They just left her there to die.........How do you forget your Mom? email this discussion to a friend?

I have a story to tell...

I live in a very small town and this person that I know had a mother that was in poor shape health wise. She was not eating right and the doctor said she should be in a nursing home but the family assured him that she would be fine.
So they said they would check on "mom" everyday by calling or going to see her. You know,to make sure she was taking her meds and getting some food, that kind of thing.
Well one day a few months ago, this woman's granddaughter went to see grandma with a friend of hers and they found her laying on the floor. From the looks of it she had been there for at least three days. It was a mess...blood and other body fluids everywhere, she was unconscious and barely breathing.
She lived for two days.
How does a person not check on their invalid mother? How do you reconcile that this life you are living is more important than seeing that the person that made you is doing ok?
I just can't seem to fathom this whole thing; to get my head wrapped around this!
I lost my mom when I was young but I cared for my grandma and my in laws until they died. In fact I was there for my in laws right till they took their last breath! So I guess I just don't understand how someone thinks that anything is more important than caring for your mom.

Well there is absollutly no excuse for this,These people should be charged with elderly abuse. Someone should have been staying with this woman, or at least checking on her each day, calling her and so forth. Why did they not place her in the nursing home s the doctor said.were they getting her checks or something? This is very terriable.

Isn't it though? I can't even imagine doing this to my worst enemy let alone my mom. I think this family is a little off if you know what I mean. They are all quite selfish except for the two sons and I think they thought things were ok. They live out of state, I believe, and probably thought it was taken care of.
The two girls however are a mess....it's just so sad!

I am the type of person who does not understand this type of neglect no easier then I can understand a mother hurting her baby...People get so caught up with their own life and turn very selfish...I took care of my grandmother who raised me until her last breath and have took care of other memebers of my family...How could anyone just neglect their own mother the woman who raised them is beyond me...It is sad...Just so sad...

It really is....I get really angry when I think of it but what's a person to do? I didn't know these people as well as some...although in a small town you would have thought someone else would have noticed something wasn't right...

If they wanted to save on the nursing home costs, they should have at least have one person move in with her. This is inexcusable. If the doctor recommended a nursing home, she was in no shape or form able to take care of herself.

This is inexcusable. Did anybody get charged with anything?

I don't know..maybe this woman refused but that didn't stop my husband and me from putting his parents in when it was time. It's never easy to do this but sometimes it has to be done. I would have like to have had them at the house but we only had a bath upstairs and that wouldn't work for them. I guess some people are just so narcissistic that they think of only themselves.

My mother was, to put it mildly a very difficult person to deal with especially the last year or so of her life...she was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and she made it quite clear (and rather vocal) that she didn't want to go to a nursing home/rehab to get her nutrition built up and to get her chemo/radiation there...so she stayed home. She also adamantly refused any visiting nurse kind of arrangements...what was in her favor however, was the fact that I was still living with her until her dying day and was her caregiver...I became an instant round the clock nurse to her. And while we didn't get along (to put it mildly) at least I WAS there for her, took care of her, made sure she went to her doc appts. and took her meds. I too was in the hospital with her the day she "crashed"

As for the people who neglected their mother and left her lying there and looked like she had been lying on the floor for about two or three days? There actually is no excuse for not taking care of another human being. If anything, they should have at least made arrangements with neighbors to check in on her when they couldn't or wouldn't. Well what goes around comes around...maybe one day, they too will be in the exact same situation and left neglected like they neglected their mother

I think that some people are so awful that I imagine their kids will follow in their footsteps....isn't that terrible?

Oh that is just so awful, Thank God for the granddaughter going to visit but even then it was too late really. I really hope that these people can live with themselves for being so cruel. Ooooh this annoys me, how can they have been so callous. probably wanting her too to get their inheritance, obviously selfish monetary people rather than loving and caring. Poor woman to be left there like that. Ellie:D

Oh my, oh my!! That's really bad and I feel so sad just reading it. How could the person had the heart to do that...? Is that person a he or a she..? Doesn't she believe in the word what goes around come around? And does the person think that he or she won't have children someday and what if he/she is to be left to die like that.

I feel so sad right now. Mothers should be appreciated and even so because Mother's Day has passed and I just couldn't imagine the same thing happening to my mom. I would always cherish and will never neglect her. Moms are for forever keeps.

