Grow Flowers you can EAT.. |
|
Like Vegetables many FLOWERS can be eaten as well. You can add much colour to the green salad by useing the petals of some flowers. In deserts petals can be used, like those of the ROSE or small VIOLET. There are many edible flowers. The edible flowers can be dipped into hot water, then dipped into sugar syrup ans dusted with icing sugar (granulated). Dandelions, too, the buds can be cooked with leeks, then served with butter sauce. Roses are good for Jelly, shredded into an omelet Hera are some Flowers that are safe and are edible. Lilac, Dandelions, Carnations, Marigold, Nasturtiums, Roses, Pansy, Clover, Honeysuckle, Mint, there are many more that can be use, but care is needed, what I have included are safe to eat. Have you any RECIPES where FLOWERS are used as an Ingredient.

3. drannhh (4432) | 3 months ago | I love edible flowers, but like to nibble them right off the plant, rather than going to the trouble of cooking them up in a recipe. Nasturtiums are one of my favorites both for their beauty and for a snack. I have only grown the big orange ones, but here is a page that shows tiny pink and yellow ones: http://edibletulip.typepa...

7. DonnaLawson (1507) | 3 months ago | I am not sure if I would feel comfortable eating flowers.. I have went my entire life knowing that you don't eat them.. And now, out of the blue, all of the cooking shows on TV are showing how you can eat them... I have seen some really cute cakes, cupcakes and other desserts decorated with flowers, but I am still not comfortable eating them.. Besides I can't keep them growing fast enough in my flower beds, the rabbits want them, the bugs want them and now I have to take a fly swat after my family to keep them out of them.. I will just keep this tidbit to myself and not tell them, it may cause more trouble than it is worth..

GreenMoo (1731) | 3 months ago | Hey Donna, you shouldn't feel uncomfortable with eating flowers. I bet you've been doing it for ages but never really thought about it. After all, broccoli and cauliflower are both the flower part of their plant:-) I can't say I go for eating many flowers though. they don't have much substance really.

DonnaLawson (1507) | 3 months ago | Well, I think that I was classifying broccoli and cauliflower as veggeis, I had more the smaller flower petals in mind.. I do know that a couple of rose bushes wouldn't fill me up, lol.. Have a great day

8. GreenMoo (1731) | 3 months ago | Thankyou for that list Hiccup. I shall look these all up & see what I can do with them. I have a large veggie garden but don't normally grow flowers as I can't eat them .... but, yes, I can! I grow nasturtiums to eat. The leaves make a great spicy addition to salads, or if you cook them lightly they lose their spicyness and work as a great spinach substitute. The flowers and seeds are edible too. I like the dandelion bud and leek idea. I'll try that. I don't like the leaves much, but I'll try anything once! Isn't it marigold that is known as the poor man's saffron? Add it to rice to give a lovely yellow shade. I've heard of sprinkling the petals in salad too, though I like looking at the flowers too much than to have tried it. I think my favourite flower to cook with is elderflowers. My family love the elderflower cordial I make each year, and this year we'll be foing elderflower champagne as well. And of course elderflower fritters are a tasty treat too. It's elderflower season coming up soon, and I've just bought myself a fresh bucket:-)

hiccup (3672) | 3 months ago | Rose petals are nice in ice cream also sugar dusted rose petals are nice as well. Zuccini stuffed with minced meat seasoned and baked or pan fried works well.
