Canon Rebel Xti's are decent DSLRs but for what I wanted in a camera I steered away from them,

I went for a NIKON D300 (new top of line Nikon) but I have also heard really good reviews about a D40 which can be had for under 600 with a lens

What do you want the camera for, and how serious do you plan to become about photography.

I personally if you want a intro DSLR I would go with a Nikon D40, I haven't hear good reviews on, I personally went with Nikon over Canon, the Canon Rebel was still having some issues with night and low light shots, however I'm not sure if the Xti fixed those..reading reviews from people I have to say the Nikon D40 is the best you can get, and I'm seeing complete packages on Ebay for under 500.00 which includes lens, tripod, case and everything you need...but what you really need to consider is what you prefer, read the reviews and take it from yourself, I went with a Nikon D300 brand new top of the line which was beating Canon in almost all areas of performance, there was I think one area that had a slight edge on the Nikon....but that was it.

Whatever you go with this is the one piece of advice I have for you,

Buy the most you can afford, I went with a Point and Shoot and within 6 months I wished I had a DSLR, and remember you can buy a low end DSLR and then upgrade the body later and use the lenses on the better camera.

I think 40D now is more worth to buy.Because it is more solid with a metal frame. The most important is that,40D can match more lens!