You are such a good person to take care of your love ones till their last breath. Such kindness of a heart, my friend. thumbup

I think that the person I mentioned(a woman ) is now feeling some remorse; someone told me she hasn't done very well since her mom died. But it just amazes me that it would have to get to that point before you FEEL remorse! I mean really....how awful does it have to get to think...oh gee maybe I had better check on mom.

It really is and like I said to Zed the one daughter is starting to feel some remorse but I can't really have a good Christian thought for her right now. I know she didn't get on with her mom and when her parents divorced the mom left but that is beside the point!
I really didn't get on with my in laws but I was there because it's the RIGHT thing to do!
I think people have lost their ever living minds....

This story is so heartbreaking hw.
I had to take care of my mother when she was sick, and i tried my best to make sure all of her needs were meet.
I can't understand why they didn't put her in a nursing home where she would have been properly looked after. In my country it's not uncommon to have your elders taken care of by family members. And i just can't see how anyone could just neglect their loved ones this way.I could not imagine what this lady went through for those few days, hurt and alone, this must have been a horrible experience for her.My mom was a very important part of my life and the love i had and still have for her is unending.I would have done anything for my mom.

I know...I didn't know this older woman very well but I had nightmares for days when I heard about it. I just can't imagine how scared she was and alone....I get upset just thinking of anyone dying alone or waiting for someone to help them....I don't think I will ever forget this story ...

hello hornswaggled,
that is so horrible, it breaks my heart to hear such story.
it reminds me of our landlady when i was a kid, she is very strict but we cared her as if she is our own grandma.
on her last days, she just cry a lot with my mom and says how sorry she is for treating us wrong and how she remembers us despite her Alzheimer's and NOW i read this and it all brings back such a sad story coz she was treated really bad.
anyway, i have the same feeling as you do wondering how can they do such thing. are they too far to visit her? if they dont want to place her in a nursing home then take care of her in their own home.
i wish she is my neighbor, so i can at least help her somehow.
i wish the late mom's kids will never experience such thing when they reach their old age.
too sad.
at least grandma is resting now, no need for her to worry and be sad at night.
takecare!

I thank you fro writing Jgirl...I know that you said you are taking care of an elderly person so I know you understand this situation. I am so sorry for this woman but am glad she is out of misery and away from her horrible daughters.

my sentiments exactly, i just wish it is a nice end but at least now she is resting and hope no one will ever feel like this anymore but that is more of a wishful thinking after reading some other post who have the same story.
takecare and good night!

After my first hubs and I divorced I got word that his mother was ill and in the hospital. I took my kids down to see her and say good bye. A few days later the hospital called me again and said that they couldn't reach any direct family members and that the end was imminent. I went down there myself and sat with her for the next three days it took her to die, all the time talking to her kids and begging them to come see her. No one came, no one bothered to take the time out of their busy lives, and no one was there but me when she breathed her last. We didn't even like each other, but damned if I was going to let her die alone, and actually I'm glad I had that time with her. We made our peace and I consider myself blessed to have been able to ease her passing and make her smile. To ignore the needs of your own parent or relative is to me a guaranteed ticket to hell.

I love your story Sparks...It sounds a little like mine. My in laws were hard people to love and because of monetary and legal issue too complicated for this discussion, I couldn't get along with them. My father in law especially thought I was the anti Christ...Anyway when they got older I would help them as much as I could because my husband was so busy with the farm. He also didn't get on with them but I made him see them and talk to them because I knew a time would come when he would be glad he had done that.
So I was with them when they died. In fact, my husband, and my two kids were there when they passed and I have never been sorry I was the caretaker even though I think they weren't too fond of me. I did get to the point of being more comfortable and I must say that we did enjoy some great memories of the past with them and our kids...

I can so identify with you on this horn. My mother in law thought I was the Anti-Christ too! LOL I kept a diary of her last days while I was there and when I read it later, even I was moved to tears at the progression of adversaries to friends. My brother-in-law had the diary buried with her and I was so honored and pleased by that. Weird maybe - but my mother-in-law would have understood and been pleased too.

You know, I have thought of myself in the situation of caring for my parents many times. See, I was abused as a child, I still bear scars from the beatings I endured. That was my mother and stepfather. My father never hit me, he just ignored my existance, even after being told what I was being put through. One day, it may come to pass that I will need to care for the very people who made my childhood torture. And you know what? They will receive the very best care I can give them. They will be well cared for. Why? Because they are my parents. Thats just all there is to it, I will care for them, because I am stronger, and a better person, than either of them. Anyone who can leave their own flesh and blood to suffer alone isn't worth being called a human.
