I have use canon for two times. The first one is 2.1M and the second one is 7.1M. So far, I am really satisfied with the result.

They have a lot of easy to use automatic settings, but you can also use fully manual settings if you chose! These entry level DSLRs are also pretty affordable. As for brands, most photographers and camera enthusiasts will suggest either Nikons or Canons. I personally use a Nikon, but I'd recommend both Nikons and Canons.

I would for an amateur or even a beginning professional to go with a DSLR, but the brand is a personal preference.
I chose Nikon based on reviews and personal friend recommendation and I got a package deal off Ebay for a really good deal, 2 lenses camera, flash, memory card, card reader, lower pro backpack carrying case, you name it everything I need to start and paid just under 2200, but you can get cameras for a lot less, it depends on your budget.
What do you want to use it for, and what's your budget, do you have a camera preference, I recommend Nikon or Canon, although Sony is starting to make a name for themselves with DSLR, although my personal choice was Nikon.
You can get a D40 off ebay complete starter package for under 600....
Buy the best you can afford....
