Baby born at 23 weeks, weighed only 1 pound and survives |
|
This story amazed me. The baby, a little girl, was born at 23 weeks, and weighed only 1 pound. The mom, who has 4 other children, was told the baby only had 10 percent chance of surviving. The little girl is now 9 months old, and weighs 14 pounds, and was just released from the hospital. She has CP, and needs to be suctioned at times, eats through a feeding tube, and wears oxygen, but continues to develop and hopefully will be free of these things someday. It is amazing what technology can do these days. I sometimes wonder though, if these people have insurance or none. I wonder did they have stupundous insurance, state insurance or none. What would the outcome have been for the different options. I often wonder these things.

Yes, babies born after 24 weeks have a chance of survival if they are lucky and have excellent medical care. So this little girl was born at 23 weeks, a whole week before the window of opportunity for survival begins. A 10% chance of survival is very slim indeed and so it is wonderful that she stayed alive. I expect that the mother has very good medical insurance otherwise I can imagine that 9 months of medical care would be very expensive. My baby son spent three weeks in a special care baby unit and there were tiny premature babies in that unit. Some of them were the same size as a bag of sugar. At the entrance to the ward there was a notice board with photos and stories of all the successful babies that had got strong there and later gone home. Some of the six month old babies had reached the weight of a large new born baby. Good health to the little baby and all the best to her mother.
