How Much Time Would You Spend on MyLot if It Cost $6.95 Hr? email this discussion to a friend?

I don't know how many of you, if any, remember back when the average cost to be online was $6.95 per hour. But that's the way it was back in the '80s and well into the '90s.

Back in 1996 MSN offered a service for $6.95 per month that included 5 hours online time with each additional hour (over 5) at $2.50 per hour.

In 1998, AOL offered a plan that was $4.95 a month for three hours online time, with additional hours billed at the rate of $2.50 per hour.

Years before that it was even costlier. Before cable modem and "high speed" dial-up, back in the mid-'80s the connections were made via a 300-bps modem which was excruciatingly slow followed not too long after by a 1,200 baud modem that showed a decided difference in speed. Imagine the time it would take to initiate a discussion at those "speeds."

It was nothing to amass monthly bills in excess of $300, $400, $500. and more. Only 20 hours a week amounted to a bill of almost $600.00 a month. And there were people who were online in "chat" rooms CONSTANTLY, day and night.

Fortunately for me, I was working for online services and never had to pay a bill. My connection time was a perk of the jobs.

I became aware of people who lost their jobs and their homes and families split up due to "Internet Addiction." These were people who had inexpensive computers, but just couldn’t get enough of the chat rooms.

Today, with a reasonable dial-up connection speed (and at 56K modem doesn't necessarily mean you CONNECT at 56K ... more likely about 33K), how many hours do you think you'd spend trying to make a penny a post if you had to pay $6.95 per hour just to connect to the Internet?

If internet was still that costly there is NO way I would ever be online at all. Since it is not that expensive any more but it can still be pricy depending on your internet connection. I have cable internet and we are spending close to $60 a month for the hi-speed cable internet with wireless adaptor because we have 2 computers running and there are times that, that is hard to pay. The thing is with all the ways to earn money online today they make it easier to make neds meet in this competitive world we have.

Back in the day when I had to pay for minute that I was on the internet, I did not spend long on it at all, I spent about 1 hour a day maximum, so therefore I would have spent maybe 15 minutes or so on mylot if I knew about mylot back then if that. I probably wouldn't have bothered to be fair.

Yeah, I remember in 1994 connecting to the internet and there weren't any pictures. I remember it costing a LOT. I was just a little girl then, too.

Then we got internet again in 1997. I remember it was dial-up at a flat-billed rate of $14.99 a month. I got my main email address from Hotmail then and I still use that address!

Then from that dial-up service we got Netzero for $9.95 a month (which they still offer for some reason)

Now we have broadband and they couldn't pay me $9.99 a month to use dial-up.

I have Comcast which I hate, but we're moving to an area that has a choice between comcast and someone else and we're taking the someone else because they are cheaper and experience less down time.

Hi,
If internet is still $6.95 per hour, I will not be online at all because it is too expensive. Personally, I'm trying to make money using the internet, if the internet fee is $6.95 per hour, I don't think I will be able to make more than $6.95 per hours. So, I think I will not use the internet at all unless I wanted to find information.

I did not get online at home until the mid-90s. I graduated high school in 1996. I know my friends at college would stay up extra late staying online. It was free there. My parents got aol with super slow dial up right as I was graduating. They had a per-minute plan at first I think.
If internet prices were that high again there is no way I could be online as often as I am now. I would most likely stick to checking my email a couple times a day and that is it.

ouch..um...my parents would have been like..."internet...what is this internet that you speak of...we've never heard of the internet at 6.95 per hour that you speak of" yeah...that would have been a fail. thank god for places that give them plan packages for the net now. so the answer is no...i would not be on the net for any reason were it to cost that much

rotflmbo, I actually had no idea that the internet was available in the 80's. No I am not fooling around, I didn't know. LOL! I didn't really know anything about it until it was a one time monthly fee charge. We had dial-up until just a few months ago. If it still cost per hour then internet would not even be an option in my home. I wouldn't even ask to have it. LOL! My husband insisted that I get DSL, since we are out in the country and he knows how much I like to 'visit' via internet and email. I was still hesitant, but finally gave in to his prodding. LOL! I am a tightwad extrodinaire, or pretty close to it.;)

I don't know how I survived, but if you had unlimited calling it was a lot cheaper to handle at that time, I remember that from the time I joined AOL I always had unlimited service however, I was never more glad to ditch them than anything else I ever used.

If we had to pay by the hour we'd be in trouble because we still have to have the connection for my husband to work, however I have to say that if that were the case it would be cheaper to drive to work and pay for the gas thena to telecommute.

I don't even wanna think about online bills like that

If the internet cost me $7 an hour, I wouldn't be spending any time here at all. The amount of money I would make on Mylot wouldn't even pay for my hours of time I've spent online. I'm glad they don't charge by the hour anymore or else I'd be pretty screwed.

That was then and now it's now. I know very well the "technology" we had back then (I remember the big worldwide fuss made when Toshiba announced it came on the market with a Computer equipped with 40 MB hard drive). As for the dial-up connection well...modernize Yourself. I am in a 2nd world country, equipped with a high speed home connection paying 10$/month, unlimited traffic, and if that can be done in a country that's considered to be one of the most expensive in the world (reguarding telecommunications), it can be done in the US too....

I don't recall having mentioned in the original discussion that I was not "modernized."

The U.S. already does have access to the Internet available for under $10.00 a month. Nothing in my discussion indicated that it does not.

The topic of my discussion was simply comparing the Internet today to the way it was 20+ years ago.
