All my life I've feared and detested snakes. As a child I remember my brother Steve had a fascination for them to such a degree that in the heat of summer he would tote a one-gallon bottle with him as he explored the neighborhood in search of snakes to add to his ever-growing collection.

In our small town lived a mentally challenged girl about two years older than my brother. Everyone picked on her and made fun of her, and since she came from a dysfunctional family there was nobody to take her side and intervene.

One day "Althea" approached my brother, who with gallon bottle in hand, removed a small, harmless garter snake and dropped it down the back of Althea's dress. She ran in sheer terror as the snake fell through her dress onto the ground. Casually Steve picked it up and returned it to its home.

I was horrified at what I'd just seen and instead of simply accommodating Steve's fascination with snakes, began to despise them.

Four years ago I moved to Southwest Florida. The area is rife with snakes of many varieties. One snake that is "welcomed" by homeowners (though not IN their homes) is the black snake which eats insects and small rodents as well as other snakes.

Fast-forward to July 4, 2005: It was a hot and humid day and I was about to go into the pool for a swim. Joining me was a friend who had open-heart surgery a year earlier. I walked down the steps and approached a plastic float near the middle of the pool. At that point my eye caught a movement in the skimmer. A closer look revealed that it was a snake! As calmly as possible I told my friend to leave the pool.

I reacted quickly, exiting the pool, and ran into the garage for the net I used to remove debris from the pool I also grabbed a heavy monkey wrench.

After opening the skimmer flap the snake, which had been bobbing up and down in the skimmer, was able to get out into the pool proper. After countless failed attempts I was finally able to scoop it up with the net and slammed it down on the pool deck. As it lay there, helpless and covered with the net, I took the monkey wrench and hit it on the head several times (all the time mentally praying).

Then I scooped up the dead snake with the net and tossed it into a vacant lot next to my house. I returned inside, got my digital camera and took several pictures of the reptile. A bit later I researched it on the Internet. It turned out to be a pygmy rattlesnake! The pygmy rattler, it's thought, does not have a bite that is necessarily fatal, but it can cause a serious necrosis, a localized death of the tissue surrounding the bite.

That rattler was my first encounter with a snake since my childhood, and my childhood fear and loathing of snakes was renewed with a new passion. Later that day I couldn't help but wonder where my temporary act of bravado came from.

So how do you feel about snakes? Have any slithering around your house? Any wrapped around your neck at this moment?

Memo to self: As helpful to the environment as they might be, I still fear and despise snakes, venomous or not! (C) 2008 RJScott

I also don't like snakes, but most of all I fear them, and I don't think I would have killed the snake in that pool, given the chance I would have put as much distance as possible between that snake and me regardless of what type it was.

Thanks for the response, DuranV. I was HOPING that someone would respond so I could admit to the fact that I typoed on "Loathing," not once, but TWICE. I feel like a perfect a$$!

As for putting as much distance between me and that snake, if I had not killed it, I would have not been able to go into the pool for the rest of 2005, all of 2006 and 2007 as well as up to to the present, in 2008. It would still be there.

Being trapped in the skimmer, it had no way of escaping. And once I got it into the pool proper there was no escape there either. It was too small to get out regardless of how it might have tried. It was only about 15" long ... still venomous.

Eeww chilling stories. I hate snakes, as well. To me the only good snake is a dead snake, not original, but it's how I feel. I am still trying to figure out how to show my small son about snakes without transferring my fear to him. I want him to be wisely fearful of venomous snakes but to be aware of the good performed by non-venomous snakes . Hmmm...how to do that when I am terrified of any snake and scream like a sissy girl when I see them. LOL! I know about how to tell them apart....blah blah blah, but it still doesn't make them anymore attractive to me.

LOL, maybe it's the whole Garden of Eden thing? LOL! Snake=bad!;)

Thank God my brothers never played with them, that I know of. My mom said that, when my dad was little, he used to bring grass snakes to school and put them down girls dresses.

I don't think I would have killed the snake. I would have got my friend out and then we would both have had a day away from my house until someone could come and kill it for me. But then.....what it if it was no longer there and I would be wondering WHERE the heck it WAS? Hmm....you did the right thing obviously. Your logic prevailed over panic. I could only hope that I would have the courage.{{shudder}}

And therein lies the problem. If I'd left the snake where it was, I'd be checking under my bed every night until I found a snake corpse.

