I'm Mad at my Cat.....But it's not Her Fault! |
| |
| My husband and I were watching American Idol last night when I went to open the door to let my cat choo choo in. She comes in for the night, she is black and has a choric sickness which we give her antibiotics for. Anyhow I looked down on the ground and saw a dead bird. Now thats nothing new my cat does eat birds she is an outdoor cat during the day. But the thing is this was an indigo bunting, a pretty little bright blue song bird. It was migrating though and stopped by our feeders to eat with the female who is brown in color. We found her dead too the day before. Now it wasnt my cats fault, but such a pretty bird to be killed is so sad to me I started crying and my heart just dropped to the floor. My hubby and I were watching them all weekend because they were so different looking we never seen one before and knew it was just mirgrating through. I have to get that off my chest, I still feel bad about it. Now what do you think about this? Would you be upset with your cat, would have you done anything different like keep the cat in when you saw the birds? Are cats colorblind? Not that it matters a bird is a bird to them, am I right?Diane | | Indigo Bunting | | | | |

| | Hi Dianel, I am sorry to hear your cat killed that bird. As you said thats what cats unfortunately do. We dont have a cat but it would go crazy now with what is going on on our balcony. The sparrows and blackbirds and finches enjoy some good out there and mess up that place and if we had a cat it would sure be banned from the balcony now as we want to feed our feathered friends, too. | | | | | | |

| | That is the one thing I don't like about cats. I have had cats for years and had many 'gifts' left for me - somehow they all learn that I really don't like these gifts and stop leaving them thankfully - I am not saying they stop killing but they stop bringing them to me! I can understand why you were upset but you are right - your cat didn't know the difference, she was just following her instincts and didn't know the difference. I wouldn't have kept the cat in - these birds are wildlife and really need to defend themselves from predators in the air as well as on the ground - perhaps your cat only got them as these ones were sick or weakened - they may not have made it to where they were going anyway! xxx | | | | | | |

| | It is in a cats nature I'm afraid and like you say a bird is a bird to them. I wouldn't be too angry with the cat as they are only following their instincts. I am amazed that Tweety Pie is still alive! LOL. It is sad but is is natural so let it be and give choo choo all the love and hugs you usually would. Ellie :D | | | | | | |

| | We are ellie. Its just really upsetting to see a pretty bird laying there dead and half eaten. It breaks your heart. Like I said to my hubby who is really having a hard time getting over it, that to her its just like any other bird she doesnt know any better. And he sure likes when she kills the baby rabbits and mice and chipmunks. lol. | | | |

| | Cats have more color vision than dogs, they probably seen into the reds and not the blues. So, this bird would probably just look black or grey to her. I don't let most of my cats outside, but sometimes a rat or mouse have gotten into their playpen and, I'm happy to say, they have dispatched them. | | | | | | |

| | dianel that is so sad as they are beautiful birds. I guess cats are really prone to killing birds if they are loose like that. It really is unfortunate but what can one do? Maybe keep your cats inside? I do no really know what is the best answer there. but you really cannot get upset with your cat as that is a natural instinct. | | | | | | |

| | Hello dianel. Im so sorry that you've witnessed two birds that were killed. My cats too likes killing birds. It really breaks my heart whenever they do that. Killing such an innocent little bird. I do get mad at my cats whenever they do that. They can kill a rat but definitely not a bird. I dont think cats are colorblind. They just assumed it was a bird and killed it. | | | | | | |

| | hey Diane, I would have cried to and you are right it was such a beautiful bird, and my cat sits there and bats at the windows and screens when the birds are out in the yard, and I don't let her out. I would probably be mad too at my cat if she did that, however, I know hunting is in a cats nature and that birds, bunnies and chipmunks are on their list of things they like to hunt... As far as cats being color blind, I believe they are partially color blind. But you are right a bird is a bird is a birs... Maybe you will see a couple more of these next year and you can keep your cat away from them Mooch | | | | | | |

| | As far as the cat is concern... anything which moves is fair game. They don't have a preference for birds. Birds are actually the hardest things to catch for a cat. I would not be upset with the cat. But if you knew that there was a possible danger to the birds... you should have kept the cat inside. That is if you care about the birds. Cats works on their natural instincts... and they don't recognise our artificial laws which differentiate between right and wrong. As far as the cat is concern... there is life and death. But no right or wrong. | | | | | | |
