An Afternoon At The Beach. |
|
My partner and I decided to head to the beach this afternoon. It was the hottest day of the year in Vancouver at a hot 29 degrees C (84 F).
Now, I don't get to go to the beach very often, because my partner does not like the beach, and normally will go to great lengths to avoid going there. Today he owed me one I had forgotten exactly why I enjoy going to the beach so much. This afternoon brought it all back to me.
The beach in the area that we go to is called Kitsilano. Sitting on the beach, looking to the right, you have the high rises of downtown Vancouver, with the North Shore Mountains as a backdrop. Sitting in the hot sun and looking at the snow still coating the Mountain tops is a surreal experience to say the least!
Although the beach was absolutely packed, and kids were squealing at every opportunity, it afforded both myself and my partner to lay in the sun and just relax. Things have been tough recently, with work stresses and so on. Letting our worries and cares melt away was just wonderful.
As is usually the case with me though, I made a bit of a boo-boo. We bought sunblock with a protection factor of 50+. I'm fair skinned. Anything lower than 50+ and I burn. I put the sunblock in my bag prior to us heading out. By the time we got to the beach, I'd forgotten it was in my bag, so didn't apply any.
I'm now resembling a lobster after being exposed to 29 degree sun for 3 hours with no protection! And I hurt.

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 2 years ago | Thanks Ellie, the beach is just a wonderful place. I'm lucky in that we can go hiking in the mountains in the morning and then visit the beach in the afternoon if we want to. Having both is such close proximity is a great thing!
I've been applying after sun lotion religiously since last evening and the soreness is going already so it's not too bad. I'll definitely remember the sunblock next time hehe.
I agree with you about the lapping of the waves too. It's a wonderful way to discharge any stress or worries. I should get a CD with ocean sounds on it and listen to it when I feel stressed.

2. Transdisc (18489) | 2 years ago | It sounds like you had a good, relaxing time at the beach with your partner, angelwhispers30. I wish I could spend such time on the beach with my partner, and I hope that we'll remember to bring adequate protection from the sun.
I'm so sorry to hear that you were burned. Fortunately, I have never had that problem. Are you still hurting?

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 2 years ago | Hi Transdisc.
We had a wonderful time! It was good to leave our cares and worries behind for a while.
I'm not hurting quite as much as I was. I've ben applying liberal amounts of after-sun lotion, and so it has soothed it somewhat.
We went for a walk on Sunday too, and even after making sure I wore sunblock, I still got a little burnt again, and so I'm thinking that it might have been because I was already burnt from the day before.
I'm still red and a touch sore, but it is wearing off finally:)

3. dfn12968 (5538) | 2 years ago | I am like your partner, angelwhispers, I do not like the beach. I lived in Florida for years and rarely went to the beach. It's just not my thing. Although, spending a day relaxing like that with my partner would be great, no matter where it was.
I went to Mexico a few years ago and got sun poisoning. It was over 110 degrees every day, and I was not at all prepared.

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 2 years ago | My partner is very much like you. He also spent a few years in Florida and hated the heat there, so the beach was well and truly out for him.
I've never had sun poisoning before but my mom has and having seen what she went through, I'm always careful to make sure I'm not out for too long. 110 degrees is just INSANE!

4. maddysmommy (10990) | 2 years ago | My husband doesn't like beaches either which is ironic because we lived on an Island two years ago for 6-7 years Lol He hated going to the beach in the weekends. My son and I loved it and still do.
I hope you weren't too sunburnt.

angelwhispers30 (1907) | 2 years ago | My entire family used to like going to the beach, and so when school was out for the summer, we'd take daytrips to various places along the east coast of the UK.
I've never lost my love of the beach, though now I'm more content to lie on the beach that go in the ocean. It's still cold lol!
My partner sat on the beach for three hours looking bored stupid bless his heart lol. I'm just pleased with the fact that he agreed to go in the first place.