Panic? Hell, I INVENTED the word when it comes to snakes. I hate them with a passion.

Sounds like your dad was a lot like my brother ... UGH!

And, Irish, it wasn't courage, believe me. I just did NOT intend to entertain uninvited guests at my swim party. And, I did NOT!

Hey RJ,

I loathe and fewar snakes as much as you do, and I really don't care what kind they are and I wouldn't be even trying to get it with a pool net or anything else, I'd be screaming all the way to the house and putting as much distance between myself and my newly found 'pet', and it would stay that way.

I know snakes are good for things like eating small rodents ie mice and chimpmunks and things that aren't good for your home but I'd rather have the chimpmunks than the snakes around.

I admire your bravado, I won't go near a snake with a 10 foot pole.

Mooch, believe me when I tell you: There was not ONE OUNCE of bravado in what I did.

The hairs on the back of my neck, under my arms, those left on my head, and those that had not yet emerged from my shaven face were ALL standing at attention!

FN! You found me!

That particular snake and I are rather friendly, as you well know.

I always wondered where your fear of snakes came from. You've mentioned it a few times. I think that I would have been very angry with my brother for doing that to that poor girl, as opposed to being mad at the snakes - but, brothers are brothers, so it makes a certain kind of sense, actually. Much easier to be mad at the snakes.

You protected your weakened friend, rj, in the pool that day - that's where your 'bravado' came from. That's an honorable thing to have done. But how could you stand to kill it? I know you're a pacifist, so you must have really felt some serious hate for that snake to have been able to bring yourself to kill it. But a pygmy rattler! Wow, you were braver than you knew! Fine, it won't cause death, but severe pain and necrosis of the skin is pretty daunting.

I don't particularly fear snakes, although I sure wouldn't want to run into one in my house, or anywhere else, for that matter, except in a controlled environment, like a zoo, even a petting zoo would do. I've touched snakes in petting zoos and at reptilariums and they're soft and not at all like what you'd expect.

I think that I'd have to look at snakes sort of how I look at bees, who I'm allergic to. If I leave them alone, they'll probably leave me alone, and if I don't flail at them, they're not gonna sting me, unless of course I sit on one, or something like that. I think the only things of nature I really 'hate' are cockroaches and moths. The general bug category is NOT my favorite. Eeew, and water bugs, those big black ones, that come out in the summer, they used to be all over the sidewalks when I was a kid. But, as usual, there I go again, off topic...

Nova,

I think my fear of snakes probably has two origins: Althea, the girl whose dress my brother dropped the snake down ... the poor girl was PETRIFIED ... her fear probably was transferred to me in an instant. I was probably no more than 9 years old. And the way they "slither" makes them all the more ugly in my eyes.

I don't think I killed the rattler out of hate as much as out of fear ... and the fact that it invaded MY space.

So you're allergic to bees? Me too. The last sting was some years ago, and the reaction gets worse with each sting. The last one mushroomed into the size of an orange.

I'm grateful that I have a cage over my pool. I'd hate a swarm of "killer bees" to discover me and decide to attack! I heard on one of the nature channels recently that you can't simply duck under water if they strike. They just wait for you to emerge and attack again, and again and again!

myLot reputation of 92/100. novataylor (1565)   ranked 631 out of 24,741 in life  3 months ago

Yes, bees can get really angry and be very vindictive - I don't know how, but I know they can. The last time I was stung was in 1981. I was stung when I set my arm down on the fire-escape railing, right onto a bee of some sort, and within no more than 4 seconds, my forearm looked like Popeye's, seriously. BUt I really try to be calm when I'm out in my garden, because there are lots of bees out there, and if I get freaky about it, they'll come and get me, I just know they will. So, I adopt a very sternly held live-and-let-live policy with them. So far, so good. But, you're right, each sting brings a more severe reaction, so please be careful when you're out there, darlin. I'd like to keep you around a bit longer, ok?

And what you say about why you got so scared of the snakes makes so much sense too. Nine years old is pretty young to witness something so frightening and not be deeply affected by it. I can't even imagine.
