 which one plays the everyday female romantic lead better? I loved meg ryan in those 90s romantic comedies with billy crystal and tom hanks. rene though really shines on the screen. to me she is much more believably as an every day girl. which one do you think is a better actor?

I have to confess that I'm biased against Meg Ryan and towards Renee Zellweger, because I hated every one of Meg Ryan's films I've ever seen and loved every one of Renee Zellweger's.
There's something about Meg Ryan's on-screen persona that comes across to me as just so fake and prefabricated, that I can't tolerate it.
Renee Zellwegger, on the other hand, and as you say, comes across as a much more believable character. To be blunt, she's simply a better, more versatile and way more talented actress than Meg Ryan.
I absolutely LOVED Nurse Betty, and Cold Mountain, and Brigette Jones' Diary (and trust me on this, I'm not at all romance-oriented). What's more, I HATE Hugh whatsisname who was in the Brigette Jones films, but Zellwegger more than made up for his sleazy presence.
As for Meg Ryan - I reckon she killed whatever credibility she might have had as an actress by turning up again and again in the same tired old romance-themed movies with Tom Hanks and similar. Over and over and over. Please, I'd rather just fall asleep in a rail carriage somewhere than have to put up with THAT tedious nonsense.
Renee Zellwegger, though, has a powerful screen presence. And she's damn hot to boot!

I think Ryan and Hanks did a lot of the movies together, because they had great chemistry together...I was not a fan of "When Harry met Sally" ( and I know that was Crystal and not Hanks). The only movie that Hanks and Ryan did together that I COULD NOT stand was "You've Got Mail." But then again I thought the plot was stupid and boring....or a little to much for the big screen....
But I see your point about how diverse Zellweger is as an actor.
But then again the two are from different generations....what are your feelings on Reese Witherspoon and Renee Zellweger?

To be honest, I'm not very familiar with Reese Witherspoon's work. I believe she's had a raft of film successes, like Legally Blonde & etc, but I'm just not too opinionated about her because I really haven't watched her movies. If I saw her in a film right now, I probably wouldn't recognize her (except for the film credits).
She's probably more along the lines of the standard Hollywood mold than Renee Zellwegger. But I still like Zellwegger more than Reese Witherspoon (even if I don't know who Reese Witherspoon really is). | |

It is not easy to portray southern women without looking entirely tacky, and you should watch "Sweet Home Alabama" if you haven't already seen it. | |

There are many actresses out there who can depict everyday kind of women. And it just goes to show how talented they are.....
But my choice has always been Meg Ryan.... | |
