS.

I haven't really been involved in our family research but I had an aunt who passed on a couple years ago and she did some extensive research. She found a computer program to organize it all and I now have a disc that I should have looked at by now but haven't. I'll do it this week, you've inspired me!

I'm so glad you got to read that letter. It's great to be able to read the words of someone who helped found your family. I do save all the letters I've received from my family and enjoy reading them sometimes, especially the ones from my grandma who's been gone for nearly 30 years now.

I have been involved with doing genealogy for a bunch of years now and enjoy it very much. In fact, I gave myself the day off today and was working with my daughter on that already this morning!

Wow, those letters are*such* a treasure for you. Wonderful! One word of advice... always confirm things you see at sites such as rootsweb.com and familysearch.org. I have gotten some awesome info from them, but many of the entries turn out to be unconfirmed and incorrect, too.

And don't forget to ask for family stories from the elders in your family still living. I've not done so much of that and then it became too late. sad

The Genealogy branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day saints has a great (free) family tree structure.
and they are always there to help yo, most Church branches have the Genealogy and research is free or a very small fee for print offs. and the other thing is H/Q will not allow any member of the church to be pushy (bible bash you)
If you are doing Gen' in their branch.
What I will do is to see what the program is and tell in the next few days, but you may need some one to walk you thru it, but this one is one of the best I have ever seen and its FREE,
If you like it maybe I could give you some pointers in how the program works, I have over 800 family members on my computer now and I know I still have more to do, Ive yet to do Moms family.

Oh, you are SO luck to have come across all of this information. I wish I was that lucky. I am running into dead ends with the one side of the family.
Are you going to post the site online for family and friends to see?
I use Tribalpages.com for my family tree.
I was able to hook up with someone that had members from my family into his tree. It was so interesting to get those names and such from someone else. I had dates that he didn't have and he had names that I didn't have.
My mom is the keeper of all. I wish I was that organized to be able to keep all of the family newsclippings.
I am in the process of typing them all out or even scanning them into my computer. I need to back it up all on disk also. I want to be able to pass all of this family history onto a family member when I pass. i would also like to make a book for my mom, in time, before she passes also. She is the only one I have left to get the history from.
She has contacted her brother about getting me a copy of what HIS wife has gotten together.
I would love to be able to goto the cemetaries and take pics of the tombstones to add into the book also. So much to do, so little money to do it all. When you don't have a paid membership, you can't get too far with record searches.
Another thing that makes it hard to track down a family member is when teh spelling of the name changed, many times over. Another problem that I have run into is that so many in the families have passed the first names down and it gets all confusing at times.

Are you going to get a copy of the letter to add to the family tree?

There are many sites that are FREE to use, and at this moment Im using one out of Tasmania,Australia. and I also use The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

But where I found the letters of my GGGrand Mother was with a company they worked for.(VDLco.

You might like to see this site and read who my family were.
http://www.easycms.com.au/?q=node/194
http://www.easycms.com.au/?q=node/190

Now the thing here was I was cheeky, I looked at 190 and 194, and said wait one there are more files here so i checked them out, 191,192,193,,,195 and so on I found more family. Williams is one of my family he was a Convic from Great Britain and sent to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) for life, he was 17y/o, how hard that must have been for him.

For those who have ore are interested in Tasmania, The Govenment site is (Free) and you need to take time here because it is massive.

Ill put this up for you and check Im right if not I will post them again OK.

There is a way to make the URL's shorter is through Tinyurl.com. Works great. You just cut and paste the first URL into the box and click and they give you the new URL, and it works great.
Thanks for the links.

No, I haven't and wish that I could do the geneology but I don't have that kind of time.. I do have a cousin who is into tracing the family history and she does give me the information, so that I can learn a bit of my family history.. It is a fascinating job, and it is a job, but you really get to know where you came from and get a sense of who you are and get to know some of your ancestors.. Good going for this great find for you..

I'm glad that your endeavor bore fruit. Come to think of it, it really required a lot of work. Tracing, analyzing and finally verifying but it is also a work worthwhile. Knowing one's roots is one of the best things in the world. You can be proud of your genealogy. I hope I could do the same someday.

My mum is trying to peice together some family history at the moment but isn't having much luck as far as I know as she is struggling to find where one of the relatives went as she didn't marry but had a long term girlfriend but she cannot remember the girls name....all very confusing and long winded when looking at old letters or ships maifests!

About 8 years ago, my uncle mailed all of my brothers and sisters a book of love letters written by my grandfather to my grandmother. They did not have a lot of dates in them but were full of information about them as people. I never met either of them as they died before I was born and so the letters did much to make me feel more connected to them and gave me stronger roots. As both were Irish and stuggled trying to get money together in order to purchase the A-1 dairy farm they eventually purchased in Vermont through working in the new auto industry and as help in a hotel, I learned to appreciate them a lot. I know now that my grandparents loved each other... That too me is better even then dates.

It does give you a good feelin of being and that you have onership of something.

I know how your family would feel with those letters,

Ive been lucky my 2 letters have been recorded in the Archives of Tasmania, For me like my GGGrand mother I am also leaving things, I have done two items for the Victorian (Australia)Libary, here in Melbourne.

My childrens's children and theirs will be able to see who we were, and thats good.
